New!!!!

We left Bariloche taking the famous route 40 to El Bolsón, a town in the midpoint of the day’s journey, described as a picturesque spot, full of artesans and people of the sixties, and so our spirit was disponed to encounter the Vilcabama of Argentina. When we arrived the streets were full of the artesan fair, which was full of people. We parked and went to wander through the fair.

We encountered a very “hippy” fair, full of general Argentine artesania, as well os much in the “general” category. A stand with another form of empanada, and others with cakes and other things to eat. Without much more to see we went to a local café looking for a Light lunch, where having noticed a UN-spec LandCruiser with German plates, we enjoined an animated conversation with Eric, a Greek-Hungarian lone wolf, in the midst of a South American journey, having accumulated a million Km on the road. In addition to sharing a laugh with him, in his infinite sagacity, he shared with us information on the routes, along with other items to enjoy.

We then headed for Trevelin, passing through the Natural Park of the Alerces. Once again beautiful woods, a few birds, scenery of rivers, lakes, and volcanoes, and the first wild horses grazing here and there. Passing on from this paradise we arrived in Trevelin.

Arriving in the evening everywhere was full, there wan little information on hotels, and the tourist office was closed. A policewoman told us that there would be no hotel space, and we World have to go to Esquel for lodging, because the town was hosting the provincial games. However some wonderful people helped us to locate a room in the Hostal La Estancia.

After installing ourselves and going out to eat in more or less the only restaurant in the town, we became conscious of our fatigue and decided that this would be the perfect place to take a rest day and rise late: small, little to do, a good bed, and quiet.

Our second day was spent as follows: 55% sleeping, 10% for various administrative items, 20% to visit the regional museum, and 15% to dine and to enjoy Welsh Afternoon Tea, one of the tradicions of the area; and so we were finally successful in not only extending our awareness of the Welsh colonisation of Patagonia, but also to rest.

Colorín colorado este cuento se ha acabado./ Fee fi fo fum, this tale is done.

Photos!!!!

The day was sunny on leaving Puerto Varas; after many days of rain, a day of sun was much appreciated. The route to General Samoré Pass started via Route 5, and then route 215. A few Km from the start of the latter we came across the first surprise: the Automobile Museum of Moncopulli. A genial gentleman invited us to the restaurant first where we enjoyed a delicious trout au beurre, meanwhile we were wondering what the museum had to offer.

There we found a huge collection of cars, especially Studebakers, the favourites of the owner, because his father had owned one (or more). Seeing the collection was marvellous, not only because one can compare many models of the same make, but also see other cars, various historic ítems, and hear music from the 50s and 60s.

We continued on the road to the border, crossing the Chile Natural Park, vistas of forest, broken by the ocasional waterfall and by crystalline rivers, the sounds of birds, a marvellous road, a gradual ascent, and the wind at the pass, simple “tranquil”. Later the snowy peaks announced the border and the scenery changad drastically. A smooth descent, to the friendly welcome of the Argentina border post. Then Natural Park Nahuel Huapi, and beautiful lake scenery occupied our senses.

The first population encountered was Villa la Angostura, a place eminently picturesque and touristic, with scandalous prices and delicious chocolate. We continued along the lake, also called Nahuel Huapi, to arrive at San Carlos de Bariloche, straight to the hotel and its restaurant.

San Carlos de Bariloche is a city for the tourist, full of shops, people, and offers of every kind. Its quasi-Alpine ambience influences the architecture with a curious impact. The city captured only a few hours of our day, during which we encountered the best quality woven poncho which we had seen in Argentina. Two men unloading their pickup on the beach, having arrived from Santiago del Estero; the poncho, along with other ítems, had been woven by their wives, and they had driven 1000 Km to sell these in the fairs of the most touristy locations.

We spent our time in the nearby parks, the photos telling the store; for us it was a day of tranquillity, clean air, and beautiful birds.

We closed the day with dinner at the Rincón Patagónico (Patagionian Hideaway), a restaurant offering tradicional food, outside the city, where we enjoyed a lamb on the stake (grilled lamb) which was excellent. The best part of the experience was meeting Ignacio, and brilliant and crazy guy, capable of reading his clients and building friendly relationships instantly. Until today’s post you must have thought us ungrateful, but no, Ignacio: here we are thinking of you, with a huge smile on our faces.

P.S. We ate raspberries covered in chocolate, in Rapa Nui, absolutely delicious, you have to try them.

Now with Photos!!!!

