Llegamos al museo del Automovilismo Juan Manuel Fangio, después de una noche de preguntas y risas sobre la formula 1, las preguntas las hacia Alan y las risas salían de él cuando escuchaba mis respuestas, pero en la segunda ronda todas mis respuestas fueron correctas, así que pasado el examen era posible visitar este museo temático

If you are still reading it is because you know who Fangio was, so we are on the same lap (so to speak). We arrived at the Juan Manuel Fangio Museum, after an evening of questions and laughter on Formula 1, Alan asking the questions and the the laughter arising from Marce's answers, however in the second round her answers were all correct, and so having passed the exam it was possible to visit the museum.

Son en total 14 bandejas con automóviles de carreras y otros elementos asociados a las mismas , distribuidos en dos edificios y que presentan de alguna forma los diferentes contactos de este hombre con la disciplina en su historia personal. Revisamos motores, diseños, gomas, mecanismos de suspensión, formas de ventilación, formas de adaptación para hacer los vehículos más livianos, cambios en las normas, vimos bellezas y monstruos y alrededor de esto la historia de un hombre que quiso dejar un legado a la juventud … eso sí a su libre interpretación.

There are 14 "halls" with racing cars and items associated with racing, split between two buildings, and which present in various forms the life of the man and his links with racing. We looked at motors, designs, tyres, suspensions, types of ventilation, modifications to street cars, changes in the rules, and we saw the good, the bad, and the ugly in cars. This all being part of the history of the man, whose thoughts on his legacy were simply that his actions should serve as an example to youth.

Después de 5 horas de recorrido y solo un café, cuando al ver un motor en V de 12 cilindros puse cara se sorpresa y admiración, supe que había sufrido un daño mayor, que este asunto puede ser apasionante y que si no salía rápidamente de allí seguramente haríamos una inscripción en el club de fans de Fangio, este era un gran riesgo que no quería correr, así que seguimos nuestra ruta a Tandil, con una sonrisa de satisfacción y algunas curiosidades en mente: información sobre el gran premio de América del Sur, mas conocido como Buenos Aires – Caracas.

After five hours touring the museum and only one coffee, Marce's surprise and admiration at the V12 engine gave her the realisation that she was at grave risk of becoming an aficionado, and that if we did not leave quickly we would have to join the Fangio Fan Club. This being a risk we did not wish to take, we continued on our way to Tandil, with a smile of satisfaction, and curiosity to learn more on various themes, including the "Gran Premio de América del Sur", better known as the Buenos Aires - Caracas Race.

Mar CON Plata / an Argentine Brighton

Gente, gente y mas gente es lo que se ve en Mar del Plata, todo está lleno de porteños que aprovecharon un nuevo día festivo del país para disfrutar la Playa.

People, people and more people are what you find in Mar del Plata, which was full of "porteños" (citizens of Buenos Aires) taking advantage of a new annual holiday to enjoy the beach.

La ciudad surge a finales del siglo XIX y pronto se constituye en “el balneario más europeo de Sur América” frase que encontramos en un museo de la ciudad y que refleja muy bien el espíritu de pretensión que la habita hasta hoy el sitio.

The city grew in the last part of the 19th century and soon became "the most European resort in South America", a phrase which we came upon in the city museum, and which reflects very well the pretension which one finds in the city.

En 1913 inauguran una Rambla afrancesada y gigantesca en el borde de la costa para asegurar un ambiente apropiado para los selectos visitantes de la capital. En los cuarentas, 30 años después, se dan el lujo de demolerla para construir algo más contemporáneo, que se adaptara mejor a las expectativas del turismo social peronista del siglo XX, con esta experiencia seguro consolidan su imagen de derroche y pretensión. En este museo la historia de la ciudad se enriquece con la historia de la ropa y de los vestidos de baño.

In 1913 was inaugurated a huge French-style Esplanade on the beachfront to provide an appropriate environment for the select visitors from the capital. In the 1940s, only 30 years later, this was demolished to build something more contemporary, which would conform more closely to the principles of Peronist Social Tourism in the 20th century, which act consolidates the idea of expenditure in support of pretension. In this museum the history of the city is illustrated with displays of clothing and bathing suits.

En la ciudad nada es muy interesante, es posible encontrar de todo, con estándares de calidad medio y profundidad hasta las rodillas y así se tienen experiencias “medio” buenas. (Para ser positivos).

In the city nothing is very interesting, it's possible to find everything, however with mediocre standards of quality; a beach experience in half measures.

