Hacia Chivay / To Chivay

We left Arequipa and climbed into the puna again. Our departure from Arequipa was easy: simple to find and with relatively orderly traffic. As we ascended we gained views of the snow-capped peaks and volcanoes surrounding the city, and gradually attained the high country, where we found, for the first time, vicuñas.

Dejamos Arequipa y ascendimos a la puna otra vez. Nuestra salida de Arequipa fue fácil: fue facil encontrar la salida y el tráfico es relativamente ordenado. En la medida en que ascendimos, empezamos a ver picos nevados y volcanes alrededor de la ciudad, gradualmente llegamos a las alturas, en donde encontramos vicuñas por primera vez.

In the puna, where there are small lakes, there is a great variety of birds, including geese, ducks, moorhen, herons, gulls, and others, all endemic to the ecosystem. Here we see a heron local to this zone.

En la puna, donde hay lagunas, hay una gran variedad de aves, incluidos: gansos, patos, garzas, gallinetas, gaviotas y otras, todas en variedades endémicas de este escosistema. Aquí pueden ver una garza de esta zona.

As we began the descent from the puna to the valley of Colca, we found a viewpoint where there was a lady, with her llama, selling souvenirs. The lookout was a good point from which to see the span of the valley, and the lady was wearing the clothing of the Collagua culture.

Cuando iniciamos el descenso hacia el Valle del Colca, encontramos un mirador donde había una mujer con una llama bebe, vendiendo recuerdos. Este sitio ofrece una muy buena vista del valle entero y la mujer viste ropa de la cultura Collagua.

Having arrived in the valley, and chatted with the local police, who were friendly and informative, we established ourselves in the hotel, and then set out to see some of the valley. We spent some time in Yanque, where we were welcomed into the museum (apparently opened for us), and then visited an artisan centre, in which we saw how the local embroidery is created. The lady in the photo is an expert in Cabana embroidery, the other predominant culture in the valley. Her focus and precision was impressive. Everyone was friendly and helpful.

Una vez en el valle, nos encontramos con la policía local, un grupo de hombres amables e informativos, nos ubicamos en el hotel y salimos a ver algo del Valle. Visitamos Yanque, fuimos recibidos en el museo (aparentemente abierto para nosotros) y luego visitamos un centro de artesanías, en donde nosotros vimos como el bordado local es creado. La mujer de la foto es una experta en bordado Cabana, la otra cultura predominante del Valle. Su enfoque y precisión es impresionante.

Todas las personas son amigables y dispuestas a ayudar.

Finally we returned to the hotel, as the rich sunset fell.

On arriving at the hotel, we encountered an embroiderer. Because we had not found a Cabana piece which we liked, we asked him if he would prepare a small sample for us. The result wad surprising, Dante not only prepared a sample, he dedicated himself to the task of using the figures most representative of this form of embroidery to create a delightful piece.

Al llegar al hotel, encontramos un hombre bordador. Dado que no habíamos encontrado nada en bordado Cabana, le soliciamos preparar un pequeño bordado para nosotros. El resultado fue sorprendente, Dante no solo se dispuso a su confección, sino que se esmeró en utilizar las figuras más representativas de esta forma de bordar, para nuestro deleite.

Once again people filling our day with beauty.
