New!!! What we did on Roraima /Nuestro reporte de Roraima

Primera parada comercial y luego a nuestro destino.

At 1000h we got going, everyone to the cars. The group of 16 people, 11 tourists, 1 guide, 1 assistent guide, and 4 porters, took places in each car with the container courtesy of people most of whom don’t know each other, and who will be living together for the next 6 days. Roger, the leader and guide, gave starting orders and we we were under way. First stop for shopping (key supplies) and then towards our destination.

A few metres before San Francisco de Yaruani we left the main road and took an unsurfaced road to Paraitepuy, an indigenous community where the official entrance to Mount Roraima can be found. A few kilometres from the turn off the first surprise of the journey: an araguato crossing the road and ascending into a moriche, when the vehicle stopped it took off running into the savanna, seeking to distance itself from us; camera in hand we left the vehicle running, with three of the support team,Vicente, José Cristóbal and Gabriel, running off in different directions to corral the araguato. Juan Pablo, the driver, said “hop in” and we set off into the savanna by a track and soon were facing the araguato, where the three had cornered it. It was wonderful to photograph, and also then to let it run free.

We arrived at Paraintepuy and Roger (the Guide) gave us our instructions: each one with his/her kit, everyone with his/her sleeping bag and insulation, and when everyone was ready, we ate a sandwich for lunch and then started out.

Leo, the Assistant Guide, led off. At his side both of us seemed comfortable with the pace and the conversation. Leo had done this ascent 110 times in 5 years,; on the horizon we could see the “test climb”. We did enter shock at the sight and continued happily.

When we started this climb the inclination indicated by our proprioceptive systems was much more than had been estimated by our visual systems; maintaining the pace was impossible and our bodies told us “breathe or walk, you can’t do both!”. Since a brief rest was indispensable, everyone passed us and once oxygen levels had increased to the point where we could climb again, we set off. Having reached the top of this section, all seemed OK again, and we continued another three hours. The sun burned and thirst set in; we rank whenever possible, this being the second discovery: drinking the water from the rivers and streams. It had been a long time since it had been possible to drink directly from a river, and doing so was a pleasure.

The open savanna was enriched by the steep tepuys and the woods which filled every depresión. Mount Roraima rose before us, clearly our destination; alongside Kukenan exercised an attractive effect, drawing our gaze frequently.

Before sunset we arrived at our first campsite at the Tek River. The support team had pitched the tents and we could put our kit in the one they had chosen for us: the greenest one, at the centre of them all.

Bathed in sweat and conscious of our need to clean up we headed for the river with the necessities. A small river with a natural pool and very cold water awaited us. We entered the water, washed our clothes, refreshed ourselves, and then got out of the water to be met by the “puri puri” which reminded of the need for insect repellent and long sleeves. This routine accompanied us every day on the walk, however the draw of the water was irresistible after each day’s efforts.

Dry, tired, and hungry we dedicated ourselves to observing the scene until the next call. Roger’s voince called “the food is ready”, and so English was established as the oficial language of the group. When we arrived at the table (constructed of wooden planks and covered by a leaf roof by the local community for the benefit of the groups doing the walk) it was already dark, someone lit a candle, and like a magic trick performed by the “lads” of the support team, spaghetti appeared before us. Everyone ate, each at his/her own level of haste, and with much pleasure.

Then to the tasks of hygiene, and we discovered on the way the city of the fireflies; whose intermittent light appeared on all sides, illuminating the valleys in front of us, and astonishing us with its brilliance. Then we became conscious of the stars, in huge numbers, rarely seen in this richness, reminding us again of the disadvantages of cities.

The night was not the most pleasant, our tired bodies sought rest, however the heat and the hard ground overcame this need, until finally fatigue took over. It seemed only five minutes later that we had to get up.

The day started with a big breakfast, fresh, generous, and tasty. 20 minutes to pack, and then off to the mountain. This second day was another 12 Km of continuous ascent to the base of the mountain wall. Ascending the savanna, ascend being the sole direction and the only verb. The rivers marked rest points, places to fill up with water, which then left through every pore, 30 minutes more and another rest, water, air, and then another stage.

We arrived at the second campsite at the foot of Roraima. Some light refreshment, the water, not cold but icy, and then enjoying the setting. When we finally found a place to sit and start reading our book, it started to rain. The rain continued all afternoon, so everyone occupied the kitchen (an area with palm roof and four posts to support it). A Russian game stimulated interaction, it was impossible read, diversion was shared by all.

