Florianópolis (with emphasis on the "opolis") / con mucha POLIS

La visita a Florianópolis, estuvo antecedida por la peor experiencia en Ruta vivida durante el viaje. Recorrimos 500 Km de sur a norte, por una vía en ampliación, con límites de velocidad muy limitados, logrando la mayor concentración de conductores agresivos, dispuestos a muchas cosas, lo que significó que cada entrega de las llaves fuera un placer y que tuviéramos que discutir a profundidad nuestras estrategias para hacernos el viaje seguro y menos desgastante. Antes de viaje habíamos tenido noticias de la muerte de un turista en una zona de la ciudad, lo que nos alertaba sobre la situación general e incrementaba nuestra tensión.

Our journey to Florianópolis was the worst driving experience of our trip to date. We covered 500 Km from south to north, on a road in construction, with very low speed limits and very frequent "revenue generation", encountering the highest driver aggression quotient so far. This made every driver handover a pleasure for the person handing over the keys, and resulted in a lot of discussion on our strategy for reducing risk and exhaustion. Prior to the journey we had seen news of a tourist killed on arrival in the city and this elevated our tension for obvious reasons.

Floripa, término utilizado por la población para referirse a la ciudad, tiene un segmento continental y otro insular. En el insular se encuentran los poblados antiguos y en el continental la zona industrial.

Floripa, so called by its citizens, has a mainland part and an island part. In the insular part are the old parts of the city, and on the mainland is the industrial centre.

Llegamos al centro de la ciudad y nos encontramos con varias cosas ricas, de un lado algunas edificaciones antiguas pero muchas calles aún cubiertas con piedra rectangular. Varias expresiones culturales ricas de experimentar: hombres jugando dominó, cartas y ajedrez, jóvenes practicando Capoeria, una feria de productos artesanales en donde encontramos Aracajé, un pastel hecho con harina de Frijol absolutamente delicioso. El mercado es otro lugar pintoresco y muy frecuentado, las personas salen del trabajo y se concentran allí para disfruta el ambiente, las calles se desocupan y el mercado comienza a latir.

We arrived in the centre and found many enjoyable aspects: on one side many old buildings, however streets now covered with rectangular blocks; men playing dominos, cards, and chess; young people practising "capoeira"; an artesan fair in the Plaza where we found "Aracajé", a pastel made from bean flour, absolutely delicious. The market is picturesque and jammed with people enjoying themselves after work, the offices empty as the market's heart begins to beat.

Visitamos el museo de historia, y además de encontrar un palacio bien cuidado, en su jardín han montado una exposición de cerámica muy buena y divertida: al recorrerlo se encuentran esculturas, formas y montajes ricos de observar y poco obvios a las miradas rápidas. (En la foto el Mercado!)

We visited the history museum, and in addition to finding it housed in a well-preserved palace, discovered that the garden is the site of an excellent and amusing ceramics exhibition, with many innovative forms of ceramics, not often immediately obvious to a quick glance (the photo is of the market).

Floripa esta reconocido como uno de los destinos favoritos de los Brasileros por la riqueza natural y de sus playas, así que decidimos ir a conocer la isla en las diferentes secciones. Nos dirigimos hacia el Suroeste para visitar un poblado antiguo de influencia portuguesa, Ribeirão da Ilha , cuya dinámicas es agradable no hay mucha gente y está bien cuidado, sus calles se pueden transitar y hay varios sitios para disfrutar la gastronomía local.

Floripa is known as one of the favourite holiday destinations for Brazilians seeking nature and beaches, so we decided to tour the island to visit its attractions. We headed southwest to visit a historic village retaining its Portuguese heritage, Ribeirão da Ilha, which proved to be a pleasant stop. It is well maintained and has relatively few people in the streets, allowing one to walk through the village and enjoy various gastronomic options.

Luego nos dirigimos al Este y luego hacia el norte y descubrimos la naturaleza humana del lugar, las vías, las playas y los pequeños poblados están invadidos por personas y carros, las estrechas vías se comparten por todos y como siempre muchos conductores están compitiendo por llegar primero, así que el disfrute de la riqueza natural fue imposible para nosotros, para tomar la foto nos tocó poner el carro casi dentro del río. Lastimosamente el tráfico impidió que exploramos el noroeste de la isla con otros sitios coloniales que eran de nuestro interés.

Later we headed to the east coast of the island, then northwards, discovering the human wildlife in the area; the roads, beaches, and villages are invaded by people and cars. The narrow ways are shared by all, and given that many drivers are seeking to pass everyone else at all costs, we found it impossible to enjoy the natural attractions of these parts of the island. To take the photograph we had to put the car more or less into the river. Sadly the heavy traffic meant that we were unable to explore the northern part of the island where there were other colonial sites of interest.
