Following various suggestions that Villarica and Pucón were well worth visiting, we set out from Temuco towards Lake Villarica. Villarica lies at the west end of the lake, and we continued along the lakeshore to Pucón. The scenery is similar in many ways to that of various areas of the British Columbia coast, and there was much variety in the tree life, both in species and colour. Arriving in Pucón, we encountered a small(ish) town with a positive ambience. There are cafes, bookshops, restaurants, and a variety of stores, including Lippi, a place with excellent outdoor wear, in which they were surprised by our glee in encountering the store, and our subsequent satisfaction when we located the vest we were seeking (jacket without sleeves, not undershirt, for readers in the UK).
Tras varias sugerencias sobre Villarrica y Pucón como lugares que valía la pena visitar, nos propusimos ir desde Temuco hacia el lago Villarrica. Villarrica se encuentra en el extremo oeste del lago, y continuamos a lo largo de su orilla hacia Pucón. El paisaje es similar en muchos aspectos a varias áreas de la costa de Columbia Británica, con mucha variedad en arboles, tanto en especies y como en colores. Al llegar a Pucón, nos encontramos con un pequeño (isimo) pueblo con un ambiente positivo. Hay cafés, librerías, restaurantes, y una variedad de tiendas, incluyendo Lippi, un lugar con excelente ropa para actividades al aire libre, cuyo personal fué sorprendido por nuestra alegría al encontrar la tienda, y nuestra satisfacción posterior cuando encontramos el chaleco que estábamos buscando (Chaqueta sin mangas, sin camiseta, para los lectores en el Reino Unido).
We went to L’Ecole seeking a room, however they have no secure carpark, and were emphatic that we should seek to secure the car. On their recommendation we found a room at Geronimo, which proved to be friendly and good. We subsequently patronized L’Ecole’s vegetarian restaurant (three times in two days) where we found the best soup since leaving Bogota, and good main dishes and coffee. Both places are recommended.
Fuimos a L'Ecole buscando una habitación, sin embargo no tenían estacionamiento seguro, e hicieron hincapié en que debíamos buscar un lugar seguro para el carro. Atendiendo su recomendación encontramos una habitación en el Hotel Gerónimo, que resultó ser bueno y con gente amable. Subsecuentemente visitamos varias veces el restaurante vegetariano L'Ecole (tres veces en dos días) donde encontramos la mejor sopa desde que salimos de Bogotá, bueno platos y café. Ambos lugares se recomiendan.
It was rainy when we arrived in Pucón, and not much better the following day, so the views of the volcanoes were virtual, however the skies cleared a little both days, giving us a good sunset, and a sense of the snow-topped mountains, if not the postcard peaks which were promised.
Estaba lloviendo cuando llegamos a Pucón, y no mucho mejor al día siguiente, por lo que las vistas de los volcanes eran virtuales, sin embargo, el cielo se despejó un poco los dos días, dándonos una buena puesta de sol, y un sentido de las montañas cubiertas de nieve , sinembargo, no pudimos ver los picos nevados prometidos en las postales.
We were interested in the volcanic caves and the nature reserve close by, however the frank advice of the park ranger led to our enjoying the former through photos on his computer, and then taking the road across the river towards Lake Caburgua. We passed through rich green forest countryside, with a beautiful river flowing through the valley. We were pleased to be in an area with water in the river channels, and amazingly transparent water at that. After half an hour on the gravel road, we arrived at the
Ojos del Caburgua (Eyes of Caburgua) which is a set of falls dropping into a clear blue expanse as the river passes over a drop of 10 m or so. We continued to Lake Caburgua, with a black sand beach, and then retraced our track a short distance to continue to Lake Tinquilco, at the entry to the Huerquehue National Park. Following a sign indicating “Sendero Mirador del Lago” (Trail to Lake Viewpoint) we ascended through forest, rapidly finding that the “trail” was ill-defined to the point of being non-existent, and after an appropriate period enjoying the trees, returned to the road, whence we returned to Pucón, for lunch at L’Ecole prior to leaving for Valdivia.
Estábamos interesados en las cuevas volcánicas y en la reserva natural cercana, sin embargo el consejo sincero del guardaparque nos llevó a disfrutar las cueva a través de las fotos en su computadora, y luego tomar la carretera al lado del río hacia el lago Caburgua. Pasamos por un rico bosque verde, con un hermoso río que atraviesa el valle con aguas sorprendentemente transparentes. Despues de media hora de camino destapado,
llegamos a Ojos de Caburga, una serie de caídas de agua de 10 m más o menos que llegan a un lago de aguas azules claras. Continuamos al Lago Caburga, con una playa de arena negra, luego volvimos sobre nuestros pasos una corta distancia para continuar hacia el Lago Tinquilco, a la entrada al Parque Nacional Huerquehue. Después de un cartel que indica "Sendero Mirador del Lago" subimos a través del bosque, encontrando rápidamente que el "camino" no estaba bien definido hasta el punto de ser inexistente; después de un período adecuado para gozar los árboles, regresamos a la carretera y volvimos a Pucón, para almorzar en L'Ecole antes de salir de Valdivia.
Overall Pucón seemed to us a pleasant town, where we enjoyed good food and drink, and which has beautiful scenery and fresh air around about.
En general Pucón nos pareció una ciudad agradable, donde disfrutamos de buena comida y bebida, y que cuenta con bellos paisajes y aire fresco sobre todo.
