A circuit of Falcón / Una vuelta por Falcón

We continued on our way from Morrocoy, taking heed of the recommendations of the Three A's, hence once onto the highway to Valencia we headed fro our first stop in Puerto Cabello, avoiding trucks and potholes on the way.

Puerto Cabello was the first sea port of Venezuela, and is mainly a commercial town, with a small historic centre which has been renovated and includes a tourist information office. The facades of a few buildings have been conserved adequately, others are "quasi-colonial", many are in process of restoration, and others, while undoubtedly picturesque, owe their origins to a more recent period. A grreat advantage of the town is that it has a Post Office which is open, has stamps, and knows how many are required for postcards, and so we were finally able to post the postcards accumulated to date.

We then continued to Morrocoy and after passing the refineries and enjoying their malodorous atmosphere we arrived in an environment of palms and full of businesses ready to offer the services most appreciated by local tourists: barbecue and beer. In Tucacas the high-rise buildings occupy the entire seafront, such that the beach cannot be seen for concrete.

Finally we entered the Morrocoy Nastional Park via a narrow semi-surfaced road, between the mangroves and the woods. Soon we were tempted to stop to see crabs, scarlet ibis, and herons. We stayed at La Esmeralda, which was perfect for our visit: access to the sea and good food. Sunset was ideal for seeing birds in flight, the ibis, flamingoes, parrots, and herons returning home for the night, in the silence of the dock, accompanied only by "the plague" enjoying its evening meal.

We took a small boat and set off to explore the islands; clear water abounds and it is easy to appreciate the natural habitat. After visiting several noisy, tourist-filled islands, we disembarked at a deserted and tranquil beach. While this did not fulfil Marce's pre-established hopes for the setting for a day of relaxation (which was somewhat disappointing) it proved perfect. We establsihed ourselves below a palm tree and after spending some time in observation of the local fauna we took up our book with the intention of finishing it. Soon after a boat arrived, leading us to think "shit, more people", however the boat turned out to be a mobile marine cafe, which tours the islands offering food, hence we enjoyed some local fare, which while relatively costly was most convenient.

Soon afterwasrds another boat arrived: small girl, chairs, cooler, and other conveniences, cheerful greetings from everyone to everyone else. Surprisingly the lady approached us offering a plate of the food they had brought for the day, we thanked them and appreciative of their gesture, joined them to eat. In this manner we encountered Manuel and Reina, and their family: friendly and sympathetic Venezuelans, curious about our activities, and very affectionate. We appreciated once again the friendly and open nature of the Venezuelans, filling our experience with colour.

Our next "Falconian" destination was Coro. Here we found a conserved historic centre, with cobbled streets and well-preserved churches. We were unable to visit any of the museums, for various different reasons for their closure, and we enjoyed the distinctive experience of staying in a Training Hotel, where we passed an acceptable night, with evidence of the hotel's status as a school.

We visited the Paraguaná peninsula, the northernmost part of the South American mainland: initially visiting the Medanos (sand dunes) of the isthmus which impressed us with their beauty and extent; then to the "Centre of the Universe" according to the inhabitants of the village; finally arriving at Tiraya Lake, where we saw flamingoes and the huge deposit of garbage accumulated around the local village.

Next stop: the Sierra de San Luis. We stayed at the Finca El Monte, ideally situated to enjoy the rich environment of the area. We walked a sector of the Camino Real de los Españoles, from Acarite to Caburé, four hours of humid forest and cobbled path. Then the falls of Hueque, the village of San Luis, and the Haitón of Guarataro.

At the Finca we enjoyed the spontaneous and genial company of Rafael (in the photo), and the attention of Dominic and Virginie. This is good place to enjoy life.

We left Falcón travelling west, happy and without much more to say.

The route of contrasts / La ruta de los contrastes

We left Puerto la Cruz for Colonia Tovar, with the firm intention to avoid Caracas, its traffic and insecurity being attributes with limited interest for us.

We set off after rush hour, however this did not prevent us from witnessing 40 minutes of crazy, ridiculous, and bizzare behaviour on the part of the city’s drivers. Finally on the highway the scenery was dominated by industrial installations constrasting with beautiful Araguaney trees in flower covering the hills along the way. In the populated zones the commercial roadside offer was mainly sweets and yucca bread.

Upon entering the state of Miranda the roadside filled with fruit stands and tall trees on either side of the road; in addition we noted a significant change in road condition, whereas the road had been maintained (to some extent), it was now showing the impact of winter, with collapsed shoulders and many potholes, some deep, requiring constant attention.