Chiloé is a singular place. The information available on the island describes it as a picturesque paradise, lively, and vibrant with cultural identity, and so we held expectations. We arrived in the midst of rain, or more accurately the rain decided to pursue us the whole day, however after our visit we understood that Chiloé is as it is with or without rain.

The towns of importante are Castro and Ancud, both with around 40,000 inhabitants. Castro, our first destination, is set on a hilltop, however some of its “barrios” are built on the coast, with houses on wooden pilings in the tidal zone: the famous “palafitos”. These are very attractive; the hotel in which we stayed is one of these (Palafitos 1326, where we passed a delicious night, dining on a tasty “domicilio”, which is to be recommended). In the town there is not a lot to do, and the museums on offer are more virtual than real.

We visited the Chiloé Nacional Park, and could walk in the Tepual Forest. The tepual is a hardwood, viable in very damp environments. The forest is on the seashore and typical of the reserve. We also travelled to another island to the east of Chiloé to visit churches, designated Cultural Patrimony of Mankind, which retain the Chilote architectural style.

Returning to the main island we decided to visit the northeast coast and Ancud. We found beautiful beaches and rocky and entertaining coastline. We went to the islets of Puñahuil, known as the only place where nest both Magullan and Humboldt penguins, however on arriving at the beach found the sea blocking the way and when we sought someone to explain how to reach the boats heard the one thing we did not want to hear: no-one was going to the islets, no-one was taking groups to the islets, the sea was too rouge… it was not possible to see the penguins. In the photo you can see the only penguins which could be seen.

On the way back to Ancud, we decided to visit two of the forts which were built during the spanish colonisation. The first 41 Km from the town, which gave us an appreciation of the beautiful scenery and the scale of the construction. In the distance in front of us we could see small islets which were populated with groups of penguin-like birds: on closer inspection of the photos they proved to be Imperial Cormorants, however the initial illusion was entertaining.

The day ended in Puerto Varas, for a final night in Chile prior to crossing the border to Argentina once again.

New photos!!!! The lake route /La ruta alrededor de los lagos

We left Valdivia and headed southeast towards Lake Llanquihue, passing through countryside reminiscent of parts of Germany, in terms of the architecture of the farms, the forms of the fields, and the weather(!).

We reached the lake at Puerto Octay, which was one of the early settlements in the German/Chilean colonization in the late 19th century, and which retains many buildings from this period and the early 20th century. We stopped for coffee and küchen in the Hotel Haase (1894), which still has some vertical walls, and then visited the Museum of the German Colonisation, where we were treated to a personal tour. Puerto Octay seems very much to retain its origins and was a worthwhile stop. We then headed south stopping for photos of Germanic (and wet) donkeys, and germanic farmhouses.

Next stop: Frutillar. This is another lakeside town, with evidence of more wealth than Puerto Octay, including an impressive new Theatre on the water.

Then on to Puerto Varas, arriving on a rainy Sunday evening. We found a room in “The Guest House” which we subsequently discovered is one of the oldest houses in the town. The rooms are high and spacious, the breakfast extensive, and we enjoyed a good conversation with the owner, who also turned out to be the propietor of the Chocolateria in town, which offers a fine range of artesanal chocolate. Puerto Varas offered limited entertainment, at least on a rainy Sunday evening, however we dined on tasty salmon in “Donde el Gordito” and caught up on the blog.

In the morning, the town was busier (not difficult) and after visiting the Chocolateria we headed off along the lakeside to Ensenada and then up the river to the Saltos de Petrohue (The Falls of Petrohue). The water is crystalline, the rocks volcanic black, the backdrop (which deigned to reveal the lower slopes of the Osorno volcano at least) is impressive. A beautiful place! We then continued up river to Lago Todo los Santos, where we walked on the black sand beach and enjoyed a light lunch before retracing our path to Puerto Varas and heading south through Puerto Montt to the ferry to Chiloe.

In summary: Puerto Octay – most original in terms of its history; Frutillar – most wealthy; Puerto Varas – most touristy (a sort of “Whistler on the lake”); the lakeside – pleasant views, with an alleged backdrop of volcanoes (not seen other than the lower slopes of one volcano briefly from the falls).

New!!!! ¡Que vivan los lobos marinos! / Valdivia, where the sea lions live!

The route to Valdivia: once again through lumber forests via the unmissable route 5. On leaving the city, rivers and small lakes appeared, with the resulting presence of birds in the wetlands, and we were reminded that we were in the ¨Region of Rivers¨.