The night arrived and with it dinner. The rain then drove us to the tents, and with more fatigue, more rain, softer ground, and dreams set in to the joint accompaniment of Morpheus and Thor, giving us a pleasant night, albeit that others were less fortunate. We found that going out to urinate was not exactly pleasant, the rain being particularly freezing.

With the rising of the sun and the breakfast routine began our third day. The water in the stream exerted excessive attraction for Alan, whose coccyx landed on the rocky bed, resulting in a constant pain marking the subsequent ascent. Around 0700h we started out, having to climb 900m (3000 ft) to the top of the wall, in 2.5 Km, more or less a sheer scramble.

The ascent was marvellous, the trail is narrow and confined by the high mountain vegetation. Lots of humidity, many small flowers, many interesting plants, many different surfaces, which in turn require constant attention, step by step, to avoid falling. The ascent is demanding however very enjoyable, feet and hands working to pass from each step to the next, mud, rocks, roots, clay, loose rock, and sand forming the surface. Finally we arrived at a point where we started to descend to the waterfall, the “way of tears”. The previous day’s rain had increased the flow of water from the tepuy, and every step to this point was refreshed by falling drops of water.

We started to ascend the most rocky and least secure part of the route, the waterfall. One has to pass this way, through a cascade of water, however Leo led us through the best path, patiently giving us time to pass. At this point the group had passed us and we were ascending slowly, enjoying every step, every surprise on the way.

The vegetation changed and black rock dominated the landscape, we continued to climb, and when the sky appeared to lighten we looked up to see Leo seated on a rock above us, we had arrived.

We climbed the last few rocks and exuberance filled the scene: insectivorous plants, rocks eroded by wind and water, quartz crystals, crystalline water pools, red bushes, plants of various shades of green, and a few birds, produce an extraordinary tranquillity. The small black frogs made us happy.

We walked, or rather jumped, from rock to rock for 35 minutes more as far as “Hotel San Francisco”, a cave in which were set up the tents, side by side separated by a foot’s width to allow access behind. In front a group of rocks serves as table and meeting place, and to the right (looking out) the shallowest part of the cave is the kitchen. Water falls from the rocks above, and is used for cooking and drinking; entering and leaving the cave one passes through the curtain of falling water.

We lunched on hot soup and then went to look for water in which to bathe. Six of us went out to explore and found two pools large enough. We were all concerned at the temperature, however the sun had warmed the water, so that although it was hardly warm, it was warmer than the wind and rain. Everyone entered the water, each encouraging the others. Sonia, with her sunny disposition, pulled out a small container of solid canela shampoo and we all enjoyed washing our hair for the first time on the walk. When we got out of the water, the sun appeared, and we all started to dry our clothes while relaxing on the warmest rocks.

At 1500h our first collective exploration of the top of the tepuy. We went to the nearest viewpoint to enjoy the sunset. Another moment to enjoy the beauty of the place and its miniatures. At night the stars dominated the sky, the spectacle surprising, the time taken to view the stars was immensely rewarding.

On the fourth day we set out very early, again we could enjoy the sky, this time at its rosy dawn. We planned to visit the viewpoints on the north wall of the mountain, walking straight to the first in order to arrive early and avoid the arrival of the mist, on the way back we could walk in a more leisurely manner to take photographs, Marce unsure why everyone was looking at her at this point.

We set out, walking without delay, although Marce tended to bring up the rear to take one or two photos, finally arriving at the northwest viewpoint where we could see Kukenan, in all its breadth, its precipitous walls, clouds occupying the base, and the light illuminating the pink rock contrasting with the black, filling the senses with beauty. We enjoyed the highest point, the most extreme, the closest to the tallest precipice, everyone seeking to reach a personal summit with nudity, a special pose, an envelope-pushing move, skin illuminated by the sun, quietly observing the immensity, with a strong embrace, or pushing one’s head over the precipice to describe what lies below, far below, hidden from view.

Later we went to the northeast viewpoint, to see the limit of Roraima in the Guyanese forest. When we arrived the mist did too, and we could see no more than silhouettes in the mist, however the wind rose and with its magic touch cleared the view, revealing the cliffs, allowing us to appreciate the immensity, the rock walls, the clouds below hiding the base of the mountain. We were enjoying the view when the sun’s rays appeared, as surprisingly did Leo and Niño Viejo with breakfast. We were enjoying the setting, an hour from the camp, and these men brought us pancakes, eggs, melon, and tea, to remind us how great is the human heart, and give us a memory for ever.

