An unusual Christmas / Una navidad inusual

Llegamos a Puerto Valle con la esperanza de pasar un buen rato y disfrutar el lugar, habíamos hallado este sitio el día anterior y solo contábamos con la información recibida por teléfono, pero desde el primer momento supimos que apreciaríamos nuestra estadía.

We arrived in Puerto Valle with the hope of a good break and enjoying the place, which we had discovered the previous day and on which our information was limited to what we had discovered over the phone; from the first moment of contact we thought that we would enjoy our stay.

Después de comprobar que no había señal de Internet, organizamos con Nicolás, nuestro anfitrión, las actividades a realizar en la tarde: caminaríamos por los senderos del lugar y visitaríamos el criadero Yacare Porá, en español caimán lindo. Una vez pasó la lluvia estábamos listos para nuestra visita, cinco pasos después, observábamos aves y caminábamos a 0,5 Km. por hora entre un pájaro y otro, luego de casi 1 hora, llegamos al criadero de Caimanes.

After finding that there we had no internet signal, we organised with Nicolas, our host, our plan for activities in the afternoon: walking the trails and visiting the "caiman ranch" Yacare Porá (beautiful caiman). Once the rain had passed we were ready for our walk and within 5 paces saw birds which reduced our pace between species to 0.5 Km/h, so that after an hour we arrived at the caimans.

En este lugar, además de conocer el proceso de cría y aprovechamiento de la piel del caimán, pudimos verlos en diferentes etapas de su crecimiento. La propuesta de este lugar, se basa en la recolección de los huevos para su cuidado e incubación y el posterior retorno al entorno del porcentaje que hubiera sobrevivido en condiciones normales o en porcentajes superiores en zonas donde la población se encuentra disminuida. Esto permite aprovechar el porcentaje de huevos que habitualmente se pierden por depredadores naturales o el hombre.

Here, in addition to learning how caimans are raised and how their skins is used, we saw them in various stages of growth. The "ranch" takes eggs and cares for them through hatching and growth of the caimans, to susbsequent release of a proportion to the wild, where populations are normal, or in higher proportions where the population is below normal. This reduces the loss of eggs (and caimans) to human depredation, as well as natural predators.

Ya en la noche, cenamos y disfrutamos la compañía del equipo del hotel , quienes amablemente nos dieron un regalo de navidad que no esperábamos y que resultó muy divertido destapar.

In the evening we dined and enjoyed the company of the friendly hotel team, who to our surprise gave us Christmas presents, which were most welcome.

Al día siguiente, navegamos el Río Paraná y algunos canales del mismo. No solo apreciamos la flora del lugar y la exhuberancia de la vegetación sino que pudimos ver otras aves y mucha libélulas.

The following day we navigated the Paraná river and its channels. Not only did we appreciate the flora and exuberance of the vegetation we also saw many birds and dragonflies.

En la tarde visitamos el Estero del Ibera en su porción norte. Fue hermosos ver yacarés en su habitad normal, garzas y Pirañas y el paisaje. Solo allí es posible comprender la importancia de este ecosistema y el valor que mismo en diversidad. Ya en la noche fue posible apreciar los insectos y su muy alta actividad.

In the afternoon we visited the Estero del Ibera (Ibera wetlands) in its northern part. It was wonderful to see caimans in the wild, herons, and piranhas, during our trip.

Otra expedición nos permitió ver en la noche una familia de carpinchos a la orilla del río, apreciar sus sonidos, movimientos y formas de cuidado nos provocó mucha felicidad, después nos dedicamos a ver danzar las luciérnagas en un concierto de estrellas.

Venturing out at sunset allowed us to see a family of capybara on the riverside, hearing their barking, appreciating their movement and form of looking after the family, which was very enjoyable. We then focussed on watching the fireflies dancing under the starlit skies.
