Rio de Janeiro, la reinvención / reinvented

La visita a Rio era la última parada larga en la ruta hacia el norte, así que además de la ansiedad que genera cada sitio antes de explorarlo juntos, estaba de por medio la necesidad de descansar un poco y poner en orden las diferentes cosas de la vida que pulsan imparablemente.

Nuestra entrada a Rio fue larga, el trafico en la hora pico es lento y el trancón inevitable, pero vivirlo permitió experimentar esa otra ciudad que habitualmente está lejana al turismo y que solo se puede oler por accidente. Por esta ruta se observa una ciudad más dura, más exigente, más llena de gente, con más personas esperando el bus y viviendo en edificaciones que invaden la montaña y ocupan el terreno hasta el horizonte.

The visit to Rio was the last major stop on our way north, and so in addition to holding our breath awaiting our exploration of every stop, in this case we were also expecting to take a rest and also to handle those unavoidable tasks of everyday life. Our entry into Rio was slow, the peak hour traffic resulting in the inevitable jam, however this allowed us to experience the "other" Rio which is not part of the tourist destination and which one normally senses only be chance. On the highway into the city one sees a harder city, more demanding, with more people, waiting for buses, living in houses which climb the mountains and fill every part of the terrain.

Nuestra base de operaciones fue Ipanema, la misma utilizada por Alan en todos sus viajes anteriores, un lugar para él conocido y apreciado y lugar para recrear juntos. Estando allí es claro que no se está conociendo Rio, pero esto es un asunto inevitable si quieres disfrutar la estadía con más calma y goce y si quieres gozar con frecuencia (como en nuestro caso) las delicias de Esplanada Grill.

Our operations base was Ipanema, as frequented by Alan in his prior visits, a place known and to be enjoyed by both of us. Staying in Ipanema is clearly not staying in Rio, however it is a good option if you wish to enjoy the experience in some tranquillity and also if you wish frequently (as in our case) to enjoy the delights of Esplanada Grill.

Uno de los grandes atractivos de la ciudad es su paisaje, especialmente el de la parte más cerca al mar. Ver la forma en que se han habitado sus tierras entre cerros y rocas, con reservas forestales de fondo y varias islas mar adentro resulta un espectáculo precioso con sol o sin sol, con manadas o sin manadas. Los paseos turísticos clásicos son buenas oportunidades para apreciar la ciudad "visible", pero las manadas en estos lugares son imposibles de evitar, sin embargo observarlas sigue siendo una actividad divertida.

One of the great attractions of the city is its scenery, especially the areas near the sea. The city occupies the spaces between granite domes and mountain ridges, in between various bays, with islands offshore, and thick forest climbing the less steep slopes, creating a spectacular landscape whether or not is is sunny. The classic tourist attractions are good opportunities to view the "visible" face of the city, however it is impossible to avoid crowds, nevertheless these provide an alternative spectacle.

Lagoa es otra delicia, especialmente cuando las playas están ocupadas y caminar al lado del mar puede ser tormentoso, entonces disfrutar de este cuerpo de agua y del esfuerzo de caminar estos kilómetros bajo los rayos del sol y con la esperanza de un jugo de Açaí resulta atractivo.

The "lagoa" (lake behind Ipanema and Leblon) is another delight, especially when the beaches are jammed and walking by the beach is impossible; enjoying the body of water and walking around its perimeter under the sun anticipating an açaí juice is wonderful.

Visitamos el centro de la ciudad entre semana y el fin de semana. Entre semana el espíritu es ferviente, personas vienen y van ocupando las calles y disfrutando las tiendas y demás establecimientos. Visitamos la biblioteca nacional, gozamos el archivo fotográfico disponible y todos los trámites y conversaciones para obtener las fotos que alimentan nuestra investigación, incluyendo la visita al banco. En el fin de semana, otro espíritu habita el centro de la ciudad, las tiendas y establecimientos están cerrados, las calles no cuentan con los trabajadores y otros son los que habitan el espacio, la imagen de personas durmiendo en el suelo, ropas colgadas cerca de las fuentes de agua y niños pequeños caminando sin adultos cerca en estado de atenderlos componen las escenas predominantes. En adición algunos ladrones buscando los dos turistas del día que eligen ir al centro un domingo, se hacen presentes para subir tus niveles de adrenalina y ensayar los gritos del día: Ayúdennos nos quieren robar. Gracias a esta experiencia, utilizamos la red de buses intermunicipales, y bajo la tutela de los conductores fuimos a Niteroi a conocer el museo de arte contemporáneo.

We visited the centre of the city during the week and also on the weekend. In the week the spirit is febrile, people coming and going in the streets, busily occupying the stores and cafes. We visited the National Library, enjoyed the photographic archive and all of the procedures and tasks necessary to obtain photos in support of our investigation, including our visit to the bank. On the weekend a different spirit occupies the centre, stores and other establishments are closed, the streets are no longer the domain of those working downtown, others now inhabit the space, sleeping on the streets, clothes drying by the fountains, solitary children passing by. In addition robbers seeking those two tourists who have elected to pass through the centre on a Sunday, their actions prompting a surge in adrenaline, rapid exit stage left, and shouts for assistance “help, they are trying to rob us!”. Thanks to their influence, we gained experience of the intermunicipal bus network and under the tutelage of the conductors used them to travel to Niteroi and visit the MAC (Museum of Contemporary Art).