After delighting our senses we headed to the “Jacuzzis”, an area where pools of water have formed, cold and transparent, which call for occupation. We all enjoyed the cold clean water, washed clothes and relaxed to dry in the sun. We also found that Marce had acquired a “nigua” (sand flea) and extracted this, apparently successfully in terms of rapid recovery. An hour later we set off to the camp, arriving with the onset of rain.

An afternoon of rain ensued, along with games to relax and pass the time. The night fell, rain continued, albeit at lesser intensity, the stars were hidden by the mist, inviting intimacy. We slept better than on previous nights, essential for the descent in the morning.

Day 5 started with the sun hidden behind the clouds, we arrived at a viewpoint above the descent route, and took final photos of the summit plateau. We had to descend to the first night’s campsite, about 15 Km away, while descending 1600m (5300 ft). This was a challenge; ankles, knees, and backs requiring care, and we had to arrive at the base of the wall with sufficient time and energy to handle the second part of the walk.

Step by step we descended the mountain, knowing that this would be difficult. Our minds had hidden the details of the route, so that in each part of the route we discovered new challenges. A mix of tranquillity and pride allowed us to continue, descending gently we were able to see flowers which had been hidden from view on the ascent, and record with more precision the route. When we were nearly at the base of the wall it started to rain, and a section of the descent was revealed which we had apparently expunged from memory: the clay section! With the rain the surface was like soap, and we were not climbing down a path, more of a sheer wall. We were reminded of times when a board was used to “surf” a clay surface; this would have been an interesting toboggan ride…

At the foot of the wall, we ate watermelon, checked our feet, covered blisters, stretched, and once again discovered that it was much better that we had forgotten details of the route. We walked calmly, descending carefully the steeper intervals, and enjoying every step. When we reached the Kukenan River we were jubilant. We arrived at Tek River at 1615h, having walked 9 hours and 15 minutes; we sank into the waters, took care of the daily routine of the river, and then climbed to the camp to meet our companions.

We ate, enjoying every mouthful, everything hurt, however all together we were happy in the enjoyment of having succeeded, conversations, games, and one or other exclamation of pain accompanied the first part of the night, enriched by the beer and wine which had been brought out to celebrate. When our bodies could no longer manage, and our bums no longer endure the hard benches, we went to our tent. Never before had entering been so difficult, and finding a comfortable way to lie on the ground was no easy task, however we overcame these difficulties, fatigue winning out. This night the bladder understood that it had to be more accommodating; getting up in the middle of the night was not an option.

We started out early on Day 6, with lots of stretching to allow us to rise. Once outside the tent we were able to handle the necessary tasks. Breakfast was delicious, we tried cachiri (an indigenous drink based on yucca and potato). With backpack shouldered we set out to Paraitepuy. We walked intensely below the sun, up and down various times, however this time our bodies were well-prepared and responded to the exigencies of the route. Four hours later we were at the control point, showing our backpacks for inspection by the park authorities, and ready to lunch with our group for the last time.

Once again in Santa Elena, it was time to leave, each to his/her own destination. Travelling with this group was an enriching and simple experience, 16 people with stories, interests, ages and intentions different, however in essence 16 marvellous people. Roger clear in his direction of the group, proud of his history and his origins, and knowledgable of his task and his role, filled our days with tranquillity and knowledge. Gabriel, Niño Viejo and José Cristobal, doing their jobs well, efficient and generous, filled our days with wellbeing, and made our enjoyment possible. Leo, our companion, not only led in good taste, but also cared for us in our safety and satisfaction, thanks to the frogs, and to all the places where his hand ensured our safe passage. Paddy and Henry, the English Chaps, who provoked our smiles, all the time relaxed and challenging the limits, while fulfilling their role of recycling any leftover food. Sonia, Ilka, and Barbara, always acting as happy focal points for the interactions between the group, spontaneous and genuine, curious and with judgement, filled moments with lightness, and provoked deeper interactions. Pedro, a diverting and funfilled Venezuelan, leading in music, rhythm, and spontaneity every day. Richard and Rob, whose travel style set an element of tranquillity, who led masculine interactions, and overcame the challenges of poker in the trip. Helio, with his experience as a traveller, and in the journey, filled our days with stories and laughs. It will be a pleasure to remember them, and better to meet them again on the road.

