A necessary destination outside the plan / Un destino fuera del plan cuya visita era necesaria.

Antes de Navidad, decidimos visitar las Ruinas Jesuíticas Guaraníes del sur este de Paraguay. La ruta 1 era la seleccionada y teníamos cuatro lugares por visitar. Comenzamos el día con la ansiedad de los posibles encuentros con la Policía, pero a diferencia de los sucedido en asunción, en esta ruta todos los encuentros fueron amables y positivos.

Before Christmas we decided to visit the ruins of the Jesuit/Guaraní missions in the south east of Paraguay. Route 1 was selected to give us four sites to visit. We started the day with some concern regarding possible interactions with the police, however all our encounters were friendly and positive.

Nuestra primera parada Yaguarón, visitaríamos la iglesia del este lugar que fue construida por Franciscanos y Guaraníes a comienzos del siglo XVII. La Iglesia se conserva intacta y su decoración interior es sorprendente, techo y paredes con tallas en madera o pinturas a mano. Si bien mis recuerdo de esta iglesia eran muy diferentes, visitarla nos permitió apreciar otros detalles similares a los observados en Córdoba.

At our first stop, Yaguarón, we visited the church which was built by Franciscans and Guaraníes in the early 17th century. The church is intact and retains its original, surprising, decoration: ceiling and walls in worked wood and handpainted murals. If Marce's recollection of the church was somewhat different, nonetheless it allowed us to see details similar to those seen in Córdoba.

Seguimos hacia la reducción jesuítica de San Cosme y Damian. Un templo conservado, aún en uso y un alto nivel de preservación de la estructura de la reducción nos permitió comprender la forma de operación de estos pueblos y detalles de la forma constructiva utilizada.

We continued to the Jesuit Reduction of San Cosme y Damian. A preserved temple, still in use, and a high level of preservation of the reduction, which allowed us to understand the way in which these sites operated, and the forms of construction employed.

Al final del día visitamos la Reducción de Jesus de de Tavarangüe, el último pueblo en construcción, cuyo templo no fue terminado por la expulsión de los Jesuitas. La visita nos permitió entender la grandeza de la construcción y sus formas básicas, también apreciar mejora las relaciones entre Guaranies y Jesuitas y también otros detalles de la vida de la región.

At the end of the day we visited the reduction at Jesus de de Tavarangüe, the last to be built, whose temple had not been completed when the Jesuits were expelled. The visit gave us insight into the grandeur of the construction and its basic elements, as well as providing insight into the relationship between Jesuits and Guaraníes as well as other aspects of life in the area.

Tuvimos el placer de probar el Tereré en casa de nuestro guía en compañía de su padre. El tereré es en esencia una bebida fria y refrescante elaborada a base de yerba mate y muy popular en Paraguay, después de probarla y disfrutar sus efectos es comprensible el uso masivo en el país.

We had the pleasure of trying Tereré in the home of our guide and his father. The Tereré is essentially a cool and refreshing drink based on yerba mate and which is highly popular in Paraguay; once having tried it we could understand its massive popularity.

Pasamos la noche en Encarnación, un lugar tranquilo y amable. Cenamos en Hiroshima, un restaurante Japonés, que nos permitió un respiro en la tan frecuente carne al sur del continente.

We spent the night in Encarnación, a quiet and friendly place. We ate at Hiroshima, a Japanese restaurant, which allowed us a pleasant break from the routine of steak in the south of the continent.

Terminamos nuestra visita por estas tierras con un recorrido de las Ruinas de la reducción de Trinidad. Un muy buen ejemplo de la capacidad de los guaraníes para tallar la piedra. Se encuentran hermosas representaciones de diversas figuras adornando el templo y otros sectores del pueblo.

We ended our visit to these lands with a tour of the ruined reduction at Trinidad. An excellent demonstration of the stoneworking ability of the Guaraníes. There are beautiful representations of different figures adorning the temple and other parts of the reduction.

Comenzando la tarde regresamos a Argentina para pasar la navidad, con la firme intención de escribir a todos y desearles felices fiestas, pero no había internet disponible y no nos quedó otra que pensar en ustedes y dedicarnos a gozar.

In the early afternoon we returned to Argentina for Christmas, with the intention of writing to everyone to wish festive greetings, however we had no internet access and so were able to do not more than think of everyone and enjoy ourselves.

PS/ Paraguay has the largest proportion of cobbled roads and streets of all the countries we have visited on this strip, almost all of which have been cobbled very recently.
