Chiloé es un lugar singular. La información disponible sobre la Isla la describe como pintoresca y paradisíaca, viva y exultante en expresiones culturales, así que esas eran nuestras expectativas. Llegamos en medio de la lluvia o mejor la lluvia decidió acompañarnos durante todo el día, pero después de nuestra estadía comprendimos que con o sin lluvia Chiloé es como es.Chiloé is a singular place. The information available on the island describes it as a picturesque paradise, lively, and vibrant with cultural identity, and so we held expectations. We arrived in the midst of rain, or more accurately the rain decided to pursue us the whole day, however after our visit we understood that Chiloé is as it is with or without rain.
Las dos ciudades mas importantes de la Isla son Castro y Ancud, ambas con 40000 habitantes aproximadamente. Castro, nuestro primer destino, esta organizado en la cima de la montaña, pero algunos barrios se han construido alrededor de la costa, por lo tanto son casas sobre bases de madera: los muy famosos “Palafitos” estas zonas de la ciudad se ven lindas y el hotel en donde nos quedamos estaba en uno de estos sitios (Se llama Palafito 1326, pasamos una noche deliciosa, cenamos comida a domicilio realmente rica, se los recomendamos). En la ciudad no hay mucho que hacer y la oferta de museos es más virtual que real.
The towns of importante are Castro and Ancud, both with around 40,000 inhabitants. Castro, our first destination, is set on a hilltop, however some of its “barrios” are built on the coast, with houses on wooden pilings in the tidal zone: the famous “palafitos”. These are very attractive; the hotel in which we stayed is one of these (Palafitos 1326, where we passed a delicious night, dining on a tasty “domicilio”, which is to be recommended). In the town there is not a lot to do, and the museums on offer are more virtual than real.
Visitamos el Parque Nacional Chiloé, y pudimos recorrer un bosque de Tepual, un árbol de madera dura, capaz de resistir entornos muy húmedos. Este bosque queda al lado del mar y es característico de la reserva. Un poco más al este de Castro, avanzamos en nuestra ruta para conocer algunas Iglesias Patrimonio de la Humanidad y que constituyen el estilo arquitectónico Chilote.
We visited the Chiloé Nacional Park, and could walk in the Tepual Forest. The tepual is a hardwood, viable in very damp environments. The forest is on the seashore and typical of the reserve. We also travelled to another island to the east of Chiloé to visit churches, designated Cultural Patrimony of Mankind, which retain the Chilote architectural style.
De regreso al continente decidimos visitar la costa noroccidental de la Isla y Ancud. Encontramos playas hermosas y paisajes más montañosos y divertidos. Fuimos a los Islotes de Puñahuil, reconocidos por ser un lugar en el que anidan Pingüinos de Magallanes y de Humboldt, después de llegar a la Playa y encontrar el mar metido en medio del paso y de buscar algún ser viviente en la casa más cercana, escuchamos lo único que no queríamos escuchar en ese momento: no estaban navegando, no habían expediciones a los Islotes, el mar estaba bravo…. No era posible ver los pingüinos. En la foto los únicos que pudimos ver.
Returning to the main island we decided to visit the northeast coast and Ancud. We found beautiful beaches and rocky and entertaining coastline. We went to the islets of Puñahuil, known as the only place where nest both Magullan and Humboldt penguins, however on arriving at the beach found the sea blocking the way and when we sought someone to explain how to reach the boats heard the one thing we did not want to hear: no-one was going to the islets, no-one was taking groups to the islets, the sea was too rouge… it was not possible to see the penguins. In the photo you can see the only penguins which could be seen.
De regreso hacia Ancud, decidimos visitar dos de los fuertes construidos durante la colonización española. El primero a 41 Km. de la ciudad, nos permitió apreciar un paisaje hermoso y la magnitud de las construcciones, a lo lejos en unos islotes del frente pudimos ver algunas aves paradas como Pingüinos, después mirando las fotos comprobamos que no era posible: eran Cormoranes Reales, pero la ilusión fue deliciosa.
On the way back to Ancud, we decided to visit two of the forts which were built during the spanish colonisation. The first 41 Km from the town, which gave us an appreciation of the beautiful scenery and the scale of the construction. In the distance in front of us we could see small islets which were populated with groups of penguin-like birds: on closer inspection of the photos they proved to be Imperial Cormorants, however the initial illusion was entertaining.
El día termina Puerto Varas, una noche más antes de cruzar de nuevo la frontera hacia Argentina.
The day ended in Puerto Varas, for a final night in Chile prior to crossing the border to Argentina once again.
