New photos!!!! The lake route /La ruta alrededor de los lagos

We left Valdivia and headed southeast towards Lake Llanquihue, passing through countryside reminiscent of parts of Germany, in terms of the architecture of the farms, the forms of the fields, and the weather(!).

Salimos de Valdivia y nos dirigimos al sudeste hacia el Lago Llanquihue, que pasa a través un paisaje que recuerda partes de Alemania, en términos de la arquitectura de las granjas, las formas de los campos, y el tiempo (!).

We reached the lake at Puerto Octay, which was one of the early settlements in the German/Chilean colonization in the late 19^th century, and which retains many buildings from this period and the early 20^th century. We stopped for coffee and küchen in the Hotel Haase (1894), which still has some vertical walls, and then visited the Museum of the German Colonisation, where we were treated to a personal tour. Puerto Octay seems very much to retain its origins and was a worthwhile stop. We then headed south stopping for photos of Germanic (and wet) donkeys, and germanic farmhouses.

Llegamos a la laguna en Puerto Octay, que fue uno de los primeros asentamientos de la colonización alemana / chilena en finales del siglo 19 y que conserva muchos edificios de este período y de los principios del siglo 20. Nos detuvimos para tomar “café y küchen” en el Hotel Haase (18940, que aún tiene algunas paredes verticales y, a continuación visitamos el Museo de la Colonización Alemana, donde recibimos un recorrido personalizado. Puerto Octay parece conservar mjy bien sus orígenes y fue una parada valiosa. Luego nos dirigimos al sur, con escalas para fotos de burros germánicos (y húmedos), y casas rurales germánicas.

Next stop: Frutillar. This is another lakeside town, with evidence of more wealth than Puerto Octay, including an impressive new Theatre on the water.

Próxima parada: Frutillar. Esta es otra ciudad lacustre, con evidencia de más riqueza que la de Puerto Octay, incluyendo un impresionante teatro nuevo al lado del agua.

Then on to Puerto Varas, arriving on a rainy Sunday evening. We found a room in “The Guest House” which we subsequently discovered is one of the oldest houses in the town. The rooms are high and spacious, the breakfast extensive, and we enjoyed a good conversation with the owner, who also turned out to be the propietor of the Chocolateria in town, which offers a fine range of artesanal chocolate. Puerto Varas offered limited entertainment, at least on a rainy Sunday evening, however we dined on tasty salmon in “Donde el Gordito” and caught up on the blog.

Luego a Puerto Varas, llegando en una lluviosa tarde de domingo. Nosotros encontramos una habitación en "La casa de huéspedes" que posteriormente descubrimos es una de las casas más antiguas de la ciudad. Las habitaciones son altas y amplias, el desayuno extenso, y disfrutamos de un una buena conversación con la propietaria, quien también resultó ser duela de la Chocolatería de la ciudad, que ofrece una gama amplia de fino chocolate artesanal. Puerto Varas ofrece limitado entretenimiento, por lo menos en una lluviosa tarde de domingo, sin embargo cenamo salmón sabroso en "Donde el Gordito" y actualizamos el blog.

In the morning, the town was busier (not difficult) and after visiting the Chocolateria we headed off along the lakeside to Ensenada and then up the river to the Saltos de Petrohue (The Falls of Petrohue). The water is crystalline, the rocks volcanic black, the backdrop (which deigned to reveal the lower slopes of the Osorno volcano at least) is impressive. A beautiful place! We then continued up river to Lago Todo los Santos, where we walked on the black sand beach and enjoyed a light lunch before retracing our path to Puerto Varas and heading south through Puerto Montt to the ferry to Chiloe.

Por la mañana, la ciudad fue ocupada (no es difícil) y después de visitar la Chocolatería nos fuimos a lo largo de la orilla del lago a Ensenada y luego al laro del rio hasta los Saltos de Petrohué (El Cataratas del Petrohué). El agua es cristalina, las rocas volcánicas negras, el telón de fondo (que se dignó a revelar las laderas más bajas del volcán osorno por lo menos) es impresionante. Un hermoso lugar! A continuación, el río continúa hasta Lago De Todo los Santos, donde cruzamos la playa de arena negra y disfrutamos de un almuerzo ligero antes de volver a nuestro camino a Puerto Varas y en dirección sur a través de Puerto Montt hasta el ferry hacia Chiloé.

In summary: Puerto Octay – most original in terms of its history; Frutillar – most wealthy; Puerto Varas – most touristy (a sort of “Whistler on the lake”); the lakeside – pleasant views, with an alleged backdrop of volcanoes (not seen other than the lower slopes of one volcano briefly from the falls).

En resumen: Puerto Octay - más original en cuanto a su historia, Frutillar - más ricos, Puerto Varas - más turística (Una especie de "Whistler en el lago"); a orillas del lago - plancenteros paisajes con los supuestos volcanes como telón de fondo.
