Rumbo al Aconcagua (now with english as well)

La ruta desde Mendoza hacia la frontera ofrecía muchas atracciones: Ruta antigua con hermoso paisaje, Embalses, Ruinas Jesuíticas, Turismo minero y el Maravilloso Aconcagua así que la decisión fue hacer este tramo con calma y dormir en Penitentes antes de cruzar la frontera. Aquí hacemos un reporte de la jornada atracción por atracción por atracción.

The route from Mendoza to the border offers many attractions: the old road with beautiful scenery, reservoirs, Jesuit ruins, mining tourism, and the marvellous Acongagua, and so the plan was to take the route in a leisurely fashion and spend a night in Penitentes before crossing the border. So, here we offer a report attraction by attraction.

1. Ruta Antigua con hermoso Paisaje: imposible de recorrer, el día estaba nublado, llovía y la visibilidad máxima eran 10 metros, así que ruta abortada, iríamos por la nueva ruta hacia Uspallata.

1. Old road with beautiful scenery: impossible, the day was cloudy, rainy, and with visibility of 10m maximum, hence we aborted the route and went by the new road to Uspallata.

2. Embalses: realmente hermoso el cuerpo de agua, el acceso es posible desviándonos de la vía, el ecosistema al rededor es muy desértico y altamente intervenido. Hacer más de lo que hicimos agregaba poco valor.

2. Reservoirs: the body of water was really beautiful, accessible by leaving the highway, the surrounding ecosystem very dry, and altered. Doing anything more than we did would have been of little value.

3. Ruinas Jesuíticas: interesante la labor de recuperación de las bovedas, fue posible ver muros de las instalaciones de la mina. Información limitada y restauración de baja calidad. Un poquito desinflados.

3. Jesuit ruins: interesting to see the work to renovate the storerooms, it was possible to see the ruins of the mining installations. Information was limited and restoration of low quality. A little disappointed.

4. Turismo minero: encontramos el parque minero y el centro de información turística, después de 25 km por una vía destapada y de esperar 30 minutos por autorización militar para el paso. 15:30 p.m un hombre nos recibe y nos dice que no es posible hacer recorrido alguno porque el guía disponible está en tiempo de almuerzo y solo podría hacer algo a las 5:oo p.m. y sería demasiado tarde. (De acuerdo con diferentes fuentes de información, las personas hacen siesta, de las 13 a las 17 de la tarde, esto explica la tranquilidad de las ciudades y porqué los almacenes abren entre las 17 y 18 horas).

4.Mining tourism: we arrived at the mining site and the tourist information centre after 25 Km on unsurfaced road, and having to wait 30 minutes for permission from the army to pass. At 1530h we were received by a person who said that it was impossible to visit the site because the guide available was on his lunch break and would be available only after 1700h, and this would be too late for a tour ( various sources have advised us that people take siesta from 1300h until 1700h and so this accounts for the afternoon tranquillity in the cities, and why the stores open from 1700h to 1800h).

5. Aconcagua: tomamos la vía hacia la frontera para llegar al Parque Provincial Aconcagua y hacer un recorrido básico durante el fin de la tarde. Parqueamos el carro, nos bajamos entusiastas y encontramos el siguiente letrero en la puerta del centro de información: Parque cerrado por el volcamiento de un camión con una sustancia altamente corrosiva a 50 metros al occidente, transite con cuidado y gracias por su comprensión. Ups!!! solo lo pudimos ver de lejos. Fuimos al puente Inca y se acabó lo disponible para disfrutar.

5. Aconcagua: we took the road towards the border to arrive at the Aconcagua Provincial Park and take the "basic" hike at the end of the afternoon. We parked the car, got out enthusiastically, and encountered the following notice at the park entrance office: "Park closed owing to overturned truck with highly corrosive load 50m to the west, drive carefully and thank you for your understanding". Oops! we could see the mountain only from the distance. We went to the Inca Bridge, and it is no longer possible to pass the boundary to enjoy it.

Después de tanta frustración decidimos dejar Argentina. Tomamos la ruta hacia el túnel internacional y el control integrado de migración. Inicialmente una fila infinita de camiones para pagar el peaje, luego de 10 minutos uno de los camioneros nos indica que podemos pasar y no tenemos que hacer la fila ¡que buena noticia!. Luego del túnel, otra fila infinita de camiones, una sola ruta, otro tunel doble vía, nuevamente esperar. Saliendo del tunel, un vehículo sale por la derecha, específicamente por fuera de la vía y nos indica nuevamente que no tenemos que hacer la fila, que podemos seguir con "cuidadito". Por fin en la frontera, cinco ventanilla, sello allí y sello allá y finalmente la revisión del carro: ups! no declaramos la pimienta, así que la inevitable lección sobre la declaración, las sanciones correspondientes y el decomiso respectivo, después de una conversación ejemplar: por favor cambie esta declaración y la frase siguiente: Qué no vuelva a suceder! la respuesta esperada: claro que no! con las misma vehemencia.

After so much frustration we decided to leave Argentina. We took the road for the international tunnel and the integrated border crossing. First there was an infinite queue of trucks in line to pay the toll, after 10 minutes one of the truck drivers told us that we did not have to wait in the truck line and could go on: good news! Then the tunnel with another infinite queue of trucks, only one lane, then another tunnel with two lanes (one each way), waiting again. Leaving the tunnel, a vehicle appeared from our right, having taken a short cut "off-highway", and once again indicated that we didn't have to stay in line, we could advance "with caution". Finally the border, window #5, stamp here, stamp there, and finally inspection of the car. Oops! ...we hadn't declared the pepper, and so the inevitable lesson regarding the declaration, the relevant fines, and the confiscation of the pepper. After an exemplary conversation: "please write a new declaration", and the following phrase "Don't let it happen again!", the expected reply "Cetainly not!" with the same vehemance.

Curva aquí, curva allá y finalmente en Los Andes para pasar la noche... la cama estaba rica.

Curve here, curve there, and finally in Los Andes for the night... the bed was wonderful.