Por cierto, en lo relativo a los museos de arte tuvimos experiencias singulares. De un lado siempre rico ver lo que esta pasando, nuevos artistas, nuevas manifestaciones y nuevas dimensiones de la realidad emergiendo a la conciencia. De otro lado con mucha frecuencia estamos comentando algo así como: creo que mi cerebro no esta listo para comprender o para conectar estéticamente con estas manifestaciones y luego una rica risotada de complicidad indica el tiempo para un buen café. Esto nos paso en los museos moderno y contemporáneo y sus exhibiciones temporales, no así en el museo de bellas artes con una colección de arte contemporáneo muy amplia. También, visitamos la Fundación Moreira Salles, allí encontramos una exhibición de un fotógrafo ruso, que desencadenó mucha curiosidad por la Rusia de los 20's, un nuevo tema para estudiar. Allí las instalaciones son deliciosas, el entorno natural bien cuidado y la librería consumió mucho de nuestro tiempo revisando las publicaciones y el archivo fotográfico.

To be sure, with respect to the art museums we had singular experiences. On one hand it is always worthwhile to see what is going on, new artists, new artforms, and new awareness of reality emerging. On the other hand, we find ourselves frequently saying something like “I think that my consciousness is not yet ready to understand or to connect aesthetically with these manifestations” followed by a laugh of complicity and a pause for a good coffee. This arose in our explorations of the MAC and MAM and their temporary exhibitions, however not in the Museum of Fine Arts and its wide modern collection. We also visited the Fundación Moreira Salles, there encountering an exhibition of Russian photography, which opened much curiosity about Russia in the 1920s, a new theme for study. At the Fundación the exhibits are well presented, the ambience positive, and the bookshop took up considerable time looking at its books and photographic archive.

Otra cara de la ciudad esta reflejada en sus playas. Ellas ocupan un lugar protagónico en la identidad. La playa es fundamental en todas las formas de relación entra los individuos y el grupo. Desde muy temprano las playas comienzan a llenarse y no se desocupan hasta la noche. En el fin de semana, el metro se llena en sentido Ipanema y todas las personas salen en traje de baño, con sus sillas, esteras y demás accesorios para disfrutar el sol del día. Las carpas rojas de las sombrillas van reemplazando en amarillo brillante de la arena, que solo puede percibirse si caminas al rededor y observas los juegos que están ocurriendo: futbol de arena, voley en la arena, tenis en arena y otras variaciones. Antes estos espectáculos del cuerpo, el paisaje y la destreza no hay más que sentarte en una silla playera, tomar agua de coco y localizar la primera venta de maíz, para comerte una mazorca con mantequilla y sal, al mejor estilo de Rio.

Another face of the city is revealed on its beaches. These occupy a key role in the city’s identity. The beach is fundamental in its interactions with individuals and groups. The beaches start to fill early and are still occupied at night. At the weekend the metro fills with people in bathing suits on their way to Ipanema, with their chairs, coolers, and other items needed to enjoy the day on the beach. The red beach parasols replace the yellow sand, which can then only be seen if one approaches closely to observe what is going on: beach football, beach volleyball, beach tennis, and other distractions. In the presence of the spectacles of bodies, scenery, and skills, there is little to do other than sit on your beach chair, drink coconut milk, and locate the nearest seller of corn on the cob to eat with butter and salt, in the best Rio style.

Uno de los más ricos descubrimientos allí fue el Museo Nacional de Historia, una edificación de principios del siglo XVIII, de influencia portuguesa, construido en tres bloques, que presenta de manera precisa y enriquecida la historia del país, ver los pabellones, disfrutar la colecciones e integrar en el tiempo los diferentes eventos relacionados con la construcción de esta nación fue constructivo. Adicionalmente, tiene colección de carruajes, y también arte contemporáneo, haciendo de la historia un fenómeno vivo en construcción para el visitante.

One of the richest discoveries was the National History Museum, in an early 18th century building with Portuguese influences, built in three blocks, and which presents the history of Brazil in a precise and enriched manner. It was very constructive to pass through the museum, enjoying the collection, and integrating our understanding of the development of the country. In addition, there are collections of carriages, of contemporary art, and of cannons, providing a rich experience for the visitor.

La música siempre presente fue posible en nuestra visita, fuimos a escuchar y re-conocer a Maria Creuza, su energía vibrante y deliciosa, su voz más cansada pero viva y su desparpajo inigualable.

Music was always present during our visit, we went to hear and re-encounter Maria Creuza, her energy vibrant and delicious, her voice more tired however lively, and her style genuine.