Now in English as well: La gran sabana

Once we had arranged our trip to Mount Roraima, we decided to take a few days to get to know the Gran Sabana.

We left Santa Elena in the morning for Rapidos de Kamoirán. On the way there are many stops/junctions which give access to various waterfalls, with river beds of jasper and beautiful vegetation surrounding them.

All of these sites are run by the indigenous Pemones of the area, who in addition to taking care of the sites themselves, provide support services and manage places to eat and sleep.

On the way various lookout points permit one to appreciate the chain of tepuys in the east and the morichals of the savanna on the other side, where we were constantly seeking to see an anteater passing by.

Before 1700h we arrived at Rapidos de Kamoirán, the first place on the road with gasoline, and a hotel managed by the community. We filled up, and then enjoyed the spectacle of the drivers who arrived at closing time and sought to persuade the police and gas station attendants to sell them gasoline.

As noght fell the only thing it is possible to do is to eat at the restaurant, where following the recommendation of our host in Santa Elena we chose the speciality of the house: Macaroni a la Kamoirán, tasty and perhpas the best on the menu. We went back to our room to enjoy one of the movies acquired in Rorainópolis and to sleep.

The following day started with a refreshing shower with water at "100% natural temperature" (i.e. freezing). Recovered from this, we breakfasted on Venezuelan Arepa with egg, took the route to the airport, and then turned off on a dirt road which reminded us of Bolivian corrugations.

Halfway to Kavanayen we took the turn to Iboribo to visit the Aponwao waterfall. The road was basically sand and as is frequent with this type of road we encountered many forks providing multiple options to cross the sandy plain, often in apparently contradictory directions. A truck served as a reference for a while however turned off for a different destination. Far off we could see a pick up which was approaching, and which took a different route from the truck so we decided to follow it. This proved correct, had we not done this we would no doubt have visited various mud pools on the way to the village.

After the appropriate contacts we left with Pedro in his curiara (canoe) to head downriver to the falls. The river, while wide, flows mainly in a deeper channel; the water is dark, clean, and cold, and the banks are sharply eroded walls. The passage in the curiara was agreeable in terms of the breeze, however the speed limited our enjoyment, there are definitely many things in life which improve with a more relaxed pace.

After a few minutes walk we arrived at the top of the waterfall, the water falling in a torrent, with rainbows below us in the spray, improving the spectacle.

We descended by a well built trail through the forest. Pedro took the time to explain the names and traditional uses of various plants, and soon we were at the base of the 105m waterfall, enveloped in the mist and spray, refreshing our bodies.

Once back in the village we looked for something to eat, however this was possible only when previously ordered, the affluence of the villagers is limited and consequently their disposition also, it appeared. Hence we used some of the alimentation available in the car, and then contionued en route to Kavanayen. The route led progressively towards the tepuy known locally as The Sleeping Indian until this was towering over us, we crossed the Sierra del Tigre, and arrived in the village, whose houses are all built of stone, and set about finding a place to stay.

The village is quiet, tranquil, with the windsong the only sound. Exploring the village we came upon children playing with bows and arrows. On seeing us they subjected us to various attacks and ambushes, to which we responded firing off our cameras. The cameras won, we left the fight victorious, with good friends, after 20 minutes of the game.

We walked until sunset, with many others returning home on the way back, and the progressive establishment of solitude. We ate at Guadalupe's, following many recommendations, where the experience was generous in volume and flavour. At 2000h activity ceased, everyone at home, so we watched the stars, protecting ourselves from the rising wind.

On the way back to Santa Elena we enjoyed the scenery and the tourists of the country, who were engaged in taking photos of their daughters, in modelling poses in front of the eroded rocks at the side of the road... oh well, such is life.

Manaus to Boa Vista; more than a long way / Manaus Boa Vista más que longitud

We left Manaus with the intention of visiting President Figueiredo, a town north of Manaus known for the richness of its ecosystem. Despite the complex layout of Manaus, it was easy to find the way out of the city to the Police checkpoint, until we discovered to our surprise that we were on the wrong highway and had to turn back. As we have found in various places in Brazil, the indication of the turning to BR174 is visible in only one direction, such that now approaching in the “correct” direction it was possible to see the turnoff and take the right road.

Once again a Marcelian day, the rain reminded us that we were in winter, and both of us were privately wondering how the road would be further ahead, the descriptions were not hopeful. We soon found ourselves in the typical scenery of the region, open spaces surrounded by tropical forest, with sandy soil and inundated lagoons, often on both sides of the road at once.

