We set out for the lake, and boarded a boat which took us to the floating islands of the Uros. These people migrated to live on the lake to escape the invasions of Incas and Spaniards, initially living on papyrus boats, and more recently building floating islands based on totora roots and reeds. 
Comenzamos nuestra ruta en el lago, a bordo de una embarcación para ver las islas flotantes de los Uros. Esta población migro al lago escapando de la invasión de los incas y los españoles. Inicialmente vivieron en botes de totora y más recientemente (100 años aproximadamente) construyeron islas flotantes usando bloques de raíces y las ramas de la totora.
We visited one of the islands, and learned of the way of life of the people who continue to live in this way. The similarity between the reed boats of Titikaka and those of Chad, Egypt, and Morocco, is striking.
Visitamos una de las islas y aprendimos la forma de vida de sus pobladores. Las similaridades entre los botes de totora del Titikaka y los existentes en Chad, Egipto y Marruecos es sorprendente.
The residents of the islands live principally on fishing. Every week they go to market to sell fish and buy food and other needs. In the photo you can see what is bought for a week.
Los habitantes de las islas viven principalmente de la pesca, cada semana van al mercado para hacer trueque y obtener otros productos fundamentales para su alimentación. En la foto, lo obtenido para una semana.
Following our visit to the island, one of the Uros took us on a small boat into the Titikaka nature reserve, where we saw many different birds, including some beautiful but more elusive “siete colores”.

After a tranquil couple of hours enjoying this environment, we returned to shore, and on our way back to Puno centre, stopped at the Yavari, which is a boat originally brought to the lake in pieces from the UK (taking six years to cross the Atlantic, round Cape Horn, arrive in Arica, take the train to Tacna, and then be hauled by mule over the mountains to the lake). It was then assembled and put into service on Christmas Day 1870. After many years rusting, it was rescued and rebuilt, and is shown off by its proud crew, who plan to put it back into service running cruises on the lake.
Después de un para de horas tranquilas disfrutando este ambiente, volvimos a la orilla y en nuestro camino de regreso al centro de Puno, nos detuvimos en Yavarí. este es un barco que ingreso a la laguna en piezas desde el Reino Unido (Tomo seis años cruzar el Atlántico, el Cabo de Hornos, llegar a Arica, tomar el tren a Tacna y luego transportarlo a Lomo de mula por las montañas hasta el lago). Este fue ensamblado y puesto en servicio en la navidad de 1870. Después de muchos años como chatarra, fue rescatado y reconstruido y es el orgullo de su tripulación, que plantea volver a ponerlo en servicio, haciendo cruceros por el lago.
