While our plan included visiting the Lençois Maranhenses, we were clear that this would depend upon weather conditions and the state of the roads. Based on the information available, the route to Barreirinhas, key entry point to the area, was completely surfaced, which information, combined with multiple references to the beauty of the area, confirmed our plan: a night in Barreirinhas with a visit to the reserve, and then on to São Luis.
- No conseguimos hotel en Barreirinhas: llamamos a todos los hoteles disponibles y la respuesta en todos los casos fue No tenemos, asi que gracias a las gestiones de Marcio logramos contar con una reserva en un pequeño lugar 150 km antes de los lençois llamado Barra Grande.
- Salimos de Jericoacoara y la ruta que tomamos fue diferente a la que usamos cuando llegamos, entonces todo el análisis de riesgo para el manejo de la vía se fue al traste. Yo me divertí mucho conduciendo por al arena, los charcos, pasando un río y cruzando las diferentes huellas. Creo que Alan no tanto. Al final estábamos en la vía a salvo, sin contratiempos y listos para tomar hacia el oeste.
Cuando finalmente logramos encontrar a la duena de la posada y ubicarnos en el lugar, salimos a explorar Barra Grande, el primer encuentro una ruidosa playa invadida por un camión con altavoces proporcionando música de carnaval para todos, sin embargo cada uno en sus locales particulares ofrecáa a sus clientes música específica, creando un conjunto polifónico simultaneo dificil de comprender.
When we finally found the owner of the pousada and set ourselves up there, we went out to explore Barra Grande, first finding a noisy beach, invaded by a “loudspeaker truck” emitting Carnaval music for everyone, despite which each locale continued playing its own music at high volume, creating a polyphonia difficult to comprehend.
De día en la playa multiples grupos de Kite Surf hacían su acto aprovechando el viento fuerte en la noche algunos paseaban por una calle de tierra que además de los hoteles tiene todos los "restaurantes de la ciudad", allí saciamos nuestra hambre y comprendimos que es posible que en otra epoca del año sea un lugar rico para visitar.
In the day the beach is frequented by Kitesurfers practising their art and enjoying the strong wind; in the evening people pass up and down the dirt road which, in addition to pousadas, is the site of most of the village’s restaurants, and where we sated our hunger and came to the conclusión that at other times of year this would be a good place to visit.
Al día siguiente después de un desayuno ligero salimos hacia Barreirinhas, si lográbamos llegar allí antes de las 11:00 podríamos ir a los Lençois , contrario a nuestros deseos y a la información disponible en los mapas, dejamos pasar el cruce necesario y terminamos cerca de São Bernardo, recorriendo 60 Km. innecesarios y gastando 45 minutos de nuestro precioso tiempo. La visita al lugar se iba por entre los dedos como la arena.
The following day after a light breakfast we left for Barreirinhas, with the plan that if we arrived prior to 1100h we could visit the Lençois. Contrary to our plans, and to the information on the maps, we failed to take the turn required and spent 60 Km and 45 minutes on the road to São Bernardo, returning to the junction to take the right road. The time for our visit was slipping away like sand through our fingers.
Regresamos al punto del cruce y por una ruta de características dudosas llegamos a Tutoia. En el puente de acceso unos amplificadores con camión animaban las actividades carnavalescas del lugar, Alan dijo “mi amor esos son amplificadores, foto! Foto!", después de atender su pedido iniciamos el cruce del puente y justo en el momento en que nos encontrábamos al lado del camión sonó la música, Alan soltó el timón, se tapó los oídos y grito de dolor, su ser completo se transformó por lo que para el fue un “Asalto Auditivo”. Seguí moviendo controlando el carro mientra parábamos en un lugar más seguro y sin dudarlo volví a conducir, Alan seguía perturbado.
Having taken the right road, of doubtful characteristics, we arrived at Tutora. On the access bridge a huge “loudspeaker truck” was in place to provide music in support of the Carnavalesque activities of the town. Alan said “My love, those are loudspeakers! Photo, photo…”. After attending to this request, and starting across the bridge, at the moment of passing the truck, it started to play music (!); Alan let go of the steering wheel, clapped hands to his ears, and shrieked with pain, completely transformed by that which he subsequently described as “auditory assault”. We continued, Marce controlling the wheel until we could stop somewhere safer and change drivers, Alan continuing perturbed.
Continuamos a Paulino Nevez por una ruta recién asfaltada y absolutamente deliciosa. Al llegar al lugar Newton (alias Gordinho) nos intercepto en el camino. Preguntó nuestro destino y nos dijo que él nos guiaría porque la ruta era un camino por entre la arena, nos dijo que el riesgo de perdernos o pegarnos era alto y que si pasábamos por alguna zona con agua poco estable estaríamos dentro de uno de los ríos que había que cruzar. Alan no entendía nada, pensó que yo estaba contratando servicios de turismo y definitivamente el tiempo no nos alcanzaba. Cuando le expliqué respaldó la decisión con algo de escepticismo.