When we arrived at Caucagua, the main highway turned north, however we headed south to Santa Teresa de Tuy and connected with a highway which passes south of the Caracas area and continues to Valencia, four lanes in good condition. Wide bridges contrasted with those in the previous section of road, which while enjoying attractive scenery, is narrow and stressful as a result of the habits of the drivers. When we approached the next junction a notice directed us to the left hand lane; we passed under a bridge and were then amazed to see a car heading towards us in the right hand lane of the divided highway, then turning and crossing the other three lanes to leave the highway to our left. We couldn’t believe it. We continued 200m to find ourselves facing a line of contradictory painted markings on the road, then a small hand-painted sign telling us to turn left, where we found the main bridge closed, and signs (“road temporarily in contra-flow”) indicating that we should return on the “wrong” side of the road we had taken, and it appeared that we then had to cross to the other side of the highway to leave it by an entry lane in the opposite direction (as the other car had just done). We took this route with some trepidation, particularly when we had to take the entry lane in the wrong direction, fearing that we would encounter vehicles head-on entering the highway, consistent with the purpose of this single lane, however this lane was the only way to approach the bridge we needed to cross, with no signs, no separation barriers, and no indication that this was safe. We were blocking the path of a large truck, and moved aside to let it pass. The driver stopped and asked us where we were going, then cheerily told us that this was indeed the way we had to go and to follow him, this giving us some sense of protection as we exited by the entry lane and finally arrived on route 12, somewhat un-nerved but happy to change pace.

We started to ascend the sierra, which we subsequently discovered was the Guatapo national park. The road was steep and with frequent loss of shoulder through landslide, however the scenery was beautiful, the forest luxuriant and attractive. Once at the crest we turned right and after a basic regional lunch, “Hallaca de chicharrón” and “meat empanada”, we started downhill through the same beauty until we arrived at the Santa Teresa open garbage dump, via a twisting two-lane road. We then reached the main Caracas-Valencia highway, in perfect state, four lanes with hard shoulders, and traffic more or less orderly. We took this, with some surprise at the conditions, as far as La Victoria, where we left for a different route.

The route to Colonia Tovar is narrow, with desolate scenery for most of the ascent, steep and tortuous; we climbed from 400m to 1200m in 20 Km and were then surprised by German architecture, German names, vegetables, fruit, and a beautiful cloud forest environment with tall palms; then an abrupt descent into the heart of Colonia Tovar.

The place is picturesque and pleasant, its steep streets full of stores, mostly day-to-day necessities, a few with tourist focus, with well-made wooden signs, some of which are almost works of art. At 1830h all is quiet, most of the stores have closed, only a few remaining open, convenience, beer, or restaurants.

Here we tried papaya wine, which when cold is drinkable, and which when warm might be good for a sauce. The corresponding German traditional sausages (a little bland) and sauerkraut were much better than in other German colonies in the continent.

In addition to the appeal of the place, we enjoyed our conversation with Andrés, Alberto y Alberto, three gentlemen we encountered in the hotel and with whom we discussed their and our interests, and who also gave us advice on travel in Venezuela. Their recommendations were clear, precise, and assured, their warmth most positive, and so with salutations, and with their advice in mind, we went to bed (in a most robust bed), and adjusted our travel plans accordingly.

The following day we went to El Limón, a town adjacent to the Henry Pittier National Park, famous for its birds. Unfortunately mist and bureaucracy prevented us from viewing the bird life in the park, hence we ended up watching “Rio” in the local cinema.

Besos a todos,

Alan y Marce

P.S. This journey was a good reflection of Venezuela, 400 Km of contrasts. The following day we head for Morrocoy.

New!

We wanted to arrive in Puerto la Cruz, not for touristic reasons but to see friends, so after a good breakfast with Basilio in Maturín, we left for the Caribbean coast. On the highway, as in previous days, police, more police, and this time more traffic circulating.

After enjoying the tall flares of Jusepín, with associated environmental reaction, seeing the road verges filled with the Polar crop (a type of Venezuelan beer), buying fruit and honey at the roadside, and categorising the various driving styles of the Venezuelans in a hurry, we arrived at the apartment where we would stay thanks to the generosity of Keith and Jose Ignacio, and were soon deep in rich conversation on our trip and life in general.

In addition to being inspired by the rosy dawn each morning, we wanted to visit the Bocas de Uchire to photograph birds. Hence we mounted an expedition with Keith, whose childhood memories were triggered by getting into the rear seat of the car, and who consequently spent every moment working on obtaining “dulce de leche”. After 10 Km he was asking for dulce de leche, his answer to every question was “dulce de leche”, we wondered whether this was a Scottish form of saying “yes” however no, ducle de leche was an obsession.

We arrived at the Bocas and starting looking for birds. Since we had found no dulce de leche, we gave Keith a camera and for a while dulce de leche was forgotten and the camera shutter was fired constantly. We continued on our way, eventually the request for dulce de leche started again and we stopped at every place with the look of a possible source to ask for it.

