The journey to Chillán was short and on of one of the fast roads which permit nothing more than driving following the road signs. Initially we took a local road which gave us the opportunity to see Chépica, a small town with architecture traditional in the area and which was heavily affected by the earthquake (photo 1). The on Highway 5 we stopped at Curicó, a bigger city, with a large green and picturesque plaza (photo 2) and at Talca, one of the cities most affected by the earthquake.

We arrived at Chillán around 1700h on one of those days when the sun was not very clear on its role and the rain was undecided on whether to enter the picture. If we had limited expectations of the history of the city, and the evidence of its past, we did hold expectations with respect to the local market and the artesan market. Near the city we were conscious of an "Old Chillán¨ and so we included this in our agenda.

We started with the markets: not much to see, a holiday, local market closed, and the artesan market with a few locales open and little of interest. We visited the Artesan Fair: nothing new, except for some pear empanadas, which we included in our research.

In ¨Old Chillán¨, we discovered an interesting history: Chillán has moved four times, it was founded in 1580 and destroyed in battles with the original inhabitants of the area, floods, and earthquakes. Around 1663 it was re-established and then destroyed by an earthquake in 1751, when it was decided to rebuild it in the location now known as ¨Old Chillán¨. In 1835 another earthquake destroyed the city totally and then was built what is now called Chillán, so that we are now seeing a city a couple of hundred years old. Unfortunately an earthquake in 1939 destroyed the city completely and left 35,000 dead. The city was rebuilt, and in 2001 the major buildings were seriously affected by another earthquake. Finally this year the city suffered new damage in the February earthquake. This city is an example of ¨seismicity¨ without doubt! In ¨Old Chillán¨(which continues as an independent municipality) the oldest thing which we saw, as in the photo above, was the name on the bus stops!

After learning this story, and before another earthquake, we left for Temuco, however before this these lovely tulips appeared in the car and thanks to the person in the photo embellished our journey and caused curiosity and amusement in the truckdrivers on the way. We were very happy with the flowers and the smiles of others.

On the way the scenery began to change gradually from vines to timber, trucks carrying logs, wood processing plants, forests of single or two species, and rivers full of water. When we saw the latter we said ¨what a long time since we saw rivers like these!"

Temuco is a city with contemporary infrastructure, cars, avenues, noise, and little tradition evident. Despite its being an area with strong Mapuche influence and population, their presence is not evident, at least in the city. We visited the local market and encountered a few weavings for tourists: poor quality, high cost, industrial wool, and modified traditional technique. So we started a search for an organisation of Mapuche Women Weavers, however could not locate their base, and their most recent outlet was closed.

We visited the Regional Museum, where we gained further awareness of the history of the region, its population, and the process of colonisation in the middle of the 19th century, and then visited the Chol Chol Foundation, a Fair Trade NGO which works with around 150 Mapuche women weavers and commercialises their products. They will be attending Expo Artesanías in Colombia; we hope you will be able enjoy their work.

Having nothing more available to do, and taking into account the continuing rain, we continued on our way to Pucón.

Santa Cruz

On Friday we started on our way to Santa Cruz, uncertain what we would find, and with limited hope that we would discover a strong colonial ambience. Hence we decided as follows: if we found little of interest we would continue to Chillan the following day.

On the way we visited Rancagua and found a picturesque exhibition of armour, and there heard the phrase of the day in a conversation between two 10 year old boys: ¨Look, it´s black armour!¨ with the response ¨Yes, that´s what they use for killing dragons¨. After this there´s no more to be said; simply fantastic.

We arrived Santa Cruz around 1700h and started our search for a hotel; there were few options, the best hotel completely outside our budget and intentions, a second group less costly and with totally full, until finally we discovered a basic place with a room for the night. So we installed ourselves and set off to explore on foot.

When we returned to the Plaza, almost everything was closed except for one of the artesania places, whose owner was very friendly, and surprised to see a car from Colombia. He looked after us and suggested places to eat and places to visit the following day. In our walkabout we saw a lot of evidence of earthquake damage in various buildings in the town, and then went to eat at a Peruvian restaurant.

The following day we planned to visit the Colchagua Museum in the morning and then attend a festival in a local town, which plan we failed to accomplish. The Musuem is not only the boggest private museum in Chile, it is in fact a marvelous museum, with well-curated collections, well preserved, and surprising. Every room stimulated our senses and created surprise, questions, a desire for more information, and an interest in the next room. It seemed never-ending, having displays for every moment in history from the birth of the planet to the start of the modern wine industry. Our favourites: the fossil display, pre-Colombian art display, display of “huasos” (Chilean cowboys), arms display, automotive display, and railways display. We spent 6 hours in the museum, and were conscious that our focus on the last two collections did not do justice to them.

The day in Santa Cruz was magnificent, we lunched and dined at Vine Bello, an Italian restaurant with good food and service. It should be considered when you visit.

Our second night was spent in our second lodging, the first night’s bed and breakfast having had a room for only one night. This was outside town, with a friendly staff and an unusual means of providing light into the room.

