Iniciamos nuestro día apreciando el estero del Paraná, kilómetros y kilómetros de pastos, pantanos, ríos y suponemos otras formas de aguas, haciendo el paisaje una gran tentación: queríamos salir del carro y entrar al corazón del lugar, sin embargo logramos apreciar algunas aves desde la vía y disfrutar su presencia.
Luego entre lluvias nos dirigimos hacia la frontera, un puesto integrado en Uruguay, después del puente hizo fáciles los trámites. Descubrimos el nombre oficial de Uruguay: República Oriental de Uruguay y algo comenzó a verse diferente.Then, passing through rainshowers, we arrived at the border, an integrated post with Uruguay, where the procedures are handled on the east side of the bridge. We discovered that the official name of Uruguay is the Eastern Republic of Uruguay, and so started the next chapter.
Primer destino Mercedes, un lugar tranquilo y armónico, limpio, con buena infraestructura vial, algunas calles empedradas y construcciones bien conservadas. Cuenta con una Rambla junto al río que permita a todos apreciar la belleza del Rio Negro y disfrutar sus aguas.
First stop Mercedes, a tranquil and harmonious place, clean and with good road infrastructure, a few cobbled streets and well conserved buildings. There is an esplanade which allows enjoyment of the river.
Discubrimos Villa Soriano, la ruta a Villa Soriano es rica en aves, grupos y grupos de palomas están en la vía listas para salir volando cuando el carro se aproxima, con ellas otras aves hacen su presencia y es una tentación parar cada vez que una aparece. El lugar el pequeño, lleno de arboles, con algunas edificaciones antiguas incluyendo la iglesia que dejan ver la arquitectura del lugar, calles entre asfalto y tierra y no mucho más que ver un domingo en la tarde.
We explored Villa Soriano, the road to which is rich in birdlife, many flocks of dove on the road, ready to take flight on the approach of the car, many other birds visible, tempting us to stop at every opportunity. The village is small, full of trees, with various old buildings including the church which allowed us to see the architecture of the village, streets of asphalt and sand, with not much to do on a Sunday afternoon.
Carmelo, un lugar a la rivera del rio, con un puerto rico de apreciar Calles y andenes empedrados junto con arboles frondosos construyen un paisaje refrescante.
Carmelo, a place on the banks of the river, with an attractive harbour and cobbled streets and sidewalks lined with trees setting a refreshing scene.
Destino final Colonia del Sacramento, un lugar delicioso. Este sitio históricamente fue ocupado por Portugueses, Ingleses y Españoles y cambió de ocupador 14 veces. La ciudad antigua mantiene los estilos constructivos portugueses y españoles en sus casas, las calles son un misterio y aunque algunas ya estaban empedradas al principio del siglo XX, muchas fueron empedradas en las labores de recuperación.
Destination at the end of day, Colonia del Sacramento, a delicious place. THis historic site was occupied by Portuguese, British, and Spanish and changed hands 14 times. The old city retains Portuguese amd Spanish construction techniques in its buildings; the streets are a mystery and although many were cobbled in the early 20th century, many have been cobbled during recent restoration.
El ambiente construido en la ciudad antigua hoy, es una invitación a caminar lento, a dejar que los sentidos se deleiten en el ambiente general y en los detalles que hacen la diferencia. Con el viento, las ramas de los árboles producen un sonido tranquilo y la frescura del aire es una buena caricia.
The old city today is an invitation to stroll, let ones senses delight in the general ambience and in the details which make a difference. The leaves of the trees whisper in the breeze and the fresh air is a caress.
Pasamos un día entre museos y en el Archivo Regional Histórico de la ciudad, la riqueza de los primeros radica más que en sus muestras, en la oportunidad de observar los detalles de casas originales en su interior. El placer del Archivo fue compartir con Erica la revisión del material fotográfico y encontrar allí además de evidencias útiles a nuestros propósitos, material bibliográfico de referencia.
We spent a day between the museums and the Regional Historic Archive: the former offering more than their exhibits in the opportunity to see the construction of the old buildings in which they are housed; in the latter we spent some time with Erica reviewing the photographic material archived, in which we discovered more information valuable for our studies, photographs and reference texts.

PD. Una de las grandes diferencias que se perciben en el ambiente es la calma de los conductores Uruguayos, todos respetan la velocidad indicada, no superan los 90 km por hora haciendo de la ruta una experiencia francamente lenta. También es sorprendente el número de carros antiguos que se encuentran en las ciudades y en la ruta.
PS. One of the major differences which we found was the calmness of Uruguayan drivers, all respecting the speed limits. Travelling the route at no more than 90 Km/h was frankly a slow experience. It was also surprising to see the number of old vehicles on the roads and in the streets.
So was there once a Western Republic of Uruguay?