In Valdivia we took the coast road to look for a hotel and enjoy the sunset. We arrived at the port and decided to get out of the car to take some photos. Seeking something to photograph, our eyes encountered the presence of large organisms with moustaches: here were the long-awaited sea lions at liberty, sleeping alongside the riverwalk, with a discreet notice saying "these animals bite - do not disturb!¨. How fascinating!

As you can understand we took some time to take photos and enjoy the sight of the anatomy of these animals. Once I had dragged Marce away, it was possible to find a hotel and start our exploration officially.

When we think of Valdivia, other than the sea lions, four things come to mind: one is the International Cine Festival, which was a perfect coincidence! The day we arrived, once we had obtained our credentials, we took in three entries in the international film category, enjoying something different; we couldn´t do more since the demand for the other movies in which we were interested was greater than the number of seats available.

The second recollection is the forts at Niebla and Corral, and the beauty of the coastal route. In the estuary of the river Valdivia the Spanish built 16 forts to protect the area from pirates. Four still exist, in various stages of repair: two in Corral, one in Niebla, and one on the island of Mancera. In addition to visiting two of these, it was enjoyable to converse with the Captain of one of the ferries we took, and to hear the explanations of the pirate we met at the fort in Niebla (Nuestra Señora la Pura y Limpia Concepción de Monfort de Lemus de Niebla - we are impressed that we recall the full name!). We also travelled part of the Valdivian Forest Route and enjoyed the scenery, unfortunately we chose the wrong reserve to visit because when we arrived it was closed (or more accurately, abandoned).

The third point of importance is represented by the Artesanal Beer Festival; the day after our arrival this was opened, and hence we attended to enjoy it: after sampling 8 types of dark beer our chosen winner was Bundor. So we left slightly inebriated, but only slightly.

Finally, a marvellous place in Valdivia, which doesn´t depend on luck, is the port market. Here, in addition to being able to buy vegetables, fish, and fresh seafood, the variety of wildlife taking advantage of the fish cleaning process is huge: pelicans, cormorants, various gulls, and the fantastic sea lions! It was great to see, and we went every day to see the show.

Pucón, una pequeña delicia / Pucón, a small delight

Following various suggestions that Villarica and Pucón were well worth visiting, we set out from Temuco towards Lake Villarica. Villarica lies at the west end of the lake, and we continued along the lakeshore to Pucón. The scenery is similar in many ways to that of various areas of the British Columbia coast, and there was much variety in the tree life, both in species and colour. Arriving in Pucón, we encountered a small(ish) town with a positive ambience. There are cafes, bookshops, restaurants, and a variety of stores, including Lippi, a place with excellent outdoor wear, in which they were surprised by our glee in encountering the store, and our subsequent satisfaction when we located the vest we were seeking (jacket without sleeves, not undershirt, for readers in the UK).

We went to L’Ecole seeking a room, however they have no secure carpark, and were emphatic that we should seek to secure the car. On their recommendation we found a room at Geronimo, which proved to be friendly and good. We subsequently patronized L’Ecole’s vegetarian restaurant (three times in two days) where we found the best soup since leaving Bogota, and good main dishes and coffee. Both places are recommended.

It was rainy when we arrived in Pucón, and not much better the following day, so the views of the volcanoes were virtual, however the skies cleared a little both days, giving us a good sunset, and a sense of the snow-topped mountains, if not the postcard peaks which were promised.

We were interested in the volcanic caves and the nature reserve close by, however the frank advice of the park ranger led to our enjoying the former through photos on his computer, and then taking the road across the river towards Lake Caburgua. We passed through rich green forest countryside, with a beautiful river flowing through the valley. We were pleased to be in an area with water in the river channels, and amazingly transparent water at that. After half an hour on the gravel road, we arrived at the

Ojos del Caburgua (Eyes of Caburgua) which is a set of falls dropping into a clear blue expanse as the river passes over a drop of 10 m or so. We continued to Lake Caburgua, with a black sand beach, and then retraced our track a short distance to continue to Lake Tinquilco, at the entry to the Huerquehue National Park. Following a sign indicating “Sendero Mirador del Lago” (Trail to Lake Viewpoint) we ascended through forest, rapidly finding that the “trail” was ill-defined to the point of being non-existent, and after an appropriate period enjoying the trees, returned to the road, whence we returned to Pucón, for lunch at L’Ecole prior to leaving for Valdivia.

Overall Pucón seemed to us a pleasant town, where we enjoyed good food and drink, and which has beautiful scenery and fresh air around about.