Shortly before our destination we turned off to Balbina to visit the Centre for Conservation and Protection of Aquatic Mammals. On the way we passed turnings for some of the many waterfalls of the area, giving us an idea of the richness of the environment, not helped by the rain. Arriving at the perimeter of the Hydroelectric Station we passed the security check and arrived at the Centre.

On the access road two blue macaws flew overhead majestically and at the Visitors’ Centre a toucan was visible: so we stopped, camera in hand, seeking to take a quick photo before it could fly off, however it took off and before we know it the toucan was on the car’s window, looking inquisitively at everything inside. It was wonderful to see it so close, at liberty, interacting with humans, and clearly feeling secure.

After this marvel, a group of blue & yellow and red & blue macaws surrounded us in the trees, filling the air with cries, coming and going, and enjoying the setting.

Overcoming the urge to continue taking photographs, we came to the manatees. The Centre works with local communities to conserve manatees and prevent hunting of them; when one is found maltreated or captive in the community it is taken to the Centre for recovery and when possible returned to the wild. Today the Centre has 44 manatees, many of which are ready for release, others with permanent disability which prevent their return to nature. Seeing them, understanding their history, and learning their habits was wonderful. In the Centre there are also otters, and in addition turtles, some of which are local species, others being foreign to the ecosystem however having been recovered and requiring a place to live. Here all live in tranquillity, the birds live unhurriedly, there is no sense of the menace to nature here, allowing one to re-evaluate man’s interaction with nature.

We continued to Presidente Figueiredo and arrived at the Pousada das Pedras, out came Fernando, an enthusiastic sort, strong of voice and advice, clearly owner of the Pousada. Having established ourselves, we later heard his explanations of the places to visit, received a sticker for the car, and headed out to get to know the town. It had been some time since we had been in a town (versus a city); we found a place with good infrastructure and with the social ambience of a small community, in which one can walk, everyone using the streets for socialising, adolescents in the plaza practising folk dance, and children enjoying the fresh evening.

The following morning we had the pleasure of taking a shower both inside and outside our room, it had started to rain during the night and had not ceased, the rain falling generously, so that when we reached the breakfast room we were soaked. Breakfast included local delicacies, local fruit, cooked maize, yuca and anis tart, and maize breads, in addition to the inevitable sausage in tomato sauce and egg scrambled with something white.

We set off and took a side road to visit a waterfall (unmissable, according to Fernando). When we parked the car there was drizzle, however once we set off on foot the rain stopped and we could enjoy the setting. A beautiful waterfall with crystal red-brown water filling the basin, various caves round about ready to be explored, between photographs a high squeak indicated the presence of bats, which after various attempts we were able to capture with the camera, they were no more than 6 cm long, clinging to the cave walls, preferably in the most eroded places.

We continued north on a day with little sun; the combination of forest and lagoon was enigmatic and beautiful. Suddenly a long line of stopped trucks appeared in front of us, the road below them dry, indicating that they had been there for some time. We stopped and went on foot to find out what was going on: the road had collapsed on one side leaving a crater across half of the roadway, everyone stopped, a backhoe digging out the crater, the road closed. The obvious question “when will it be open?” Various answers, from “in the morning”, “in three hours time”, to “in 5 minutes for small vehicles”. We got back to the car when the road was opened to small vehicles and we were able to pass and continue with no further difficulty and with no trucks on the road.

We arrived at the Waraimi Atroiri Reserve, stopped at the Visitors’ Centre, and investigated their artesania. A young man welcomed us, and within minutes there were five surrounding us, looking at us as if we were rare animals. They explained the purpose and art of making each item, reminded us of the prohibition of photography in their territory and of stopping on the road. We carefully stowed our cameras, sensing clearly the invitation to respect their right to intimacy.

Passing through the reserve was a wonderful experience, the environment, despite the road cutting through it, breathing health, the inundated lagoons full of clear water, mirrors for the forest, the vegetation balanced, with no evidence of erosion, the orad clean, toucans flying overhead seeking the best Canopo, heart beating at the majestic macaws, and the monkey crossing the road calmly filling our cup with pleasure. We drove slowly, to delight in the air, the fresh smells, and the surprises of the setting.

