Desde Tucumán hasta Córdoba / From Tucumán to Córdoba.

This trip took three days, the first part was 525 Km, initially in this scenery, which continued unchanged (plus or minus a distant tree) for 500 Km.

For the last 25 Km, a new environment announced our proximity to La Cumbre, a place valued by the inhabitants of Córdoba for its tranquillity and beauty. For us, it was a place most singular; totally quiet until 2030h, with a few stores opening around 1800h, evoking a strange sense of being somewhere else.

The following day (furthermore Marce´s birthday) we continued to Santa Catalina, Jesus María, and Córdoba. After 20 minutes we came upon a rehabilitation centre for howler monkeys, and so we decided to stop for a visit.

These monkeys have been rescued from the trade in animals, and arrive at the centre with a variety of experience, to start their life at liberty. They are in four groups, and live freely in four different protected areas.

Also in this area live various birds, all those shown are resident in the centre.

Continuing to Santa Catalina, we visited the Jesuit Estancia; when we enquired about the possibility of refreshment at the Rancheria which is part of the Estancia, we found the place enchanting. The owners were most welcoming, and we elected to stay for the night, which included local musicians at dinner, and allowed us to celebrate Marce´s birthday appropriately.

The next day we went to Jesus Maria, another "Estancia" where we could understand more of the action of the Jesuits in colonial times.

A tale of two cities / Un cuento de dos ciudades Photos Later

Tucumán is a place with two pulses: during the day it is a sleepy village, with nothing much happening; in the evening it wakes up and is thronged with people enjoying themselves.

The Plaza is attractive, with trees and a variety of architecture, from colonial to recent (more recent than colonial). The principal focus of its history is the Casa de la Libertad, where the “founding fathers” of Argentina signed the declaration of independence in 1816. The Casa is well organised and presented, and well worth the visit.

There are various parks and a museum of the sugar industry in the largest, which is interesting in that it was rescued from demolition and is now one of few surviving examples of the past which remain.

On Sunday at midday, the Tucuman Symphonic Band played in the Plaza, to a mixed audience of passers-by. It appeared that they were enjoying themselves, and the interplay between the Conductor and the Master of Ceremonies was very amusing.

To our surprise, in the evening the streets are full of people, out and about and enjoying themselves. The place is a hive of (guess what) activity. At midnight on Sunday evening, we were surprised, and enchanted, to come across a square (adjacent to the Casa de la Libertad) where people of all varieties dance traditional dances (Chacareraa), simply for their own pleasure, dressed in jeans or more formally, without any pretention.

All in all, a place with a sense of identity, enjoying itself, and a pleasant place for a day or so.

"Oh Tucuman moon,
little drum of Calchaqui,
companion of the cowboys
on the Tafi Trail..." (a well known song throughout South America)

So many times we have sung this and finally understand what it means! We set out on a route to know the Calchaqui valleys, from Salta to Cachi, then Cafayate, and finally to Tucumán. We will describe this through four themes: nature, towns, the WIne Route, and ruins.

To start with: nature. Our route started with a gradual ascent alongside a river in a fertile valley which slowly become drier. We crossed the "Cuestas del Obispos" (Bishop´s Pass) on a steep and winding route from which we could appreciate the canyon below, and also see for the first time the dust in the atmosphere resulting from the ash from burning sugar cane in the area, and finally arrived in the Cardon (cactus) National Park, which offers a unique scenery full of this giant cactus.

Leaving this area we arrived at the river Calchaquí and encountered the contrast between the fertile valley, the arid and coloured mountains, and the volcanic ranges further away. This scenery was maintained until we reached the Tafí Valley in Tucumán Province.

We arrived in the midst of many pilgrims on their way to Salta: on foot, on bicycle, in groups, all for the Virgin of Salta. In the service station the obligatory question "Did we come for the Virgin?". The honest reply "No". The response "How fortunate you are; it's the most importance celebration in Salta, have a stamp for the Lord and the Virgin so that you have a souvenir." Our reply: "Thanks a lot."

So began our arrival in Salta. The hotels full and the streets packed, lots of activity, only room for one night, nothing could be done, so we relaxed to enjoy the city. Salta appears to be a very promising place, good places to eat, at least three museums to visit, and architecture predominantly replublican, with various colonial buildings to visit.

We enjoyed our evening with a good dinner, good conversation, and a pleasant walk in the cool evening air. Unable to sleep longer, we arose to enjoy the attractions of the city. At 0930h we were ready to sally forth on this provincial holiday in celebration of the Virgin. On entering the streets all seemed well, lots of activity, albeit focussed on the celebration, cafes full, shops open, and so we headed for the first museum, when things changed: the museums were closed... all of them... it was impossible to see anything which we had planned. We walked here and there, saw what we could, and at 1300h we had covered everything available.