Contrario a nuestras expectativas, este año el Festival de Cine de Mar del Plata en su edición 25, se realizó del 13 al 21 de Noviembre, razón por la cuál pudimos asistir a una de las películas premiadas, después de verla descubrimos que había ganado el premio a mejor actriz, con justa razón, pero la película no nos pareció muy buena. Las dos películas más destacadas fueron: Essential Killing, de Jerzy Skolimowski y Silent Souls de Alexei Fedorchenco. No sabemos nada de ellas pero a algún lector le puede interesar.

We were surprised to find the 25th Cinema Festival of Mar del Plata, which ran this year from November 13th to 21st, giving us the opportunity to see one of the prize-winning films. After seeing it we found that it had won the prize for best actress, which was appropriate, however the film itself did not appear very good. The films which won most awards were "Essential Killing", by Jerzy Skolimowski, and "Silent Souls" by Alexei Fedorchenco. We know nothing of these however someone reading may be interested.

Bahía Blanca paso en blanco / a blank spot

Iniciamos nuestro viaje en la tarde con la intención de llegar a Bahía Blanca Antes del anochecer. Rápidamente notamos un cambio en el paisaje, más árboles, más ondulación, un cambio en la vegetación y más ganado vacuno.

We set off in the afternoon with the intention of arriving in Bahía Blanca before dark. We soon noticed a change in scenery, more trees, more undulation, a change in vegetation, and more cattle.

En el paisaje notamos concentraciones de vacas en corrales y paramos a observar. En este lugar hay 1500 cabezas en corrales de tierra y alimentadas con concentrado que es dispuesto por un tractor distribuidos, después de servidas, las vacas sacan su cabeza por entre las estacas y para acceder a los comederos. Después de ver esto es mas claro para nosotros que preferimos las vacas de potrero!

We saw herds of cattle corralled and stopped to have a look. In this one there were 1500 head, feeding from concentrate which was being distributed by tractor; after this passed by the cattle would put their heads through the stakes of the fence to gain access to the food. After seeing this it became clear to us that we prefer "free range" beef.

Cuando llegamos a Bahía Blanca había un concierto del cuarteto Lucio Passarelli, su desempeño muy bien, en de sus cantantes menos bien. Pero después de más de un mes sin escuchar música en vivo, fue refrescante.

When we arrived in Bahía Blanca we went to a concert by the Lucio Passarelli Quartet: the musicians were very good, the singers less so. However after more than a month without live music, the concert was refreshing.

Bahía Blanca ha sido la única ciudad de nuestro viaje que no nos ha permitido conocerla, sus horarios son Argentinísimos y es el primer lugar en donde un Café cierra al as 12:50, con esto no hay hada que hacer.

Bahía Blanca was the only city in our trip which did not let us get to know it: its hours are highly Argentine, and it is the only place where a café closed at 1250h, and so we ran out of options to understand the city.

El Valle del Rio Negro / the Rio Negro Valley

Salimos hacia Viedma, la última ciudad de la patagonia y que nos servía de escala en nuestra ruta a Mar del Plata. Después de 4 horas de viaje llegamos al punto del cruce hacia la reserva provincial Caleta de los Loros, donde de acuerdo con la información obtenida, se encontraban los loros barranqueros.

We left for Viedma, the last city in Patagonia, which served as a stop on the way to Mar del Plata. After 4 hours en route we reached the crossroads to Caleta los Loros (Parrot Spit) where, according to the advice we had received, we would find the Patagionan Conures (Cyanoliseus patagonus).

Tomamos una típica ruta en ripio hacia la caleta, en el camino varios espectáculos uno Maras: tres se cruzaron en nuestro camino muy rápidamente y con una locomoción que no corresponde con su apariencia.

We took a typical gravel road to the spit, seeing several Maras on the way, crossing the track in front of us with a gait quite unexpected for the form of the Mara

Dos la guardería de Choiques, muchos pequeños con solo un adulto, corren, corren y corren, teníamos miedo de que los más pequeños se perdieran del grupo así que ajustamos nuestra velocidad para evitar su dispersión. We also encountered a Choike (rhea) kindergarten, many little ones with only one adult, running, running, and running. We were afraid that the smallest would lose the group and so adjusted our speed to avoid this. The sight was wonderful, and so far we still don't know whether this is a single family group, or one adult looking after various offspring.

Tres pájaros, después de muchos días de ver más o menos los mismos pájaros aparecieron Lechuza de Vizcachera, Martinetas y Tijeretas, todos ricos de observar.

Three "new" birds, after many days seeing much of the same species we saw the Burrowing Owl, Martineta, and Fork-tailed Flycatcher, all enjoyable to see.