Rio también fue una buena oportunidad para los encuentros, tener el honor del encuentro con la gente que ha acompañado nuestra existencia, ser testigos de su presente y apreciar su ser, es siempre una delicia para repetir y una muy buena oportunidad para seguirnos mirando y recreando en los seres sociales que somos.

Rio was also an opportunity for meetings, with the honour of meeting people who have accompanied our existence, seeing them in the present, and appreciating their being; it is always a delight to meet and a good opportunity to see ourselves and enjoy ourselves in the social beings we are.

Paraty: a return ticket / ...tiene ruta de regreso

Tomamos de nuevo la ruta hacia la costa, Paraty era nuestro destino con una parada en Sâo Luis do Paraitinga una ciudad colonial del siglo 18.

Once again we took the road to the coast, Paraty our destination, with a stop in Sâo Luis do Paraitinga, an 18th century colonial city.

Llegamos al lugar sin mayor conciencia sobre su existencia y nos recibió una ciudad pintoresca, con casas donde era posible reconocer la tradición portuguesa y calles con las mismas evidencias. Tambien encontramos las ruinas de la iglesia matriz y muchas casas en proceso de restauración lo que despertó nuestra necesidad de indagación.

We arrived at the latter with little awareness more than its existence and found a picturesque town with houses in which it was possible to see the Portuguese tradition and streets with the same evidence. We also found the church in ruins and many houses in process of restoration which awoke our spirit of enquiry.

Comenzamos por saciar el hambre con empanadas de mandioca y carne y jugo de Cajú, luego recorrimos el lugar hasta llegar a la fuente más confiable de información: la agencia de restauración solidaria del lugar. La historia indica que hace un año, como resultado de las lluvias, el río creció 10 metros e inundó el centro de la ciudad, tal como se ve en la foto. (Esta foto fue tomada por Jerry Rodríguez, un agente de transito de la ciudad que documentó el hecho, sus fotos están exhibidas en el mercado de la ciudad) La Iglesia tan antigua como la ciudad, y varias casas se destruyeron. Llevan un año trabajando en la restauración, dado que la mayoría de las estructuras se conservaron en pie, pero los daños interiores son grandes.

First we satiated our hunger with meat and manioc empanadas and with cajú juice, then walked through the town seeking information, coming upon the office of the Restoration Agency, which appeared to be a good source. Apparently a year ago, as a result of the heavy rains, the river rose, inundating the town to a height of 10m above normal, as can be seen in the photo (taken by Jerry Rodriguez, an officer in the town, who documented the flood. His photos were on display in the Market). The church, as old as the city, and many houses, were destroyed. During the following year, restoration has been underway, with many houses now standing, however with extensive internal damage.

Las zonas más altas de la ciudad se conservan intactas y tienen calles empedradas con un estilo particular.

The upper parts of the town have remained intact and have cobbled streets with a distinct style.

De nuevo hacia el este y encontramos otras vez la serra, cruzarla en medio de la lluvia y al final de la tarde nos permitió ver otra cara de la mata atlántica y la belleza del mar desde lo alto. Luego de una hora por la ruta BR101, llegamos a Paraty.

Once again en route east we reached the Serra, crossing in the midst of rain in the late afternoon, and seeing another face of the Mata Atlantica and the beauty of the ocean from the heights. Then, after an hour on BR101 we arrived in Paraty.

Esta es una ciudad hermosa en si misma, su casco histórico está lleno de casas de paredes blancas, ventanas de colores, balcones singulares y hermosas calles empedradas. Cada calle es un placer, en posible encontrar tiendas, restaurantes y cafés abiertos hasta la noche y seguir caminando y deleitándose en los detalles. El puerto al final de la tarde se llena de embarcaciones pequeñas y de colores, que contrastan con la oscuridad del mar.

This is an attractive city, its historic centre full of white-walled houses, coloured windows, unusual balconies, and beautiful cobbled streets. Every street is a pleasure, it is possible to find stores, restaurants, and cafes open into the evening, and to enjoy the streets until late delighting in their details. At the end of the day the port is full of boats loading and unloading, contrasting with the dark water.

Los museos tienen instalaciones ricas de conocer y exhibiciones por madurar, pero la ciudad cuenta con varias galerías privadas y talleres de artistas que permiten saciar las curiosidades artísticas.

The museums have good sites and exhibitions in need of maturation, however the town has many private galleries and workshops in which one can satiate one's artistic curiosity.

Al salir de la ciudad, visitamos el camino de ouro, un camino colonial que conectaba a Minas Gerais con el mar y que se utilizó para sacar el Oro hacia Europa en el siglo XVIII. Su ambiente y su estado fueron una deliciosa y caliente sorpresa.

Outside the city we visited the "Caminho do Ouro" (gold highway) which in colonial times connected Minas Gerais with the sea and was used for the export of gold to Europe in the 18th century. Its environment and condition was a delicious (and hot) surprise.

Paraty es un sitio para regresar, requiere más tiempo para el ocio y el placer... también para recrear la historia.

Paraty is a place to which to return, needing more time for leisure and pleasure... and to recreate history.