After two hours of birdwatching, and a failure to convince the males that it would be a good idea to spend the night at a local posada to appreciate the dawn, we headed back to the city. On the way we found a vendor of Golfeados, since Keith was unfamiliar with these, and there was no dulce de leche to be found, we bought these and from this moment were “golfeadoed”.

We stopped at a “queseria” (cheese shop) on the highway, in search of the famous dulce de leche, came upon two items which were sufficiently similar that it seemed they would be satisfactory, however we remained golfeadoed. At this point the world was divided into two: before and after golfeado. It seemed that the impact had been so great as to relegate the dulce de leche into insignificance, at least until the evening, when it occurred to us to order dulce de leche as dessert. Various eyes looked at us with some stress; we offered golfeado as an alternative, however no, we wanted dulce de leche.

We enjoyed our stay for the sense of home: we cooked, read, washed clothes, repaired what had been damaged, and enjoyed our days in calm. We enjoyed the company, our visits to La Fonda, and the shared dinners.

We also suffered the peculiarities of the city: the traffic, the inefficiencies, closed offices, strange hours, unclear procedures, and finally… those problems which accumulate and make less efficient.

Thanks Keith and Jose Ignacio for your support and generosity, we passed a few delightful days and enjoyed greatly your company and complicity. For both of you the recipe for golfeado can be found at: www.venezuelatuya.com/cocina/golfeados.htm

El Delta del Orinoco New!! in EN

We thought we had done enough wandering in the last few days, however when we learned of the biodiversity of the Orinoco delta, we realised that we had to seek an opportunity to see birds and enjoy the tranquillity of the natural setting.

We arrived in Maturín, washed clothes in the bathtub and set out the following morning for San José de Buja, a tiny village and access port for the delta, where we met Victor.

In less than 10 minutes we were in a curiara (small river craft) and in another world: brown water, trees on both banks, small craft passing by, and a different physionomy in the people, the Warao.

After 30 minutes we saw a small dock, and this was our “hotel”: Orinoco Eco Lodge, a place perfectly integrated into its environment. Its dock extends into a dining area, bar, kitchen, and hammocks; from this area extend wooden catwalks, connecting with the rooms, which are simply platforms on stilts, with palm roofs, a bed with mosquito net, a hanging basket for belongings, and two slices of log for seats. Also connected to the central area is a structure which houses bathrooms and showers. The surroundings are forest, with its humidity, song, inundation of the banks (below the docks and platforms), wildlife, and exuberance.

It was characteristic of this part of our trip to be in a boat. At dawn, in the morning, in the afternoon, and at sunset, we were out in the delta. At dawn, in the silence of a dugout canoe, in the company of Doroteo, seeing birds and monkeys in the trees. Also at this time, walking the catwalks we could see many fascinating species.

The other expeditions were in groups led by James, who, in addition to guiding us through different settings and giving us the opportunity to appreciate the sunset in a different place each day, gave us insight into the the secrets of the forest: water (from palm fruit and from the bejuco tree), food (termites and grubs), and how to pass safely across the surface.

We also visited the home of a Warao family, appreciating their home, the artesania of the women, and how to prepare vegetable fibre for weaving.

The group expeditions were notable, especially for the inability of Simon and his mother to remain silent, and also for the conversations of the Swedes and the Basque girls, as well as for the talents of all in extricating the boat from the river vegetation when the water level dropped.

After three days of birds, rivers, local food, and greenery, and two nights of full moon, we returned to the world in which the song of nature ceased to be easy to hear.

This is a place to which to return, especially to prepare with Antonio a dish of moriche grubs, for which we have already thought of various succulent recipes.

New in EN!!!!!

After verifying that our muscles were in adequate condition to brake suddenly in case this were necessary, without dying in the attempt, we headed north to visit Canaima.
Route 10, much travelled by us in its southernmost 200 Km, continues with the descent of the Sierra Imataca, surrounded by tropical forest, impoverished but still attractive, and various waterfalls. At the bottom of the descent we arrived at Las Claritas where everything changad; the road becomes narrow, cast off beer cans appear more frequently on the side of the road, and a more decadent environment arrives.

We arrived at Tumeremo to experience socialist gasoline, for which we had to wait in line for an hour and four minutes to be able to fill the tank at a price of 10 “strong” centavos per litre. While waiting in line we were able to observe a team repairing the gas station roof in the most unsafe manner possible; fortunately they did not fire up the non-explosion-proof drill used in fixing the new roof sheets.

