(now in English) Brasilia.. Brasilia

El interés en Brasilia era obvio, experimentar una ciudad planificada en la modernidad, una ciudad joven, nacida en las puertas de los 60`s, en un contexto mundial de ruptura, eso era muy atractivo.

Our interest in Brasilia was obvious, to experience a planned modern city, a young city, born in the early 1960s, in a global culture of change, this was very attractive.

Llegamos en la mañana y comenzamos a experimentar la conciencia del especio, mucho espacio alrededor de cada cosa, de cada vía, de cada objeto. Nuestro hotel en SHTN, cerca del Palacio Residencia del presidente también estaba lleno de espacio dentro y fuera.

We arrived in the morning and began to experience the sense of space, a lot of space around every building, every road/street, every object. Our hotel in SHTN, near the Presidential Palace (home of the President) is also full of space inside and outside.

Como corresponde a los espacios y tiempos en Brasilia, tomamos un taxi y nos dirigimos a un lugar cercano a nuestra área de interés donde pudiéramos comer algo y descubrimos sensorialmente algo que habíamos leído sin dar mucho crédito, los centros comerciales están en el corazón de la vida cotidiana de la ciudad. Este es el lugar que alimenta a la gente, al lado del sector de gobierno y de comercio, los restaurantes están dentro de los centros comerciales, así que muy seguramente Saramago encontraría en esta ciudad mucha inspiración para La Caverna.

As appropriate to the space and time in Brasilia, we took a taxi headed for a place near our zone of interest where we could eat something and seek insight into something we had read, that the shopping centres are the heart of daily life in the city. These are where people eat, alongside government buildings and businesses, the restaurants are inside the shopping centres, hence Saramago would find much inspiration for La Caverna here.

Visitamos el mercado indígena y en el camino tuvimos dos hallazgos casi características de la ciudad. Uno las distancias son enormes, las supercuadras hacen honor al superlativo y tienes que caminar mucho para llegar a donde deseas, si a esto se le suman la dificultades de ubicación y localización las cosas pueden empeorar. La parte de “Usted esta Aquí” es fácil, lo difícil es saber donde queda aquí. La nomenclatura de la ciudad es completamente diferente a la forma acostumbradas. No hay nombres o número de calles, hay sectores, supercuadras, entradas, trechos, Cj. No todas están marcadas y entonces al final tienes sospechas de la ubicación pero no certezas.

We visited the indigenous market and on the way made two discoveries characteristic of the city. Firstly, distances are enormous, the "superblocks" are justly named and one has to walk a long way to reach one's destination within a "superblock", particularly when one's difficulties are augmented by the challenges of ubication. The "You are Here" part is easy, the difficulty lies in where to head to reach your destination. The nomenclature of the city is completely different from other places in the world. The streets have no names or numbers, there are sectors, superblocks, entrances, stretches, and "CJ"s. Few are marked and one is always doubtful of arrival at one's destination.

El otro hallazgo es que mucha de la oferta cultural de Brasilia está en preparación, el mercado cerrado por cambio de exhibición, el memorial de los pueblos indígenas cerrado, La biblioteca abierta pero solo el espacio físico, la colección no se puede consultar porque aún no está clasificada, la catedral cerrada por mantenimiento, así que llegar a un sitio y encontrar que no era posible entrar no fue especialmente sorpresivo.

The other discovery was that much of the cultural offering of Brasilia is "in preparation", the market closed for change of exhibition, the Memorial to the Indigenous Peoples closed, the National Library open but not yet with books available (!) since they are still being catalogued, the Cathedral closed for repairs. All in all, it was somewhat frustrating to arrive in these sites to find that we could not enter them.

De otro lado encontramos sitios deliciosos como el centro cultural del Banco de Brasil, un complejo cultural con café, librería, exposiciones y salas de cine. Allí vimos la exposición de la foto, con formas, materiales y manifestaciones singulares.

On the other hand, we found other wonderful sites, like the Bank of Brasil Cultural Centre, a complex with café, bookshop, exhibitions, and cinemas. There we saw an exhibition represented with this photo, with singular forms, materials, and manifestations.

Hablemos de la arquitectura de la ciudad, la mayoría de edificaciones asociadas con la identidad fueron diseñadas por Niemeyer, incluyendo el hotel en donde nos alojamos. Estas frecuentemente rompen con los conceptos rectilíneos de las edificaciones o por el contrario los exalta hasta el extremo y en todos los casos, hace relevante un conceptos social superior a la estructura misma. Para el momento de la construcción 1958 representaron un quiebre franco con la tradición y hoy siguen siendo atractivos y arriesgados.

To speak of the city's architecture, the majority of structures associated with its identity were designed by Niemeyer, including the hotel in which we stayed. These frequently break traditional rectilinear assumptions, or alternatively take them to extremes, and in all cases incorporate social concepts beyond the buildings themselves. In the period of construction, from 1958, these represented a total break from tradition, and remain attractive today.

A pesar de la planeación, la forma de avión del diseño de la ciudad y sus construcciones, Brasilia no fue pensada para los peatones. La fiebre del automóvil en los 60`s impidió generar espacios para que el peatón disfrute de la ciudad, realice actividad física en las calles y esté seguro. Encontrar un paso peatonal es una rareza y mucha veces es preciso cruzar avenidas de 6 carriles sin ninguna protección. Allí tener carro y moverse en carro es indispensable. Tampoco fue pensada para los turistas y conseguir mapas que te permitan ubicarte en la ciudad es una odisea, agradeceremos siempre a la persona del hotel que metió un excelente mapa de la ciudad en nuestro documentos de la ruta y nos permitió alcanzar independencia al conducir.

Despite its planned layout, in the form of an aircraft, Brasilia was not designed for pedestrians. Car fever in the 1960s impeded the inclusion in the city of means for pedestrians to enjoy the city (to say nothing of the distances involved), to exercise in the streets, and indeed to be safe. Pedestrian crossings are rare, and it is frequently necessary to cross 6 lanes of traffic with no protection. Getting about requires access to a vehicle. Nor is the city prepared for tourists and obtaining maps which provide clear information on getting around is an odyssey; we are thankful for the person in our hotel who thought to obtain and include in our route information a good map, allowing us to sally forth in a car.

Explorando los restaurantes en las zonas residenciales dimos con un lugar con música en vivo, escuchamos en un concierto casi bipersonal a una excelente banda de Choros y Sambas: Baxo Clero, que nos permitió ampliar nuestro conocimiento de estas manifestaciones y pasar una noche rica.

Bueno esta es la historia, no alcanzó el tiempo para disfrutar la naturaleza circundante y los parques de la ciudad pero si para conversaciones deliciosas, un lugar para la lengua.

So this is the story, there was insufficient time to allow is to enjoy nature in the environs of the city, or the parks, however there was time for wonderful conversations, a place for talk.
