Cahuachi

Cahuachi is a ceremonial centre of the Nazca Culture, located in the middle of the desert. The scenery as we made our way there reminded Alan of Botswana.

When we arrived at the site, we were astonished by a pyramid much bigger than our expectations. The pyramid is in restoration and investigation, and so it was not possible to enter the principal area. However we had excellent views of the area from a path with viewpoints, which passed through ruins not yet in restoration.

On this route, and with assistance from our guide, Andrés, we could understand the construction techniques, and the systems used to store food and water.

Air Lines

Alas de Américas, Aeroservicios "Santos", Aerodiana, Nazca Travel, Airlines Nazca Group, AirMajoro, AeroMoche, AirPacaras, Aero Condor Perú, AeroIca, Alas Peruanas pero no Aerolineas Pinguinas: Muchas aerolíneas por las líneas.

...many airlines to choose from to overfly the lines of Nazca (almost as many as you see in Sheremetyevo these days).

We chose Air Majoro, after extensive consultation and deliberation, and based primarily on the fact that they have an office in our hotel... We had harboured some concern regarding safety prior to arriving at the airport, however it appeared that competency was high in the services offered (see photo).

Air Majoro provided a service which was friendly and competent, Luis the copilot shared with us all that we needed to ensure safety, and to enjoy the overflight of the lines.

Herewith, we share some of our photos of the figures on the Nazca Plain (from the Nazca plane), and also a photo of the Cantallo aqueducts.

Hard Rock Nasca

Yesterday we arrived in Nasca from Ayacucho, after 10 hours en route. For the third time in a day´s trip we experienced 3 different ecosystems; the changes in scenery were enchanting.

In the high country one frequently sees camelids, and yesterday was a "camelidfest", with many of these animals, wearing ear adornment. As you can see, these two decided to take interest in the camera allowing us to capture them perfectly.

Una de las abras del día.

One of the day´s high passes.

Tambo Colorado is the site of a key Inca administrative centre on the Pacific Coast, in which are well-preserved ruins of the Central Plaza and a Palace on the north side of the plaza, along with some of the fortified walls and what is thought to be a Sun Temple. The Palace is beautifully constructed and allows appreciation of the complexity of the architecture. A perfect spot to break a long journey.

North of Ica the countryside was less "deserty" than we had expected, with fields of vines, fruit, and vegetables, contrasting with high dunes further west.

From Ica to Nasca the scenery becomes more desert-like (absolutely desert in fact) and once past Palpa, nearing Nasca, the dry rocky mountains conjure scenes from the Arabian Nights.

At the end of the day, we found that the most beautiful scenery lay not in front of us, but behind us, as you can see from this photo taken to share with you.

Ayacucho is a lively city, there are always people out and about enjoying themselves. On both (holi)days we spent in Ayacucho there was live music in the Plaza in the evenings, and the stores were open all day.

Thanks to Manuel of Avant Services, a photographic business, we were able to find some photos of Ayacucho in the early 20th century; we looked at the negatives, selected a variety, with discussion of each, and printed them for our files. With much generosity, Manuel also gave us electronic copies of a number of his other photos.

During our morning walk a generous ayacuchano who saw us taking photos in the Plaza de Armas gave us tickets for the Ballet Folclorico Huamanga Señorial, which was held in the Cultural Centre San Cristobal, a colonial casona near the Plaza. This turned out to be an excellent performance, with live music support, of different dances from various parts of Peru, which was very enjoyable.

We spent yesterday evening and much of today walking around the city, which retains much of the colonial architecture of its past. The Plaza is large and green, and the city centre has a variety of churches.

Ayachucho is known as a centre for textiles, ceramics, leatherwork and "retablos". We came across some fine examples of weaving, and noted that many houses have ceramic ???? topping their roofs. The Ayacuchanos feel very proud of their community and all of its manifestations; it was a pleasure to visit.

We left Huancavélica on a cold morning: 7 degrees C and a strong wind. Ten minutes later we were climbing an unsurfaced road into very different scenery - Puna. Wide horizons, few vehicles passing, frequently people taking their animals to graze, predominantly large groups of camelids.

We encountered this couple many times in the high country; they were stopping frequently to enjoy the scenery and became a useful guide to the best viewpoints. At each stop they would divest themselves of crash-helmet, sombrero, backpack, and "ruana" to take photos. These viewpoints overlooked the complex of lakes between 4300m and 4600m MSL, where we enjoyed the beautiful scenery and the diverse birdlife. We also enjoyed lunch in Santa Ines, at a key crossroads, and at 4685m MSL; this being the biggest town on the route, and no more than 100 inhabitants.

Once we connected with the tarmac highway of "Los Libertadores", we started our second major ascent, to 4700m MSL, where we reached scenery rich in mineral colours, and rocky formations which had clearly served as inspiration for Tolkien.