Leaving the reserve, we reached the Police checkpoint, where we made our formal entry to the state of Roraima, and began our sojourn in the Amazonian Savana. Route BR174, for 270Km, is a quasi-surfaced road; we describe it as “quasi-“ because the relationship between asphalt and craters is about 3:1 and this section allowed us to understand why this is recognised as the worst federal highway in Brazil. Overcoming this challenge we arrived at Rorainópolis at the end of the day, minutes before dusk.

Rorainópolis and its Hotel Paraná offered us a singular stay. Here there isn’t much to do however we walked through the street until darkness prevented further exploration. We found three supermarkets, and one restaurant, at the gas station. The practice is to eat at stalls outside on the street, where one can eat meat or chicken, with sauces brought in plastic containers. The hotel has air-conditioning, with towels to cover the spaces left by broken windows, allowing one to sleep well after the exercise involved in hunting down mosquitoes and other flying insects. In the morning breakfast fulfilled the promise of the hotel’s publicity and was really excellent.

We continued on our way to Boa Vista in similar road conditions to those of the previous day as far as Caracarai. Then the road changed to full asphalt, well marked, and with pleasant scenery near the Rio Branco, we crossed the bridge, and started looking for signs to the centre or the cathedral to find our way to the hotel.

Boa Vista is a quiet place, with wide streets, a few old buildings renovated on the river bank, and little visible activity. The people are friendly and the town was a good place to take care of the routine tasks which were necessary and inevitable.

Besos para todos y todas

Alan y Marce.

P.S. on the way we crossed into the northern hemisphere; here is the ¨monument¨.

A few days in Manaus/ Algunos días en Manaus

After a night noticeably different to the senses, we came to life just before 1000h, the “pumpkin hour” for both breakfast and laundry, with the result that our awaking turned into a race to achieve both objectives.

We set out to explore the city, we had planned two nights before heading further north and our time was limited. This day “La Dilma” (as the kids call her) was visiting, and so the city traffic was a little more chaotic than usual. We went to the Amazon Theatre and were able to see the reactions of the masses to their new President. The security forces were present in volume, and their various barriers made clear the probable routing of the presidencial group. Her arrival was greeted with the same subtlety as her presidencial style, with no protests, only low key demonstrations of support.

Once the spectacle was over, it was possible to tour the theatre, see how it was built, and learn something of the dynamics of the era in which the dream was to be “civilised” like Europe, with all of the aberrations resulting from a boom, in this case the Rubber Boom. The Theatre remains alive, with an opera season in April and performances all year, unfortunately none of these being on a day when we would be in town.

In the city various 19th century buildings have been restored and turned into cultural centres for the population, all free, with various collections and city museum exhibitions. In the Palace of Justice there is a beautiful sculpture exhibition, in the Provincial “Palacete” an art museum, archaeological museum, numismatic museum, and museum of photography and sound. In the Rio Negro Palace and other private houses there are exhibitions of the “Rubber Era” and pf the possesions of famous (or important) people of the region. Hence between one site and another it was possible to recreate history and gain a very positive sense of the city.

To appreciate the setting we visited two of the three main natural attractions of the city: the Mingo Park and the Botanic Garden. The first, while being secondary forest, was perfect to understand three different ecosystems and the peculiarities of their vegetation, which would not have been possible without the services of two guides who volunteered to accompany us and explain the characteristics of each. We also noted the degradation of the environment resulting from the physical and chemical polution of the river valley – a good place to learn.

The Botanic Garden merits another visit, from our perspective; we did not arrive with sufficient time to take full advantage of its splendour, however we were able to appreciate the Museum of Amazonia, and something of the richness of the Primary Forest environment.

From the gastronomic point of view, the regional cuisine seduced us, at least in two locales where local ingredients were given space. On one hand we discovered a soup called Tacacá: a broth of Tucumí, with Bambú, manioc paste, and prawns, served in a fired calabash, and eaten (drunk?) from the calabash, with a wooden skewer to handle the solids. The flavour is unusual and delicious, piquant, hot, and exuberant. We were fortunate to try this when the kiosk was hosting a live concert of local music; we enjoyed the flavours, the music, and the general atmosphere of jollity.

In Banzeiro we ate Tambaqui ribs, imagining the size of a fish from which one can consume three ribs and feel sated. Also we ate smoked Pirarucú with another regional sauce. These dishes were very useful in satisfying certain oral pleasures.

Our time in Manaus allowed us to understand the challenges of the next part of our trip and realise that the time planned for the journey to Boa Vista was insufficient, such that we really needed three days for this.

Besos