We continued to Paulino Neves on a road newly asphalted and in wonderful condition. Once there we were flagged down by Newton (alias Gordinho). He asked our destination and then said that he would guide us because the road was a track through the sand, that the risks of losing our way, or getting stuck, were high, and that it we took the wrong route across one of the rivers we would stay there. Alan did not understand, thinking that the conversation was an offer of tourism, which our remaining time would definitely not permit. Once the offer had been clarified, he supported the decisión, albeit with some scepticism.
Preparándonos para salir comprendimos que realmente iríamos entre dos vehículos, Gordinho adelante y Raimundo escoltándonos. Me explicaron los retos del lugar, como debía seguirlos y me dijeron: “tranquila si se pega nosotras la sacamos”. Cuando escuché el panorama completo pensé que esta era una ruta para Alan, así que cuando llegó del baño le dije, es mejor que manejes tu esto no parece muy fácil; él
gustoso superó la perturbación e iniciamos el camino.
Preparing to leave we found that we would be travelling between two vehicles, Gordinho in front and Raimundo behind, escorting us. They explained to Marce the challenges of the route, how to follow the trail, and then said “Don’t worry, if you get stuck we will get you out”. Once hearing the complete panorama, she thought that this was a route for Alan, and so once he returned from the bathroom and heard that it would be better for him to handle the route, he was able to overcome the auditory perturbation and start out.
Dos minutos después comprendimos que en esencia no había ruta, solo huellas de carros. El paisaje absolutamente hermoso lleno de arena, dunas y lagunas con agua, algunos burros y poco ganado, la temperatura era alta 41o C y nuestra ansiedad también. La ruta fue absolutamente exigente, quedamos atrapados en el Río pero Alan salió sin problemas, no logramos subir en una duna pero Alan retrocedió y estábamos arriba en el segundo intento, un camión perdió una de sus ruedas y quedó atrapado en la ruta, así que toco sacar el machete y abrir un paso lateral, cosa que hizo la miembro numero 3 del equipo de rescate con los miembros 1 y 2. Luego de dar agua a todo el mundo felizmente en la ruta diciéndonos a nosotros mismos lo peor ha pasado.
Two minutes later it became clear that there was no road, only vehicle traces. The scenery absolutely beautiful: sand, dunes, lagoons of water, a few donkeys and fewer cattle. The temperatura was 41o C, as was our anxiety. The route was highly demanding: we could have been stuck in one river, however we managed to extricate ourselves; we failed to ascend one dune, however we backed up and tried again by a slightly different access, successfully; a truck had lost a Wheel and was stuck in the track, so we all took out machetes and opened up a by-pass, with member 3 of the rescue team joining members 1 and 2. After handing out water to everyone, we were back on the road happily thinking that the worst was over.
Pero todo no había pasado. Entramos a un segmento de la ruta cuyas huellas en la arena eran my profundas, curvas y con la arena muy suelta. Quedamos atrapados en la arena dos veces, así que el equipo de rescate actuó con prontitud, gracias a nuestro kit de atascamientos y al carro de Raimundo todo función y pudimos llegar sin contratiempos a Barreirinhas, con un paseo por los paisajes de los Lençois incluido.
However we had seen all. We entered an area where the ruts in the sand were very deep, tortuous, and with very loose sand. We stuck twice, however the rescue team responded promptly; thanks to our towsling and Raimundo’s pickup all worked out, and we arrived without much loss of time in Barreririnhas, with a tour of the Lençois included.
En la estación de servicio volvimos a inflar los neumáticos, también encontramos un protector perdido, la falda posterior rota, las luces de reversa desconectaras, el filtro de aire lleno de arena y nuestro ser completo feliz con la travesía.
In the gas station we re-inflated the tyres, discovered that we had lost a guard below the car, broken the rear skirt, losing power to the reversing lights, had an air filter full of sand, and were completely happy with the journey.
Todo pasó como tenía que pasar, si no hubiéramos tenido todas las dificultades que tuvimos, no hubiéramos hecho contacto con Gordinho al momento en que él regresaba a nuestro destino y quizás hubiéramos gastado mucho de nuestro tiempo y energía, encontrando la vía y saliendo de nuestros atascos. Pero como todo paso como tenía que pasar pudimos conocer el ambiente de los Lençois íntimamente y sumarle una rica historia a nuestro viaje.
Everything turns out for the best. If we had not had the difficulties we experienced, we would not have met Gordinho when he was starting out on his return trip, and we would no doubt have spent a lot of time and energy finding the way and getting out of trouble. However since everything turns out for the best, we were able to get to know the Lençois intimately, and can tell a good tale.

The concept of loudspeaker trucks are quite fascinating to me.... it is unfortunate that the resulting sensory experience is unpleasant...