Campos do Jordâo: a place to reflect on authenticity / un lugar para reflexionar sobre la autenticidad

Varias veces escuchamos referencias sobre este sitio y en todas ellas se hacía perentoria su visita, por esto lo incluimos dentro de nuestra ruta. Sin embargo al iniciar el día con la conciencia de otros lugares descritos de manera similar teníamos dudas sobre la riqueza de este sitio y nos preparamos para un encuentro peculiar.

We had heard various references to this place and all of them had dictated that we visit, so we included it in our itinerary. Notwithstanding, when on the way, the similarity of the situation to others we had experienced led us to have doubts on the delights of the destination, and we were prepared for a peculiar encounter.

Campos do Jordão es reconocida por ser la ciudad más alta de Brasil, 1720 msnm, lo que hace que sea todo un espectáculo para la mayoría de personas que lo habitan. En ascenso al lugar es lindo, verde y permite apreciar algunos paisajes bellos como es valle de la foto.

Campos do Jordão is known as the highest town in Brazil, at 1720m MSL, which makes it important in the eyes of most of its inhabitants. The ascent is attractive, green, and allows appreciation of landscape as seen in the photo.

Una vez llegamos allí confirmamos la peculiaridad del asunto: El lugar es llamado la “Suiza de Brasil” y esto es quizás por la mezcla de una arquitectura imitativa específica, una topografía menos plana, muchas ventas de chocolate (suizo brasilero) y un episodio de nieve que al parecer la ciudad aún no olvida. Esto se acompaña de algunas cervezas regionales, muchas tiendas de sacos no muy atractivos, comida italiana y una que otra tradición alemana.

Once in the town we confirmed the peculiarity of its description: it is known as the Switzerland of Brazil, because of a mix of imitative architecture, less flat topography, lots of chocolate stores (Swiss Brazilian), and an experience of snow which it appears the town will never allow to be forgotten. These are accompanied with various regional beers, many stores selling unattractive sweaters, and restaurants with Italian or German cuisine.

La ciudad es chistosa, que opinan ustedes de este restaurante que tiene como entrada las fauces de un cocodrilo o esta venta de chocolates que utiliza la imagen de un niño mirando a través del vidrio como una forma de indicar la delicia de lo que vende? Así que no es de extrañar un carro de la Barbie en el parque principal para pasear a los niños, o todo tipo de recuerdos mal hechos sobre la ciudad, como tampoco muchas agencias de bienes raíces vendiendo casas a precios realmente locos y si que menos los enanos de barro en la entrada de la posada... en este lugar todo es posible.

The town is curious, what do you think of this restaurant whose entrance is a crocodile's jaws, or the chocolate store using a model of a child viewing its wares through the window to advertise its delights? It was no particular surprise to find a Barbie Car in the park to carry children, as well as all kinds of poorly made souvenirs, multiple real estate agencies selling (one assumes) houses at prices which are crazy, and ceramic dwarfs at the Pousada entrance... in this place anything is possible.

Al parecer la riqueza del lugar está en su entorno natural, entonces todo tipo de actividades de montaña están ofrecidas por agencias turísticas para pasar el tiempo, como no las visitamos no tenemos mucho que decir, sin embargo fue posible capturar algunas fotos de aves del lugar.

It seems that the richness of the place is really its natural setting, hence all kinds of mountain activities are available. SInce we did not take advantage of any of these we can't say much, however we did find it possible to take some photos of the local birdlife.

Luego de una noche rica salimos de allí, riéndonos de la misión cumplida y deseosos de un destino más alineado con nuestros intereses.

After a pleasurable night we left, laughing about our completed mission, and seeking a destination better aligned with our interests.

Sao Paulo, the little big delight / una pequeña gran delicia

Después de disponer todos los objetos en su sitio y en ese momento en que por fin te das permiso de respirar profundo y cuantas veces quieras nos aproximamos a la ventana, observamos hasta el horizonte en todas las direcciones y lo único y que surgió de nuestras bocas fue: ¡Mierda esto es grande! Edificios en todas las direcciones hasta el horizonte constituyen el paisaje principal de la ciudad: 20500000 habitantes en el censo del 2010 es la cifra de población de referencia y inevitablemente se nota, pero a pesar de ello y de la publicidad que advierte sobre la seguridad y el cuidado, Sao Paulo es un lugar rico de conocer, siendo inevitable la conciencia de saber que estas mirando solo un pedacito de la realidad.

After having organised our stuff and finally having an opportunity to breathe, we took the opportunity to take a look out of the window. We looked in all directions to the horizon and the only response which occurred to us was “Shit, this is huge!¨. Skyscrapers and tall apartment blocks in every direction as far as one could see, the primary element in the scenery. The population recorded in the 2010 census is 20,500,000 inhabitants, which is entirely evident. Despite this huge population, and the scary publicity regarding crime and safety, we found Sao Paulo a rewarding place to visit, recognising that we have seen only a limited slice of the city.

