El Delta del Orinoco New!! in EN

Pensamos que habíamos navegado suficiente en los últimos días, pero cuando fuimos conscientes de la biodiversidad del delta del Orinoco, no dudamos en buscar una oportunidad para ver pájaros y disfrutar un poco de la tranquilidad de la naturaleza.

We thought we had done enough wandering in the last few days, however when we learned of the biodiversity of the Orinoco delta, we realised that we had to seek an opportunity to see birds and enjoy the tranquillity of the natural setting.

LLegamos a Maturín, lavamos nuestras ropas en la tina y salimos al día siguiente hacia San José de Buja un pequeño puerto en el Delta, en donde encontramos a Victor.

We arrived in Maturín, washed clothes in the bathtub and set out the following morning for San José de Buja, a tiny village and access port for the delta, where we met Victor.

En menos de 10 minutos estábamos dentro de una curiara y en otro mundo: agua café, árboles a lado y lado, otras embarcaciones pasando en ambas direcciones y otra fisionomía en las personas, los Warao.

In less than 10 minutes we were in a curiara (small river craft) and in another world: brown water, trees on both banks, small craft passing by, and a different physionomy in the people, the Warao.

Luego de 30 minutos observamos un muelle y ese era el hotel: Orinoco Eco Lodge, un lugar perfectamente integrado con el entorno, se llega a un gran muelle con el comedor, sala, bar, hamacas y cocina, luego diversas pasarelas conectan esta estructura con las habitaciones, que no son más que plataformas sobre palafitos, con techos de paja, una cama con mosquiteros, una canasta colgante y dos troncos de madera para sentarse; adicionalmente una estructura central con la zona de baños. Lo demás la selva, con su humedad, sus cantos, sus inundaciones, sus animales y su exuberancia.

After 30 minutes we saw a small dock, and this was our “hotel”: Orinoco Eco Lodge, a place perfectly integrated into its environment. Its dock extends into a dining area, bar, kitchen, and hammocks; from this area extend wooden catwalks, connecting with the rooms, which are simply platforms on stilts, with palm roofs, a bed with mosquito net, a hanging basket for belongings, and two slices of log for seats. Also connected to the central area is a structure which houses bathrooms and showers. The surroundings are forest, with its humidity, song, inundation of the banks (below the docks and platforms), wildlife, and exuberance.

Fue característico de este viaje estar dentro de una curiara. Al amanecer, durante la mañana, en la tarde y al atardecer estábamos recorriendo el río y sus caños. En las excursiones del amanecer, en el silencio de una curiara a remo y en compañía de Doroteo observamos pájaros y monos hermosos. También al caminar en silencio por las pasarelas del lugar pudimos apreciar muchas especies preciosas.

It was characteristic of this part of our trip to be in a boat. At dawn, in the morning, in the afternoon, and at sunset, we were out in the delta. At dawn, in the silence of a dugout canoe, in the company of Doroteo, seeing birds and monkeys in the trees. Also at this time, walking the catwalks we could see many fascinating species.

Completamos la perspectiva en los paseos de grupo con James, que además de guiarnos por diferentes escenarios y darnos espacios para contemplar el atardecer en un lugar diferente cada vez, nos permitió conocer algunos de los secretos de la selva: agua (de fruto de palma y bejuco), comida (Termitas y Gusano), suelo y seguridad.

The other expeditions were in groups led by James, who, in addition to guiding us through different settings and giving us the opportunity to appreciate the sunset in a different place each day, gave us insight into the the secrets of the forest: water (from palm fruit and from the bejuco tree), food (termites and grubs), and how to pass safely across the surface.

Adicionalmente, pudimos visitar una de las viviendas de las familias Warao de la zona, apreciar la forma de sus viviendas, la tradición artesanal de las mujeres y aprender sobre sus habilidades para generar fibras vegetales y tejerlas.

We also visited the home of a Warao family, appreciating their home, the artesania of the women, and how to prepare vegetable fibre for weaving.

Las expediciones en grupo fueron graciosas especialmente por la incapacidad de Simón y su madre para estar en silencio, pero también por las conversaciones ricas con los Suizos y las chicas del País Vasco y sin duda por la capacidad de todos para salir de los trancones que las plantas acuáticas generan cuando el nivel del río baja.

The group expeditions were notable, especially for the inability of Simon and his mother to remain silent, and also for the conversations of the Swedes and the Basque girls, as well as for the talents of all in extricating the boat from the river vegetation when the water level dropped.

Después de tres días de pájaros, ríos, comida local y verde verde y de dos noches de luna llena retornamos al mundo en el que el canto de lo natural dejo de ser fácil de escuchar.

After three days of birds, rivers, local food, and greenery, and two nights of full moon, we returned to the world in which the song of nature ceased to be easy to hear.

Este es un sitio para volver, especialmente para preparar con Antonio un buen plato de gusanos de Moriche, ya que discutimos varias recetas que suenan suculentas.

This is a place to which to return, especially to prepare with Antonio a dish of moriche grubs, for which we have already thought of various succulent recipes.