After learning that the only hotel in the town with a car park had no space in it, we chose to continue to El Callao, where we stayed in the Hotel Plaza Central, which is really an excellent car park with rooms available. This was probably the worst lodging we have experienced, particularly in terms of the appalling state of the room, in terms of hygiene, however we were able to achieve a minimum state; we obtained clean sheets for the bed, pillow cases to cover (and isolate) the pillows, and were able to remove the worst of the dirt stuck to the floor. In addition, we established procedures to allow the use of both showers and toilet.

We explored the town, heard the complaints of older citizens regarding the deterioration in the carnival, made an expedition to the Post Office, where although they had stamps, they were unclear on the stamps required for international mail to the relevant destination countries. The night over, we enjoyed a delightful breakfast at the bakery on the corner and set off for Ciudad Bolivar where we were to meet the representatives of the Casita at the airport.

The Posada lies on the outskirts of the city and is a mixture of rest house and bar for a German ex-hippie seeking a rule-free third-world location. We left the car there while visiting Canaima.

The first thing we had to deal with was the presence of the Tucan tour group, 27 people travelling South America in a converted truck, camping in each stopping point. While it was clear to us that this is not our preferred form of travel, there was no doubt that we were disposed to enjoy the experience.

Both to and from Canaima we travelled in a Cessna 206, single motor, with 6 seats. These flights were characterised by the quality of the accessories, and the safety induction: newspaper stuck to the windshield as a sunblind, and complete absence of any comments on safety, which made it unsurprising that the other three passengers were happy to chat on their mobile phones through the first half of the flight. The view of the impressive Guri reservoir was unfortunately marred by the state of the windows.

Once in Canaima, we took to the canoes to start our voyage of five hours to the camp, 15 people per canoe, a guide, and a captain. Once everyone was ready we set off. The river was dark transparent water, Wide enough for several vessels, however the low level of the water meant that in one section we had to disembark and walk 40 minutes upriver to reach water deep enough to continue.

Although a tough journey, at least according to one’s buttocks, the scenery is majestic. The Auyán Tepuy, with its 700 Km2 extent, defines the river’s course, and allows progressive access to the different facets of the gorge, with spectacular views, particular as the sun sinks, highlighting the eroded surface.

In addition the passage was impressive in showing us how the crew navigated many rapids, while heading upstream, in a vessel of its size (uphill whitewater rafting in a canoe!). In various places we sensed that we were travelling in an articulated vessel.

When finally we reached the campsite, and the “Tucans” rushed off without much discretion to pick their hammocks, as frequently occurred we, chatting with the crew about the surroundings and also about their skills, arrived last. Our friendly guide, clear that we were not part of the “Tucans”, set up two hammocks in a “VIP Zone”, i.e. alongside the crew, which proved most convenient.

We explored the river, bathed in it, took some photos, arranged our stuff, read a bit, and then dined. After reading some more we took to our hammocks to sleep. We passed a pleasant night, the breeze providing air-conditioning and the rain providing a lullaby, we needed nothing more.

The following day we set off to walk to the waterfall, a stroll of two hours, one on “level” ground, and one on a steep ascent. The rain forest environment, full of roots, ferns, fungus, and many different flowers, provided many distractions.

Finally we arrived at the first viewpoint and there was the waterfall… another waterfall, high and attractive. When we arrived the clouds were obscuring the upper part of the fall, however from the river we had been able to see it all.

In the pool at the base of the waterfall there was time for analgesic hydrotherapy, and once again to become conscious of one’s knees.

We returned to the campsite, lunched, organised our stuff, and set off in the canoes to return to Canaima, once again manoeuvering the canoes through many rapids, with a stop at a sandy beach on the way. On arriving at the falls into Lake Canaima, we took to a truck for the last kilometre to the village, where we established ourselves in rooms at the base camp.

In the morning we explored the falls into the Lake of Canaima, and then set off for our return to Cuidad Bolivar. This trip with the “Tucans” was very enjoyable, particularly in terms of their behaviour: 27 people travelling together with a social structure established and difficult to penetrate, because any change would threaten the tense calm which allowed everyone to survive. Their social practices were marked by individual interests within the group; we often sensed that we were in the presence of a horde of Visigoths, at each mealtime everyone would arrive at once to ensure obtaining the appropriate food ration, and would consume it at once. In spite of the harmonic appearance, there were no salutations wishing “good evening”, “bon appetit”, hence our greetings and salutations were typically met with the suspicion of a hungry dog with a bone. It was interesting to note how throughout the day each member of the group would separate from the others, as if to take time to breathe, during which we noted a tendency for comment by the others on the absent one.

After three days of exposure to Latin American manners, salutations, and aimiability, we began to receive positive responses… it was worth the effort.

Besos a todos

P.S. The Fall of the Magic Waters is the translation of the indigenous name for the waterfall. It seems to us preferable to use this name.