Todos los museos que visitamos son valiosos, el museo de los inmigrantes japoneses además de ser una buena oportunidad para conocer esta parte de la historia, esta bien relatado, ambientado y protegido, además volteando a la izquierda por la esquina más próxima el ambiente Nipon - Brasilero se hace presente y es posible disfrutar comida japonesa deliciosa.

All of the museums we visited were worthwhile; the Museum of Japanese Immigration gave us a good opportunity to learn about this phase of Brazilian history, well told and curated, anda round the corner one finds oneself in the Nippo-Brazilian quarter, where one can enjoy excellent Japanese food.

El museo Afrobrasilero, es de gran valor histórico y artístico, en él se pueden apreciar en toda su extensión, las manifestaciones culturales del pueblo brasilero desde la perspectivas de sus raíces negras, que son admirablemente extensas y ricas en manifestaciones. Adicionalmente, se recrea la historia de las poblaciones con raíces africanas en Brasil, desde la esclavitud, hasta el presente pasando por la inevitable exclusión que seguramente coexiste con otras formas de integración social.

The Afro-Brazilian Museum is a rich collection of great value historically and artistically, in which one can appreciate the many cultural manifestations in Brazil resulting from its African roots. The presentation of the history of the huge Afro-Brazilan population is excellent, giving insight from slavery to the present, with consciousness of the exclusionary attitudes and realities which accompanied the process of liberation.

Los museos de arte tienen colecciones y exhibiciones temporales variadas y bien presentadas, especialmente en lo relativo a las colecciones permanentes. Si bien no pudimos visitar el museo de arte moderno por cambio en la colección, la tienda estaba abierta y su colección rica de curiosear.

The art museums have temporary exhibitions which are varied and well-presented, particularly compared with the permanent collections. While we were unable to visit the Museum of Modern Art, which was closed for preparation of a new exhibition, the Museum Shop was open and afforded a snapshot of the museum.

En nuestro recorrido por la historia, el Patio del Colegio sació nuestro interés. Corresponde al corazón de Sao Paulo, en donde se construyó la primera Iglesia por parte de un sacerdote Jesuita que se dedicó a evangelizar y educar en la región. Las construcciones fueron recuperadas y habilitadas como centro cultural y la iglesia se conserva con toda su simplicidad.

In our historical circuit, the patio of the Jesuit College satisfied our interests.

La música tuvo su espacio para nosotros en este viaje, después de intentar escuchar algo en un bar de barrio y descubrir que la música es sólo un adorno más del lugar y en consecuencia solo es posible defenderse de todos los culos que eligen pararse alrededor de tu pequeña mesa, encontramos un concierto de Fafa de Belém una representantes histórica de la MPB, cuando llegamos y estimamos la edad promedio de la audiencia comprendimos que quizá era una representante pre histórica y efectivamente lo comprobamos. Durante el concierto, que desafortunadamente coincidió con una disfonía que afectó dramáticamente su desempeño, la música y el público fueron de nuestro disfrute.

Music occupied some space in the visit; after trying to listen to music in a local bar and discovering the music was simply part of the furniture and that the bar was so popular that we had to defend ourselves from the multiple bums (so to speak) parking themselves around our table, we discovered a concert: Fafá de Belém, an important part of the history of MPB. When we arrived and noted the average age of the audience we found that she is really a part of the pre-history of MPB. During the concert we found that her voice now suffered from a disphony which dramatically affected her performance, however the music and the public were enjoyable.

Paseando alrededor de los placeres de la boca, fuimos a comer Feijoada. Bolinho fue el lugar seleccionado por ser reconocido como el mejor lugar para este plato en Sao Paulo y en este caso las masas no se equivocaron. Disfrutamos la tradición, comimos con gula y disfrutamos los diferentes momentos de nuestro almuerzo, al final con la dificultad de quien tiene toda la sangre procesando la comida y en consecuencia medio somnolientos regresamos a nuestra actividades administrativas.

Moving on to the pleasures of taste, we went to eat Feijoada. Bolinho was the selected venue, being known as the best place in Sao Paulo for this treat, and on this occasion popular opinion was justified. We enjoyed the tradition, ate greedily, and savoured each element of our lunch, such that our post-prandial systems were engaged primarily in processing our lunch such that somnolence took over, while we dealt with routine administrative tasks.

Las calles de Sao Paulo, comprendemos claramente que nos estamos refiriendo sólo a las áreas que recorrimos, son muy atractivas. Siempre se encuentra alguna joya arquitectónica, algún detalle singular en el diseño de la calle, algún parque que atrae la atención. En muchos casos están arborizadas y resulta refrescante recorrerlas. En el corazón se encuentra el Parque Ibirapuera un lugar muy verde con senderos y diferentes espacios para el entretenimiento de todos, que sirve de escenario de fondo para algunos museos, el teatro y el centro de exhibiciones OCA.

The streets of Sao Paulo (understand that we are referring only to those we encountered) are attractive. We were always finding some architectural jewel, some distinctive element in design, or some park to attract our attention. In many cases the streets are tree-lined and hence refreshing to walk. In the heart of the city, Ibirapuera Park is green and pleasant, with walks and many options for diversion, and which is the location of various museums, a theatre, and the OCA exhibition centre.

