São Luis

Nuestra visita a São Luis estaba movida por nuestro interés en los lugares más antiguos del país y sin duda este era uno de ellos, además de ser reconocida como patrimonio de la humanidad, y ser la primera ciudad fundada y habitada por los franceses resultaba para nosotros muy importante.

Our visit to São Luis was driven by our interest in the oldest places in the country, and without doubt this is one of them, the first and only city founded by the French in Brazil, in addition being known as a UNESCO World Heritage site, hence making the place important for us.

Llegamos en medio de los carnavales y aunque tranquilos, sirven de pretexto para el descanso de todo lo que nos impidió tener acceso a los museos de la ciudad y sentir la vibración normal de la ciudad.

We arrived during Carnaval, and while the city was tranquil, its need for rest served as the pretext for denying us access to the city’s museums.

El centro histórico se encuentra en proceso de recuperación y si bien es posible apreciar algunas edificaciones ya restauradas en general al momento de la visita teníamos una sensación de un país en Post guerra, quizás por los restos de las construcciones, la soledad de las calles y el abandono de otras tantas.

The historic centre is in process of restoration and while it is possible to see various restored buildings, in general the area gave us the impression of a city after a civil war. Perhaps resulting from the delapidation of many structures, the deserted streets, and the abandonment of many other buildings.

En São Luis el azulejo ha cumplido un papel importante en la decoración de las casas, desde épocas coloniales se utilizó para terminar las fachadas, dada la humedad del lugar. El azulejo está en la identidad y llamo nuestra atención que hasta los semáforos están cubiertos por una película plástica con azulejos impresos.

In São Luis ceramic tilling of the outside walls has been important in decorating the buildings, since colonial times they have been used to finish the facades, given the humidity and temperature. The ceramic tile is part of the identity of the place; our attention was captured by the fact that traffic lights are surrounded by plastic film on which are printed tiles.

La gastronomía Maranhese es distinguida, probamos varios platillos pero el arroz con frutos del mar fue el ganador, lastimosamente el número de restaurantes tradicionales y disponibles es esta época es limitado.

Maranhense gastronomy is distinguished; we tried various dishes however the Rice with Seafood was the winner. Unfortunately the number of restaurants maintaining tradicional cuisine is limited.

La gente es la ciudad es muy amable pero el premio se lo llevó el concesionario de Nissan. Buscamos el lugar para reparar lo roto y desconectado. Dos chicos trabajaron con nosotros, nos solo para hacer las reparaciones específicas necesarias, sino para encontrar una solución al protector desaparecido, que como esperábamos no tenían en el lugar. Después de hora y media, filtro limpio, falda reparada, zona del motor sin arena, luces funcionando y protector instalado. Fuimos a pagar la cuenta y la respuesta fue: Solo denle las gracias a los chicos y listo, no deben nada es cortesía de la casa.

The people of the city are all friendly, however the prize goes to the Nissan Dealer. We were seeking assistance to repair the various damages and reconnect the reversing lights. Two mechanics worked with us, not only to undertake the repairs needed, but also to seek a solution for the lost protector, which as expected was not available in their spares inventory. After an hour and a half, air filter cleaned, rear skirt repaired, engine bay cleaned, reversing lights working, and improvised protector in place. We went to pay the bill and the answer was: “Just thank the guys – it’s on the house”.

Contrario a esto el Holiday Inn se caracterizó por todo lo contrario, la ineficiencia de algunos de sus funcionarios y las fallas en las instalaciones hicieron que extrañáramos locamente los Ibis, que entregan lo que ofrecen por una excelente tarifa, que resulta impresionante tratándose de la costosa Brasil.

In contrast to this, the Holiday Inn was characterised by the opposite, the inefficiency of some of its employees and the failures in its facilities made us wish for the Ibis, which fulfils its promise at an excellent rate, which is impressive given the high costs in Brazil.

Aprovechamos nuestra estadía para ir a cine y desatrasarnos un poco en esta práctica ex - cotidiana. Les recomendamos Rango no la dejen de ver.

We took advantage of our stay to go the cinema and catch up on a previously frequent practice; we recommend “Rango”, do not miss it.