On arriving in Santa Cruz we had seen a large poster advertising the 7th Concourse Internacional de Carruajes (International Carriage Concourse) at the Viña Santa Cruz vineyard, over two days of the long weekend. So on Sunday we headed off to Lolol, through attractive countryside, to arrive at the concourse. We parked and then walked a short distance to the field in which various people were walking the course. All around were horse-drawn carriages, with various numbers of wheels and horses.

People looking after horses, carriages, walking around in various attire, from local cowboy to English country gentleman/lady to Shopping Mall best attire. We were able to wander about close to the horses and their attendant personnel; to satisfy our curiosity we chatted with a polite gentleman and asked how the competition worked. There are various, and the one about to start involved driving horse-drawn carriages around a course of cones in the fastest time, with penalties for knocking down cones.

After the official pleasantries the competition started, and we enjoyed seeing many different combinations of horse/carriage/human being in action. The atmosphere was a combination of small town rodeo and English Country Fair, and alongside the course were stands with food and artesania, including local sombreros, belts, etc.

As you can see it was an enjoyable opportunity to see horses and drivers in action in an activity which clearly requires skill. It was also entertaining to see the dynamics of the people involved in the concourse: an exercise in social anthropology of various social classes. Both of these were good spectator sports.

We then drove the short distance to Lolol, a small village with colonial houses, sadly largely damaged by the earthquake, and with a small museum of artesania, which was excellent.

After this we headed north, with some concern that it might take some time to travel to Merchague, since the road is shown on the map as unsurfaced. In the event we found an excellent tarmac road and soon arrived at our destination, which had been chosen since it was celebrating its annual municipal fair.

At this fair, there were: a performance of ¨ranchero¨ music for the visitors; a Rayuela championship - a Chilean sport, which we were able to understand thanks to the generous explanations of the competitors (anyone interested in learning more please request further details); an exposition of artesania; places to eat;
wine stands; and exposition of horses, sheep, and goats.

It was interesting to see both the similarities and the differences between the gatherings in Lolol (the Concourse) and Merchague (the fair), in terms of liveliness, friendliness, and enthusiasm: all were present in both, however the former was more reserved than the latter. Both were very enjoyable, and our stop in Lolol Museum added further riches to the day.

Back to Santa Cruz, for a night at our third lodging, this time a place focused on visitors on wine tours: three hotels in three nights in the same place(!).

Santiago: un pausa necesaria y divertida / Santiago: a necessary and enjoyable stop

After an hour on route 68 we arrived in Santiago, took the Costanera Autopista, based on uncertainty, with the result that we arrived rapidly at the hotel, ready to start our enjoyment of the city, and to take the opportunity for the 20,000 Km service of the car.

The first afternoon we decided to explore the city centre, after various administrative items which always take time and are unavoidable. We waled through various streets, drank good coffee, looked for information and headed for the National Histroy Museum, which closed at 1730h and for which there remained insufficient time, and so we continued exploring the city and its most well-known viewpoints.

The second day we left the car for its maintenance, after the typical interrogation on the car: where we had come from, the same for the car, the "hours" it had taken, and then the questions which answer themselves but appear most important for many, and which we usually refrain from answering as we are tempted: Question "So you came by car, overland?" Answer: "no, we took the car apart, put the parts into small cases with a lot of care, put them on the plane, and then when we arrived at the airport here we put the car together again." After a 5 second delay, with a strange look, our interlocuter then laughs and says "you didn't do that did you, really?". So we continue with the nest question.

We walked to the nearest metro station, and encountered the Dominican Village, a complex of colonial construction at the end of the 18th century, which in addition to providing various religious and administrative services to the community, has a very extensive artesan centre where one can find products of better quality, designed to capture the tourists' resources.

The visits to the National History Museum, the Pre-Colombian Art Museum, and the Museum of Memory, were very fulfilling. In the first we extended our knowledge of the the history of the country, somewhat influenced by the celebration of the Bicentenary of Independence but well-presented and balanced in information, until the beginning of the Pinochet dictatorship.

The Museum of Pre-Colombian Art offers a wide display of art from different cultures, from Mexico to Chile, with pieces really beautiful and well curated. Unfortunately the textile art display was closed for remodeling and so we couldn’t see it. In the photo far left, a ceramic figure of the Maya Jaina culture. At immediate left a ceramic piece of the Veracruz culture.

The Museum of Memoria and Human Rights is a pause for contemplation, a place to reflect on violence and learn from it. In this museum the Chilean experience during the Pinochet Dictatorship is vividly reconstructed, and information is made available, placing it in a world context. Although it is a wrenching experience, nonetheless it is a necessary reflection. (

We ended the day with a delicious dinner at “Como Agua para Chocolate” (“Like water for chocolate”), in Bellavista, with an ambience built for its diners and whose food is really good, or at least so it seemed to us.