El premio mayor de la visita a Sao Paulo corresponde a la Librería Cultura, un lugar para perder la conciencia. Son tres locales satélites de un local principal que cuenta con tres pisos de libros, música y video, en todos los géneros, un local específico de arte, otro de fotografía, otro de una editorial asociada con literatura brasilera y de escritores internacionales reconocidos y otra de libros de bolsillo. Dentro de local principal además de múltiples sitios para leer hay café y salas de cine. Pasamos dos ricas tarde allí, buscando, mirando, almorzando y por supuesto en cine. Muy seguramente no hubiéramos conocido este sitio, si el amable librero del centro de la ciudad no se hubiera empeñado en indagar y reservar para nosotros lo que estábamos buscando en su librería y el no tenía, pero sin duda estaba en la “Cultura”, siempre apreciando los beneficios de la bondad.

First prize in our visit goes to the Livraria Cultura, a place in which to lose oneself. With three "sub-stores" around the main store in Avenida Paulista, it has three floors of books, music, and videos of all types, a locale devoted to art, another to photography, another to one publisher of pocket books, an offering of books by Brazilian authors as well as those by well-known foreign authors. In the centre there are amply opportunities to read, eat, and also cinemas. We spent two afternoons enjoying this feast of books, food, and cinema. We would almost certainly not have known of the place had we not encountered a friendly bookshop in the centre, where the amiable owner helped us to find a book we we seeking, which he reserved for us, and which was available in the Livraria Cultura.

On the way to Sao Paulo / En la ruta a Sao Paulo

Salimos temprano concientes del reto que representaba llegar a Sao Paulo en la hora pico y como nuestro tiempo había sido corto en Paraná identificamos una ruta que nos conectaría con la BR116 pero nos permitiría visitar algunos poblados coloniales de influencia Portuguesa y atravesar la Serra do Mar.

We left early aware of the challenge of reaching Sao Paulo during rush hour and as our time was short identified a route that would connect to the main highway but would allow us to visit some colonial towns with Portuguese influence and cross the Serra do Mar.

El primer sitio visitado fue Morretes, un lugar bien preservado con ese trazado medio caótico de los poblados que no siguen un trazado de cuadrícula y que resultan encantadores para perderse; este sitio está evidentemente preparado para recibir las visitas turísticas en el día, con varios lugares para comer, muestra de dulces locales y una rivera del río que permite su observación tranquila; alrededor las montañas arborizados completan el paisaje.

The first site visited was Morretes, a well preserved village with the chaotic layout of these villages, which were not built on a grid and in which it is easy to get lost. This site is obviously set up to receive tourists during the day, with several places to eat, sample local sweets, and a riverbank allowing visitors to walk by the river and enjoy the mountain scenery.

Seguimos a Antonina, un puerto al otro lado de la Bahía, con construcciones pintorescas de diferentes momentos de la historia y un muelle que permite ver la belleza natural del lugar.

We continued to Antonina, a port across the bay, with picturesque buildings from different periods in history and a pier that brings out the natural beauty of the place.

De regreso tomamos el camino La graciosa, que atraviesa la Serra do Mal, varios kilómetros empedrados y una vegetación exuberante con arboles florecidos son suficientes para disfrutar el recorrido por una vía estrecha, pendiente y curva. Varios miradores están disponibles, pero la niebla y el crecimiento de la vegetación hacen difícil la observación. Casi en la cima encontramos el acceso al camino antiguo, y solo con fines exploratorios, nos metimos por allí para después de media hora salir por allá en otra ruta que no parecía ser la principal. Después de algunas preguntas estábamos de nuevo en la ruta para tomar la autopista entre Curitiba y Sao Paulo.

We then took the road “La Graciosa” which crosses the Serra do Mal; kilometers of cobbles and lush vegetation with flowering trees, an enjoyable drive on a winding ascent. Several viewpoints are available, but the fog and growth of vegetation made observation difficult. Almost at the top we found access to the old road, and for exploratory purposes took it, occupying half an hour in traveling the unused old road. Finding ourselves at a junction with a new road in construction we asked the way, and were soon back on the new road, to arrive at the main highway between Curitiba and Sao Paulo.

La autopista en la mayor parte del trayecto fue fluida y aunque por ella circulan muchos camiones no hubo retos muy grandes que sortear más allá de la lluvia y uno que otro afanado, sin embargo estuvimos en un trancón gigantesco en ambos sentidos por una hora y 15 minutos, moviéndonos muy lentamente por 14 Km. Allí fue muy fácil comprender el volumen de camiones y mulas que circulan entre las dos ciudades.

The highway was fluid most of the way albeit with many trucks, however we then found ourselves in a huge queue (in both senses) and spent an hour and a quarter to cover 14 Km, during which we realised the extent of truck traffic on this route.

Llegamos a Sao Paulo después de las 6:30 p.m. aún con luz y ansiosos por no perder la ruta hacia el hotel, fácilmente encontramos el camino y una copa de Malbec llegó a nuestras manos para iniciar otra exploración más placentera.