Finalmente llegamos a la Caleta, un silencio absoluto interrumpido por el susurro del viento dominaba el espacio, buscamos los loros (que no se distinguen por el silencio precisamente) y no había ninguno, el único loro era el del nombre. Disfrutamos el paisaje y regresamos, tomamos nuevamente la ruta hacia Bahía Blanca y allí estaban los loros, en las cuerdas de la luz al lado de la carretera, escribiendo una partitura compleja y listos para descansar. (No es justo manejamos 100km por ripio para verlos)

We finally arrived at the spit to discover an absolute silence, interrupted only by the wind. We looked for the parrots (which are not usually found to be silent) and found none, the sole parrot being that of the name of the spit. We enjoyed the scenerey and then returned to the highway, where we continued on our way to Bahia Blanca, and there were the parrots, on the roadside lights and power lines (writing a complex score on these) preparing for the night (it's not fair, we drove 100 Km on gravel track to see them).

En la desembocadura de Río Negro, están Viedma y Carmen de Patagones. La primera en la provincia de Rio Negro,Patagonia y la segunda en la de Buenos Aires. Nos quedamos en Carmen por sus referencias históricas. Si bien las dos ciudades fueron fundadas en la misma época, Viedma fue devastada en las inundaciones de 1899, conservando solo una manzana histórica. Las dos ciudades están conectadas por puentes y por pequeñas embarcaciones que garantizan el paso del río.

In the estuary of the Rio Negro lie Viedma and Carmen de Patagones. The first in the province of Rio Negro, Patagonia, and the second in Buenos Aires province. We stayed in Carmen based on comments on its history. While both were founded in the same period, Viedma was devastated by the floods of 1899, retaining only one original block. The two are connected by bridges and by small launches which shuttle across the river.

Carmen conserva algunas muestras de su arquitectura colonial y un museo histórico que permite conocer detalles del proceso colonizador. El museo tiene por política que todo visitante cuente con un guía para el recorrido y ha diferencia de muchos guías de museo este fue capaz de hacer de una colección de objetos la mejor excusa para una sesión de cuentos fascinantes, su capacidad de relato y posición crítica nos permitió acceder a relatos clarificadores de la historia del país.

Carmen retains a few elements of its colonial architecture and a history museum which provides information on the colonisation of the area. The museum's policy is that all visitors are accompanied by a guide; unlike many we have encountered our guide was capable of turning a collection of objects into a series of fascinating stories, his skill in relating these, coupled with a critical capability, gave us access to much clarification of the history.

En Viedma hay más infraestructura para el turismo, mejores restaurantes y algunos museos. Decidimos visitar el museo salesiano para conocer las pinturas murales y del techo del edificio, las cuales implicaron un gran trabajo de los artesanos, pero no despiertan ninguna pasión, tampoco los objetos del obispo anfitrión.

In Viedma there is more infrastructure for tourism, better restaurants, and several museums. We chose to visit the Salesian Museum to see the ceiling paintings and murals, which obviously required a lot of work, however these didn't inspire us, neither did the possessions of the bishop.

Cuando la ciudad se sumió en el sueño del medio día, pudimos irnos tranquilamente.

When the city relaxed into its afternoon slumber, we were able to leave satisfied.

Peninsula Valdés, la razón de Puerto Madryn / Raison d'etre for Puerto Madryn

Nuestra visita a Puerto Madryn, base de la exploración de península Valdés, estuvo precedida por una ruta larga y monótona, con más tráfico y calor del hasta ahora experimentado en la Patagonia. Nos desviamos un poco al oeste para visitar Gaiman y buscar torta negra galesa.

Our visit to Puerto Madryn, base for exploring the Valdes Peninsula, was preceded by a long and monotonous route, with more traffic and temperature than experienced so far in Patagonia. We detoured to the west a little to visit Gaiman and look for Welsh "black cake".

Gaiman es uno de esos poblados que resultaron de la colonización galesa de la Patagonia, construyendo un eje que atraviesa el país de este a oeste desde Puerto Madryn hasta Trevelin y Esquel. Algunas de sus casas muestran las formas de construcción del momento, las casas de té proliferan y la antigua estación del tren es hoy el museo de la ciudad. No encontramos la torta galesa favorita, pero si algunas alternativas.

Gaiman is one of the towns established in the Welsh colonisation of Patagonia, creating an axis across the country from east to west, from Puerto Madryn to Esquel and Trevelin. Some of the houses are built in the Welsh manner, Tea Houses proliferate, and the old railway station is now the town museum. We didn't find our favourite Welsh "black cake", however did acquire some alternatives.