On the third day we visited the Museum of Contemporary Art, which is visibly affected by the earthquake, not only in its structure, but also in its spirit. Then we had an excellent visit to the National Library, where we enjoyed a temporary exhibition of maps associated with the Bicentenart theme, saw a series of photos on mime, drank coffee, and enjoyed the bookshop, all of which nourished our search on cobbled streets, and allowed us to satiate our literary curiosity.

In the evening we attended the glorious concert by Les Luthiers: Lutherapia. We enjoyed it infinitely – two hours of laughs and surprises experiencing the production and seeing them perform with their instruments. It was marvellous! In the photo at left, the wonderful "baloncestófono" or "basketballophone"

We left Viña del Mar after one night, visiting the Anthropological Museum, where we found an informative exhibition of the indigenous cultures of Chile, including a special section on Easter Island, and then visiting the National Botanic Garden.

We arrived late afternoon at the hotel on Cerro Alegre, small, friendly, and a great place to relax, and then enjoyed some time installing ourselves. Later, dinner, a short walk, and writing by the fire.

We spent next day in the streets, walking from here to there, satisfying our curiosity and the
frequent question "what's around this corner?". Distinct from Viña, a city for tourists, beaches and gringos seeking the gringo everywhere, Valparaiso has its own identity, and particular way of life, with its tall narrow houses snaking up the heights. If the cloudy Sunday wasn't ideal for appreciation of the city through the lens, it was most convenient for climbing and descending the steep streets and staircases.

The Municipal Library being closed for repairs after the earthquake, there was nothing else to do but enjoy the streets and the coffee in the cafes.

We decided to write this story in reverse, and it's not clear why, perhaps to leave in everyone's mind the best of the day, or to honour a highly appreciated moment, or both, or neither of the above, in any event the story is as follows:

It was hard, and on this hardness the muscles relaxed slowly, releasing the twinge which arises once they are finally at rest, a delicious pleasure slowly filling the body, and the night opening up possibilities, we had a bed in which to sleep!

Prior to being in this situation, a short conversation had taken place with the owner of the hotel, who had informed Marce that our promised room had been taken, however she could offer another. This taking place after having sought unsuccessfully in every hotel in town a place to sleep.

R/ NOoooooooooo, estamos llenos, no hizo reserva?

3. No! No tengo reserva. R/ Hay que hacer reserva!

4. OK, gracias.

It was still light when we started looking for a hotel, and it was now an hour and a half later continuing the search:

1. Good evening, how are you doing? A: Fine, what can I do for you?

2. Do you have a double room available for three nights? A: NOoooooooooo, we are full, do you have a reservation? (Mental response: If we had made a reservation we would not be asking for a room, we would be in one).

3. No, we don't have a reservation. A: You have to have a reservation!

4. OK, thank you. A: Wait a moment (mental response: Oh good, despite my misgivings they are going to offer a suggestion, how helpful)... Here is a card so that you can make a reservation next time.

5. Oh! Thanks so much.... (Out of respect for our public we prefer not to publish the mental response in this case).

There were exceptions, for example the hotel with a sign outside saying "we have no rooms"; another which called several other hotels to verify that they had no rooms, this one really friendly.

We had arrived in the city via the glorious route 5, and its rest stops at the COPEC gas stations. This then connected to the trunk highway south, an excellent road which surprised us, given the state of the same route eastwards. However prior to driving 300 Km south along route 5, we had the pleasure to visit the Fray Jorge Nature Reserve.

We took a small local road which was indicated at the exit from the highway, 27 Km of highly enjoyable unsurfaced road, hardly any corrugations, passable with no problem at 70 Km/h, winding smoothly with ups and downs through semidesert scenery. Then 10 Km more inside the reserve, a road more tortuous and with steep ascents, to arrive at the cloud forest. Adjacent to the coast, with the westerly winds assuring a constant mist on the western slope of the hills, generating a damp microclimate appropriate to the ecosystem. We walked via an established trail and enjoyed the silence, the tranquillity, the ambiance of the place, with small flowers and an improvised lunch to accompany us.

We had left La Serena after visiting the post office and obtaining various stamps for our correspondence.

New! En la Serena (ES -EN)

We were ready to leave for Viña del Mar, plan prepared and thinking of hotel options, when it occurred to us to check the route. After the corresponding analysis we elected to head for La Serena.

We started the route via route 60 later to arrive at the marvellous route 5, a four lane highway, wide, well-marked, and flowing. And so alter 5 hours we arrived at our destination. The countryside was green, with cactus in flower, birds, trees, and windmills enriching the scenery.

La Serena is the second oldest city of Chile, its foundation driven by the need to receive support from the vice-regency of Peru during early colonial times. Today it is a large city, the predominant architecture in the historic centre being republican, although some older churches are preserved. We did not encounter any cobbled streets however various photographs from the early 20th Century showed their existence.

We enjoyed the museums, local life, the Café del Teatro, which offers a good espresso with galletita, newspaper, and friendly faces, and the best thing was that we were able to buy tickets for Les Luthiers the following week!

Besos para todos y todas