We arrived in Sao Paulo after 1830h, still with light, and anxious not to lose our way easily found the route to the hotel, where a glass of Malbec restored our spirits prior to our next, and more pleasurable, exploration.

The beauty of the Parana Coast, a place to return to / La belleza del litoral Paranaense aún por descubrir

Paranaguá es un lugar colonial y podríamos decir que es el epicentro del Litoral Paranaénse. Como en los días anteriores hoy también llovía y estábamos seguros que los paisajes observados serían más impactantes con otra luz, pero así llenos de lluvia tenían ese toque silencioso de la belleza.

Paranagua is a place with colonial history and could be described as the epicentre of the Parana Coast. As in the previous days we had heavy rain in the morning, and were sure that the scenery we saw would be more impressive in another light, however in the rain the beauty was more subdued.

En medio del camino dimos con Guaratuba y como en otras ocasiones, nos sorprendimos con al extensión de la población, un lugar lleno de gente yendo hacia la playa y de calles congestionadas.

On the way we passed through Guaratuba, and as frequently before were surprised by the size of the place, full of people heading for the beach, and congested streets.

Cuando finalmente llegamos al centro de la ciudad, descubrimos que la ruta implicaba un paso en ferry o Balsa a través de la Bahía del mismo nombre; así que en medio de la lluvia y en la embarcación más lenta de las disponibles, pasamos de un lado al otro, a través de un paisaje de verde y agua, mientras comíamos algo para almorzar. En el otro lado, el paisaje continuaba y los verdes de las montañas hacían contraste con las breves y refrescantes vistas del mar.

When finally we arrived in the centre of Guaratuba we found that the road incorporated a ferry crossing across the synonymous Bay: so in heavy rain, and on the slowest of ferries, we crossed to the other shore through verdant scenery, meanwhile eating something for lunch. On the far shore the road continued through green mountains with refreshing vistas of the sea.

Llegamos a Paranaguá , específicamente al centro histórico y iniciamos nuestro recorrido de las calles, sin mucha información, porque a diferencia de otros sitios, el turismo en la ciudad no es la prioridad. Entre un lugar u otro llegamos al Museo Etnográfico, en las instalaciones del Antiguo Colegio Jesuítico. La construcción está muy bien conservada, es posible apreciar la belleza de muchos detalles que la constituyen y su contenido complementa adecuadamente el valor de la edificación.

We arrived in Paranaguá, specifically in the historic centre, and began our tour of the streets, more difficult than usual since tourism is not a priority for the town. We discover the Ethnographic Museum, housed in the old Jesuit College. The building is well conserved, it is possible to appreciate many details of its construction, and its contents complement the building.

Luego recorrimos diferentes calles dispuestas caóticamente o con un orden no lineal, apreciamos las casas más antiguas y otras menos pero bien conservadas y visitamos el mercado popular para apreciar el café y un Bolinho do Camarao con mandioca delicioso. Es evidente en Paranaguá un esfuerzo por la recuperación de las casas del puerto, también es evidente el deterioro sufrido y los estragos que los cables hacen sobre el paisaje urbano.

Later we wandered through chaotic streets, appreciating various old buildings as well as other less well kept, and enjoying a coffee and Bolinho de Camarao in the Market. In the town one can see evidence of efforts to restore the houses at the port, however it is also possible to see significant deterioration, as well as the inevitable mess of cables in the urban landscape.

En la noche disfrutamos las delicias del Danubio Azul y sus camarones ensopados y lamentamos cada minuto de ruido acondicionado en el hotel elegido.

In the evening we enjoyed the Brazilian version of Shrimp Etouffee in the Blue Danube and then returned to the hotel to enjoy every minute of the noisy air conditioning.

Este es destino para regresar, no pudimos visitar el complejo de Islas de la zona, que protege un ecosistema de Mata Atlántica muy importante por su diversidad.

This is a place to which to return, we were unable to visit the islands in the area, which protect the important "Mata Atlantica" ecosystem.

(Finally the English version complete) Joinville: more history than is obvious / más historia de la aparente

La ruta a Joinville ha sido la más tranquila de este viaje, temíamos por el tráfico, pero salir en la mañana y tomar una autopista resultó mucho mejor de los esperado.

The road to Joinville was the most tranquil in Brazil so far, we had been concerned about traffic, however leaving in the morning and taking the highway was much better than expected.

En esta ciudad, orgullosa de sus colonos Alemanes, se respira un ambiente más tranquilo y eso trajo para nosotros muy buenas sorpresas.

In this city, proud of its german colonisation, one breathes a calmer air, and we came across some good surprises.