Puerto Madryn, nos sorprendió en su tamaño y enfoque turístico, en nuestras mentes esperábamos un poblado pequeño, con infraestructura básica y con un ambiente más rústico de puerto, pero no fue así. Es una ciudad enfocada a atender al turista, con más de una tienda de recuerdos de la Patagonia o de implementos para outdoor por cuadra, amplia avenida costanera y varios hoteles disponibles, sin embargo es en esencia el punto de estadía para visitar el parque natural.

Puerto Madryn surprised us with its size and tourist focus, in our minds we we had expected a small port town with a more rustic feel, however this was not the case. A city focussed on tourism, with more than one store of Patagonian souvenirs and one of outdoor kit per block, a wide seafront drive, and various hotels, basically as a base from which to visit the Natural Park.

Pasamos un día en la Reserva Natural Península Valdés, el cual es insuficiente para recorrer todos los puntos de observación disponible, sin embargo pudimos en esencia hacer dos de las tres cosas que deseábamos y algo más: nuestros objetivos ver ballena franca austral, ver orcas y ver elefantes marinos.

We spent a day in the Nature Reserve of Valdes Peninsula, in which it is impossible to visit all of the lookout points available, however we did achieve two of our three goals plus more: our hope was to see Southern Right Whales, Orcas, and Southern Elephant Seals.

Pudimos ver las ballenas desde la playa, su suave salida a la superficie, sus juegos en el agua y la “colita”, excepto por algunas colas vistas o tocadas en la vida, estas colas nos produjeron más alegría y placer (Más a mi que a Alan). Al día siguiente en Puerto Madryn, en el golfo nuevo, con un día soleado y precioso repetimos la faena y pudimos verlas saltar… fantástico.

We could see whales from the beach, surfacing smoothly, playing games, and then diving, displaying their tails, which experience is most pleasant compared with all but a few tails seen or touched previously (more for Marce than Alan). The following lovely sunny day in Puerto Madryn, in the Golfo Nuevo, we saw more whales, this time witnessing their "jumping" out of the water.

En relación con los elefantes esta es la historia. Llegamos a Caleta Valdés y lo primero que observamos fue un mirador de Pingüinos Magallánicos, así que pingüineamos nuevamente y otra vez nos admirarnos con sus habilidades locomotoras. Luego nos dirigimos al mirador principal de elefantes marinos. Nos acercamos e inicialmente vimos muchos lobos, en su actitud normal de descanso y uno que otro movimiento. Esto leones muy seguramente eran “galeses” porque tenían colores un poco diferentes y seguro hacia mucho calor porque varios estaban en el agua. Caminamos el mirador y no observamos ningún elefante. Así que nos fuimos al otro lado intentando ver elefantes, nuevamente allí más lobos marinos descansando y nuestra búsqueda del gran elefante se estaba agotando, después de una hora sin éxito decidimos regresar con alguna desilusión, cuando vimos la caseta del guardaparque decidimos preguntar. Un hombre amable sale a atendernos e hicimos una pregunta general: ¿me podría explicar los hábitos de los Elefantes? Y a través de esta puerta llegamos a la conciencia de nuestra ignorancia. Todos los que habíamos observados eran Elefantes, solo que el magnífico hocico elongado solo lo tienen los machos y ellos ya hicieron su tarea y se fueron.

With respect to the elephants in the story, we arrived at Caleta Valdés and the first point we saw was a lookout over Magellanic Penguins, and so we penguined for a while and once again admired their locomotive capabilities. We then made our way to the principal lookout for Elephant Seals. We initially saw large numbers of sealions, in their normal attitude of relaxation with a few other movements. These sealions were obviously “Welsh” since their colouring was somewhat different, and they were obviously hot since many were in the water. We walked to one end of the trail from the lookout and saw not one Elephant Seal. So we headed in the other direction in search of Elephant Seals, once again with no luck. Our search for the Elephant Seal was proving fruitless, after an hour we decided to give up, disappointed. We then encountered the park warden’s office and decided to enquire. An amiable warden came out and we asked him to explain the habits of the Elephant Seals. Then we learned of our ignorance; all we had seen were Elephant Seals (!), the large proboscis we were expecting is only visible in the males, who leave after fulfilling their annual task.

Los elefantes marinos son los mamíferos con mayor dimorfismo sexual, los machos llegan a pesar hasta 4 toneladas y a medir hasta 6 metros de largo, mientras que las hembras llegan a 900 kg y máximo 3 metros.

Hence we here expound the principal discoveries:

The Elephant Seals are the mammals with the most sexual dimorphism, the males reaching 4 tons and up to 6 metres in length, while the females reach 900 Kg and a maximum of 3 metres.