After a referendum, to choose between Procession and Cavern (as writes Saramago), we chose the cavern to seek movies and after strong consideration, found ourselves at three in the afternoon watching "Cats and Dogs II", and eating M&Ms. Then we walked back to the hotel to catch up on the blog, download routes from the GPS, and telling ourselves that Salta was most interesting and that we should return; this time the VIrgin had sabotaged our visit.

En las Yungas - Parque Calilegua - in the Yungas

We visited San Salvador de Jujuy, capital of the province with the same name. A quiet place, a small city with good attitude to tourism, and enough infrastructure to solve problems and a little more. So we enjoyed the cafes, obtained some useful information, and explored the streets.

From Jujuy we headed for the Argentine Yungas, specifically the Calilegua Nature Reserve, and area to the north of Jujuy which allowed us to enjoy the beauty of the ecosystem, and its flora and fauna.
Here are a few photos from Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning. It was wonderful to enjoy the tranquillity of this area, to enjoy its paths, and listen to the breeze. In winter this environment must be bewitchingly beautiful.

Desde Chile hasta Argentina por el norte / From Chile to Argentina from the north.

Mandarin (oranges) in the car, now ready to leave, Marce heard a voice saying "Go ahead, you have priority", arriving at the crossroads and with limited visibility of the junction. She saw the bus stopped at the junction, arrived at the junction, and, was then surprised by two girls on bikes, ignoring the rules to sail through the junction without stopping, and so she stopped. The bus then continued, and a strained atmosphere arose in the car.

The curious atmosphere continued, something had occurred, she wondered whether this was a result of stopping at the junction for the girls? The reply: no, this was fine, their failure to stop had caused the frustration... once past the bend we would arrive at the border post. Continuing around the bend, we arrived at the border post, where a bus, in the category of large buses, was parked in front of the post. She passed the bus and parked in front, so that we could embark on the formalities. Looking over to the immigration office, she could see a line of 30 or 40 adolescents, all with letters in hand and other papers. She thought "how enjoyable, going on a trip"... the atmosphere did not improve.

We joined the line, a face of frustration on my face, Marce said that she would check with the Customs whether we could clear the car while waiting for Immigration. I replied "OK, I will keep our place in the line". She went to the other office, took car of the formalities, no problems, the agent very friendly, saying something like "Marcelita, everything fine, I hope you come back", and she happily replying "Of course", then returning to the immigration line. I offered to fetch coffee, and went to bring the thermoses from the car... the atmosphere warmed slowly.

Together in the line, the deep breathing and pained expression continued, and Marce thought "What is the problem? The kids have the right to leave" and so asked "It bothers you a lot that the kids are in line ahead of us?". My reply was "It's all related". Her thought was "What are you talking about, hombre?" and she said "What is related?" I responded "The bus, if the girls on bikes had stopped, and if you had passed in front of the stopped bus, we would have arrived first, and saved waiting in this line which is like waiting in line at Houston Airport when the BA is late... etc, etc..." All was suddenly revealed to Marce, and an exclamation escaped along the lines of "Aha, these kids are from the bus?", and she couldn't stop laughing; until this point she hadn't connected the events, which for me had been visible from the moment of seeing the bus heading to the border post. The atmosphere then improved.

After an hour of formalities, we started on our way, a gradual ascent which took us to various salars and turquoise lakes to the east of SP de Atacama, the road well marked and with stops set up as viewpoints, making the trip a delight.

We arrived at the Jama Pass and started the process of legalising our presence in Argentina: many buses, a long line, and a biting wind. We joined the only line and waited, until someone pointed out that this line was for groups and so we found a desk marked "Gendarmería", where a serious policeman asked his questions, noted our particulars in a ledger, and stamped everything twice, after which we could continue to Immigration. We arrived at the door to hear an agent saying "individuals; I am not handling groups", and the Supervisor saying "Help me out with this one". So we passed on to four more forms (original and copy of each), details of the car, passports, and then OK. Now for the Customs, where a serious agent (very very serious) started the process of stamping the Triptyque, accompanied by a detailed interrogation of our intentions, relations, and every other form of "...tion" possible, before stamping the book and announcing in a serious voice "and now I will inspect the vehicle". He arose from his desk, appearing to be 2 metres in height, and with every step appeared to shake the earth. We arrived at the car, opened the trunk, selected one bag, opened it, touched it briefly, and then said "Very good... safe journey." Once again, time for laughter.

We started to cross the puna of Argentina, with Argentine vicuñas, Argentina water, and Argentine Salars, photos here, photos there, coloured mountains, and then "bang" our fourth flat tyre of the trip. We parked the car against the wind, donned jacket and down vest against the temperature, and we ready to change the wheel: we did this in 28 minutes and worked perfectly together. 10 Km later we were in Susques (our destination) and a place to repair the tyre. The latter we achieved, and once again had a spare; the former did not appear attractive, since it was a small place with hardly any facilities, and so we thought again and continued to Tilcara.

Tilcara is an interesting spot, lots of activity, many tourists, hostals and restaurants available, all appeared well, and so we had happily arrived in the right place!