After the final Police checkpoint for a "touristic inspection" (we are hardly ever asked for papers, they are always more interested in explaining the touristic priorities of the region: conversations which are always friendly and helpful), Ayacucho came into view and soon we were ready to go for a walk in the town.

Before leaving Huancayo we decided to visit Huari, a small village which is now more or less part of Huancayo. Everywhere there were communities celebrating "El Santiago", dancing in happy groups each with a small group of musicians.

The women wear skirts bordered with hand-embroidered edging of flowers and sombreros with a round crown and bands of the same colour. The men wear black trousers, white shirts, and black sombreros as can be seen in the photo.

The route to Huancavelica is congested, but not with vehicles; there were frequent encounters with large groups of cows, sheep, camelids, and donkeys, as can be seen, using the entire roadway, and herded by women who were also carrying their children and spinning...

The scenery was initially rich with yellow and ochre tones, and then evolved into a series of ever-changing ridges and valleys, each revealing new canyons and crests.

Near Huancavelica, at the crest of the last pass, of over 4000 m MSL, we encountered a ¨stone forest¨which is known as a ceremonial site used by various pre-hispanic cultures, which served us well as a lunch spot.

Once in Huancavelica, where we found a wholesale replacement of traditional street cobbles (!) we made a reconnaissance of the town and came across this "parade" of statues representing the dances of the region, which are important in the local identity.

The journey from Lima to Huancayo can be divided into two: BC and AC (before Chosica and after Chosica).

We started with the period BC: we left on Sunday morning, which seemed to offer the prospect of smoother traffic in Lima, and with the help of the stupendous map prepared by Luis Palma, we arrived rapidly at the exit from Lima, the Carretera Central. For a minute all seemed to be going well, however we soon found ourselves embroiled in the chaotic traffic depicted in the photo, with every imaginable inconvenience, for another 2-1/2 hours before leaving "greater Lima".

After leaving Chosica, everything changed, including the scenery which changed constantly. We found ourselves in a vertiginous ascent; when we wondered what height we had climbed to (from sea level) the GPS told us that we were at over 4000m MSL, and still climbing. Once we reached the rocky summit depicted, we found ourselves at 4810 m MSL, surrounded by llamas, lakes, and snow.

During our gradual descent from the pass, we came across many communities celebrating and dancing "El Santiago", as you can see from the photo, this is a celebration involving the whole community...

Once we arrived in Huancayo, we encountered the Casa del Artesano, and to our great pleasure, Delia Poma, whom we had met in Bogotá. She is a Master of Masters in the art of engraving the "mate". We had a wonderful conversation with her, at her stand in the Casa, her calm smile being rich for the spirit. (Talking of Delia requires conversation, since the written word doesn't do justice to the beauty of this person). Look at the delicacy of her work, which in this example, shows scenes of farm work. This "mate¨ is only 3cm high.

Sabores de Lima / Flavours of Lima

The flavours of Lima were four: archaeology, colonial history, food, and company.

We enjoyed visiting Huaca Pucllana, a multi-level, pre-inca structure, built initially by the Lima people. Its construction from small adobe bricks, placed largely vertically, and its size were surprising.

Also, in the Museo Larco, we were able to appreciate an extensive collection of ceramics, textiles, and artifacts of gold and silver from the different Peruvian cultures. The restaurants at both of these sites are imperatives in any visit.

In our obligatory visit to central Lima, we discovered the Casa de la Literatura Peruana, which is dedicated to the history and currents of Peruvian literature, allowing us to gain insight into the writers most representative of each. The Casa has a reading room to allow visitors to read during their visit.

After obtaining our readers´ cards at the National Library of Peru, we were able to track down the letters of the "Solitario de Sayán" a Trujillo thinker of the revolutionary era, whose criticisms of the monarchy were powerful. We also gained access to the photographic archive (maintained in a somewhat traditional fashion - the cardex files give a sense of being in a library in the 1950s). We were able to locate various photos of value to the colonial investigation, which are now in digitisation for us.

An additional pleasure in Lima was the opportunity to meet Stan, with whom we enjoyed two excellent dinners, and various circuits through the "malecons" of the coast.

Largo día en el desierto

Today was a long day in the desert (¡). Leaving the hotel in Trujillo at 0740h and arriving in the hotel in Lima at 1915h. The actual travel time, including a lunch stop, was about 8-1/2 hours. The rest of the time was spent negotiating the traffic at start and finish.

The route runs more or less parallel to the coast, coming close to it from time to time. The route is very dry, with frequent zones where sand dunes accumulate, and where sand is blowing across the road. Although challenging in terms of the constant wind and the distance, the traffic was not heavy, being mainly trucks and buses. Some of the latter operate on the basis that traffic in the other direction will give way if necessary, so present an additional risk on the route.

Many of the villages on the way sadly show very basic housing, as you can see.

The greenest part of the trip is shortly before arriving at the Lima conurbation: as you can see this level of green remains elusive.