Los elefantes llegan a esta zona a los partos y el nuevo apareamiento. Cuando nacen los elefantitos son de piel oscura y amamantan por 28 días, su cuerpo es como el de una foca madura, pero su cara es redonda como el de la foto, para eliminar la sal soplan fuertemente por su nariz y algunas veces sale también leche.

The Elephant Seals arrive in this area for the birth of their offspring and to mate. When the seals are born they have dark skin and suckle for 28 days, their bodies are similar to a mature common seal however their faces are round as in the photo. To expel salt they blow out through their noses and occasionally also expel milk.

Luego del destete, se inicia el apareamiento, los elefantes alfa llegan a la colonia y forman harenes de hasta 70 hembras, acompañados por elefantes machos periféricos listos para robar hembras o retar al Alfa. Cada elefante alfa tiene hasta 16 apareamientos por día.

Pasado el episodio del apareamiento, inicia el proceso de cambio de piel, tiempo en el cual no pueden entrar al agua y pierden hasta el 40% de su peso.

After weaning, mating starts, the alpha males arrive and establish harems of up to 70 females, accompanied by peripheral males ready to steal females or challenge the alpha male. Each seal mates up to 16 times a day.

After the mating period, there is a process of skin replacement, during which the seal cannot enter the water, and loses up to 40% of its weight.

Finalmente, las hembras vuelven al agua a comer y continuar con su embarazo de 11 meses.

Finally, the females return to the water and continue their pregnancy.

Después de la clase, un elefante macho aún inmaduro hizo su aparición y el famosos hocico elongado, se hizo presente.

After our class, a male Elephant Seal, still immature, made his appearance and the famous proboscis was now evident.

Las orcas no aparecieron pasaron por allí a las 3:30 de la tarde y muy posiblemente el regreso lo harían con la marea de la noche, así que nos quedamos con las ganas.

The orcas were not visible, they had passed by at 1530h and would probably return in the high tide at night, and so we would not be able to see them

Satisfechos y riéndonos de nosotros mismos pudimos regresar.

Satisfied and laughing at ourselves we returned to Puerto Madryn.

Comodoro siempre fue para Alan un destino de trabajo, muchos años visitando la zona, enfocado en asuntos de la industria principalmente y siempre mirando al horizonte queriendo comprender que había más allá. Para Marce un destino anunciado y posiblemente insípido, pero cargado de valor social e indispensable en la travesía.

Comodoro was always a work destination for Alan, many years visiting the area, focussed on the petroleum industry, and always wondering what was over the horizon. For Marce a long-announced destination, possibly insipid, but charged with social value and indispensable in the trip.

En la ciudad, exploramos las calles, los indicadores de la cultura y los museos, visitamos un museo regional con más información de la disponible en muchos lugares similares hacia el sur y el museo del petróleo, que como dijo el anfitrión correctamente, esta enfocado en mostrar la historia de YPF en la zona.

In the city we explored the streets, the cultural offering and the museums. We visited a regional museum with a lot more information than is available in many similar museums further south, and also the Petroleum Museum which, as the guide explained, is focussed on the history of YPF in the area.

Por fuera de la ciudad visitamos el Bosque Petrificado de Sarmiento, fue una experiencia abrumadora, la magnitud del área protegida y su paisaje son una buena referencia de los grandes movimientos y transformaciones que se han generado en el planeta, es posible imaginarlos y comprenderlos.

Outside the city we visited the Petrified Forest at Sarmiento, which was a bewitching experience, the extent of the protected area and the scenery providing a good opportunity to appreciate the huge shifts and transformations in the history of the planet.

En este escenario observar las estructuras petrificadas de 65 millones de años accesibles a tus sentidos, en perfecto estado y en perfecta representación de los árboles predecesores cuando tu cerebro no logra poner en

perspectiva el tiempo, resulta desconcertante. Este desconcierto se amplifica con la confusión sensorial, las imágenes que estás capturando corresponden a troncos de árboles caídos (madera, blando, húmedo o seco, con pequeños organismos, con un sonido particular de acuerdo con el grado de humedad, entre otros), pero cuando los tocas son piedras (frías, duras, menos accesibles, silenciosas al tacto, pesadas, entre otras) y el cerebro se confunde y ese estado es divertido, lo gozamos una y otra vez.

In this setting you can see structures petrified 65 million years ago in a perfect state of preservation, fooling the senses which assume that one is looking at trees recently fallen (wood soft, humid, with tiny organisms, which will sound ¨woody¨) however when you touch them they are stone (cold, dry, heavy, etc.). The brain is disconcerted by this anomaly. We enjoyed the experience greatly.
