It was 5 in the morning when we set out from our encampment to explore the inhospitable terrain. We set out with our local guides to the river Urubamba, to begin the ascent into the unknown heights.. After various challenges of gravity, spirit, and distance, a new discovery revealed itself: an animal species, of the human genus, occupying the entire landscape, and displaying three predominant characteristics: gregarious, noisy, and blind – “homo turista”

The herds urge themselves anxiously against the clock, to fulfil their checklist commitments, unconscious of the marvels of the surrounding landscape. As we approached the entrance, we could hear functionaries saying things like “ Nooo sir, the places were all taken at 0600h”, we checked our timepieces, it was 0605h.

Given the risks which the species demonstrated, we chose to direct ourselves in the opposite direction to the stampede (the “Integral Route”). We started out on the ascent of Mount Machu Picchu, the highest peak in the area. Within 5 minutes silence prevailed, only the sounds of birds and the breeze filled our ears. At every turn of the trail, a new vista opened up before us, enriching the scene.

Soon a new sound emerged from the depths of our knees, with a near-painful element. In spite of this we continued.

Two hours later we were on the summit, to our delight.

After an enjoyable (and well-deserved) rest, we began our descent, to increase our understanding of the herds.

Several specimens had chosen to follow our route and ascend the mountain. Our interactions with them were typified by their primary focus – how much longer would it take to reach the summit? Could they ascend and return to the entrance by midday (this time being established by the herd as the required time to return)? Several, in an act of rebellion, chose to continue. Others obediently turned around and returned to the herd. We elected to enjoy a delicious lunch.

In spite of the predominance of the species described, we encountered isolated examples of another species: like Don (or Donald), male, middle-aged, with a fine humour, who proved a fine companion in the initial stages of the day. We also saw Viscacha, very quiet on the rocks above the "Templo del Cóndor".

The herds leave for the valley around 1500h, and so after this hour it is possible to visit the remains of the citadel in peace. We were able to gain further insight and build our knowledge and insight. At the end of the day, hummingbirds and wine to celebrate.

Besos,