¿Sabe qué es un Sambaquí? Fue la pregunta con que nos recibieron en el Museo de Antropología de la ciudad. Luego de la obvia respuesta “No” un efluvio de información sorprendente llegó a nosotros para abrir todos nuestro sentidos. Aquí escribimos un poquito para ustedes:

Do you know what a Sambaqui is? This was the question with which we were welcomed to the city´s anthropological museum. After the obvious response (¨no¨) we received a surprising flow of information which we appreciated greatly. Here we write a little of what we learned for you:

Sambaquí es una vocablo Guarini para denominar cúmulos de conchas (montañas de conchas), estructuras construidas por el hombre como forma de habitación 5000 años A.c. Estas estructuras se encuentras en las costas de Brasil especialmente hacia el sur y fueron sitios de vida y muerte de una cultura Prehistórica en este territorio. En estos sitios vivían y eran enterradas las personas y en los procesos de investigación se han encontrado Sambaquis de hasta 600 metros de diámetro y 30 metros de altura.

El estudio de los restos óseos humanos y animales así como artefactos de piedra y hueso, han permitido establecer algunas características como las siguientes:

• Eran pescadores de aguas profundas más que recolectores o cazadores
• Tenían alto dimorfismo sexual
• No tenían caries y solo en 2 de 960 lugares encontraron restos dentales con caries y evidencia de consumo de carbohidratos.
• Evidencia de anemia
• Estimación de promedio de vida de 40 años
• Era enterrados en posición fetal y las prácticas de sepultura de niños y adultos era diferente.
• Se expresaron artísticamente a través de la talla de piedra y huesos.
• En la ciudad de Joinville hay 42 Sambaquis que son preservados como patrimonio arqueológico y son innumerables los sitios en Santa Catarina, Paraná y Río Grande do Sul.

Crear conciencia de este grupo representó un regalo absolutamente disfrutable y apreciar la información disponible en el museo una experiencia inolvidable.

In Guaraní sambaqui is a word to describe clusters of shells (shell mountains), man-made structures as a base for settlements 5000 BC ago. These structures are on the coast of Brazil especially in the south and were sites of the life and death of a prehistoric culture in this country. In these lived and were buried these people. During research into the sambaquis sites up to 600m in diameter and 30m high have been found.

The study of human and animal bones and stone artifacts has allowed the understanding of the following:

* They were deep sea fishermen and hunters rather than gatherers

* Had high sexual dimorphism

* They had no cavities and only 2 of 960 places found traces of dental caries and evidence of carbohydrate intake.

* Evidence of anemia

* Estimated life expectancy of 40 years

* They were buried in a foetal position and the burial practices of adults and children were different.

* Their art was expressed through stone and bone carving.

In the city of Joinville there are 42 sambaquis that are preserved and there are numerous archaeological sites in Santa Catarina, Paraná and Rio Grande do Sul.

Learning of this group was an enjoyable gift and the information available at the Museum made it a memorable experience.

Visitamos el museo de los inmigrantes, diseñado para mostrar las prácticas sociales y productivas de los colonizadores, pudimos apreciar maquinaria, reconocer los aspectos más importantes de la vida cotidiana de las familias y la colectividad y las características de construcción de las casas originales.

We visited the Museum of Immigration, designed to show the social and production practices of the colonists. We saw their machinery, important aspects of daily life of the families and the community, and the construction techniques of the original houses.

Viajamos a San Francisco do Sul, la tercer ciudad más antigua del Brasil. Si bien su Museo de Historia pretende contar el cuento con los objetos disponibles, sus calles y casas son una historia en si mismas. Las calles están empedradas, se conservan las fachadas de muchas casas, incluso de algunas que están en ruinas, el marcado popular esta en uso y el puerto esta listo para recibir lanchas de pescadores locales tanto como grandes cruceros que hacen allí una escala.

We then continued to San Francisco do Sul, the third oldest city in Brazil. While the museum seeks to tell its story with the objects available, its history is really told in its streets and buildings. The streets are cobbled, the facades of many buildings are conserved, including some more or less in ruins, the market is in use by local fishermen bringing fresh fish to sell as well as large cruiseships which stop here.

Cuando la lluvia torrencial comenzó, entramos al Museo Nacional del Mar y nos llevamos una grata sorpresa. No solo hacen una excelente reseña de la navegación a través de la historia y representan con modelos a escala diferentes embarcaciones, sino que cuentan con una colección grande y muy bien conservada de barcos tradicionales brasileros, dado que Brasil es el país con mayor diversidad de barcos tradicionales en el mundo. Caminamos y caminos en medio de la exhibición que siempre tuvo en cada sala un elemento de admiración.

When the torrential rain started, we entered the National Maritime Museum and were greatly surprised. Not only is there an excellent presentation of the history of navigation and various voyages, there is also a huge collection of Brazilian traditional boats, noting that Brazil has the widest range of boat styles in the world. We walked and walked through the halls, seemingly always finding yet another roomful of admiration.

De regreso en Joinville y aprovechando las raíces del lugar nos permitimos disfrutar algunas delicias gastronómicas germánicas y probar las cervezas locales .

Back in Joinville the historical roots of the place allowed us to enjoy German food and try local beers.

Este es un destino complaciente, quedaron cosas por ver y una buena escusa para regresar.

This is an accommodating destination, there remain things we would like to see, thus we have an excuse to return.
